In this paper, the author examines the importance of digital marketing in libraries across the United States. As patrons become more technologically savvy, libraries are tasked with expanding their presence to digital landscapes. One way to do so is to implement simple and effective digital campaigns. This step can ensure ensure libraries remain relevant and indispensable to the patrons they serve. Marketing, once thought to be an unnecessary expense for libraries, is fast becoming a necessity. Academic libraries in the United States are increasingly adopting liaison models in order to increase their impact across the campus community. Through the evolution of this model, librarians must negotiate the new landscape for providing information literacy instruction to diverse and specialized populations. In order to adapt to specific departmental needs, while maintaining learning outcomes within the ACRL Framework, liaisons must design a systems for assessing how best to ensure all needs are addressed. Peer mentoring establishes a community of practice that will guide strategic planning while maintaining continual reflection and revision of the information literacy program.

The six-week MOOC on Coursera, Making Sense of the News: News Literacy Lessons for Digital Citizens, was launched on January 9, 2017, jointly by the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong and the Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University. News literacy is a relative newcomer to media literacy education even though instruction on teaching students how to access, analyze, evaluate, and, in some cases, create news media messages has been part of media literacy research and practice for decades. One challenge for the news literacy instructor/lecture/trainer is to tailor lessons to different class settings. How Are Non-Numerical Prognostic Statements Interpreted And Are They Subject To Positive Bias?, Anne Moyer, Samantha Siess, Sumeet Bhinder

Objectives: Frank, clear, communication with family members of terminally-ill or incapacitated patients has important implications for well being, satisfaction with care, and sound decision making. However, numerical prognostic statements, particularly more negative ones, have been found to be interpreted in a positively-biased manner. Less precise non-numerical statements, preferred by physicians, and particularly statements using threatening terms (“dying” vs. “surviving”) may be even more subject to such biases. Methods: Participants (N = 200) read non-numerical prognostic statements framed in terms of dying or surviving and indicated their interpretation of likelihood of survival.
