The Impact Of Diet And Nutrition On Adolescent Depression: A Systematic Review, Rachel Samuelson May 2017

The Impact Of Diet And Nutrition On Adolescent Depression: A Systematic Review, Rachel Samuelson

Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers

Depression in adolescence is linked with a range of adverse outcomes and substantial risk for morbidity and mortality across the lifespan. Improvement in diet and nutrition may offer an inexpensive and acceptable alternative to standard depression treatment. However, to this date, alternative treatment has been widely overlooked, due to lack of evidence and knowledge. This is crucial, as understanding and promoting the role of diet and nutrition in mental health could significantly reduce the impact of depression in young people. This systematic review sets out to examine the current literature on diet, nutrition, and adolescent mental health, in particular, the …

Systematic Review: Social Work School Interventions For Food Accessibility Among Impoverished Children, Rebecca Christensen May 2016

Systematic Review: Social Work School Interventions For Food Accessibility Among Impoverished Children, Rebecca Christensen

Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers

Mothers and children from impoverished families discuss the continuous sacrifices related to food insecurity. Sacrifices like trade-offs can lead to attention of a family’s immediate needs like food but these often come with the cost or sacrifice of other long term needs such as a means of income. Working with children and their families in attending to the underlying causes for their food insecurity may not only help to alleviate their immediate but also their long term needs in maintaining a standard of living. This systematic literature review was designed to investigate the research question: What interventions are being taken …

“The Hunger Games” Media Representation Of The National School Lunch Program, Danielle Lee

Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) was designed to help ease the financial burden of eligible families and provide a hot and nutritious meal for students. This program offers assistance to families who otherwise may not be able to afford consistent nutritious meals for their children. There is a lack of research in the area of media representation of public welfare programs, including the National School Lunch Program. The purpose of this research was to examine how both national (The New York Times) and local (Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press) newspapers portrayed NSLP in the 1960’s, 1980’s, …

Exploring Diet Within Treatment Of Persons With Serious And Persistent Mental Illness, Farah Lee

Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers

Studies suggest that persons diagnosed with serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI) die prematurely compared to the rest of the general U.S. population. Previous research implies that this is due to disproportionate rates of chronic medical conditions prevalent in the SPMI population. Contributing factors to the mortality of those with SPMI include poor diet, lifestyle, and mental illness. This research aimed to discover how providers incorporate dietary practices into their work with persons diagnosed with SPMI. To further explore this topic this researcher analyzed data from qualitative semistructured, face-to-face interviews with licensed professionals, medical doctors, and certified practitioners (n = …

The current base of literature highlights the importance of physical health and it’s impact on an individual’s mental health and overall well-being. The research specifically examines how physical health is incorporated into assessment, diagnosis, and over the course of treatment in clinical social work practice. This study used qualitative research, which includes data collection, data analysis, and using grounded …

Living On A Food Pantry Diet, Kathryn M. Jackelen Apr 2013

Living On A Food Pantry Diet, Kathryn M. Jackelen

Master of Social Work Clinical Research Papers

In 2011, food insecurity affected one in six Americans. In order to achieve food security, many families turn to food pantries with options less healthy than traditional supermarkets. A survey with 32 multiple choice and short-answer questions was distributed at a food pantry in the Twin Cities area to measure food pantry usage and demographics. One hundred forty-six respondents participated in the survey. Seventy-five percent were female, with a mean age of 51, and almost half of the respondents reported having children. Just over half had someone in the home employed (either part- or full-time). Almost two-thirds of the respondents …
