Working Lands Agri-Environmental Policy Options And Issues For The Next U.S. Farm Bill, Thomas Dobbs

Economics Staff Paper Series

U.S. farm legislation is due to be updated in 2007, to become effective with the 2008 crop year. Major questions surround the role of environmental or conservation provisions in the new Federal farm bill. In this paper, I first present some background on the evolution of U.S. 'agri-environmental policies'-policies encompassing conservation of agriculture's natural resources and agriculture's impact on the environment. I follow that with a brief discussion of the concept of' multifunctionality' in agriculture, a concept that increasingly is driving discussions of agri-environmental policy options in Europe and the U.S. The subsequent section of the paper contains discussion of …

The Effect Of Early Vs Normal Calf Weaning On Feedlot Performance And Herd Management: A Northern Plains Case Study, Scott Fausti, Douglas Landblom, Patricia Johnson, Martin Beutler, Roger N. Gates, Robin R. Salverson, Hubert H. Patterson, Staeve I. Paisley

Economics Staff Paper Series

A two-year study of early vs. normal weaning of steer calves was conducted in the western Dakotas in 2003-04. Economic and statistical analysis of calf feedlot performance and carcass quality was conducted. The analysis concludes that early weaning improves feedlot production efficiency, and reduces per day and per pound feedlot production costs. However, early weaned steers are lighter at slaughter; therefore, early weaning lowers carcass revenue relative to normal weaning. The early weaning effect on the profitability of retaining calves through the feedlot stage was not statistically significant. However, statistical analysis indicates that early weaning does have a positive effect …

Shifts In Agricultural Land Valuation In South Dakota: From Market-Based To Income Based Criteria, Tonya Hansen, Richard Shane, Larry Janssen Jun 2006

Shifts In Agricultural Land Valuation In South Dakota: From Market-Based To Income Based Criteria, Tonya Hansen, Richard Shane, Larry Janssen

Economics Staff Paper Series

Agricultural land prices rise amidst increased demand from agricultural producers and individuals seeking land for recreational, speculative, or residential uses. Interest in changing South Dakota's method of valuing agricultural land from a market-based to an income-based approach surfaced and resurfaced in the late 1970s and 1990s, respectively. Using results from two studies, we describe differences in land market conditions between these time periods and summarize the state and county valuation shifts resulting from adopting an income valuation approach. Specifically, we report internal valuation shifts between crop and pasture landowners and external valuation shifts between agricultural landowners and nonagricultural property owners.

Public Price Reporting, Marketing Channel Selection And Price Discovery: The Perspective Of Cow/Calf Producers In The Dakotas, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Doug Landblom, Martin Beutler, Pat Johnson, Roger Gates, Hubert Patterson, R. Salverson

Economics Staff Paper Series

Cow/calf producers operating in the Dakotas were surveyed on their price discovery strategies, marketing channel preferences, and their perceptions of how regime change in the public price reporting system for fed cattle affected the beef industry in general and the cow/calf industry in particular. Survey results indicate cow/calf producers consider local institutions (auction barns etc.) to be more reliable for price discovery and marketing their feeder and stocker cattle than regional or national institutions (futures market etc.). Consistent with this view, producers perceive that the current public price reporting system is less reliable than local market sources when making individual …

Prairie Wetlands And Climate Change - Droughts And Ducks On The Prairies, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, W.Carter Johnson, David E. Naugle

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) contains 5-8 million small wetlands and is one of the most ecologically valuable freshwater resources of the Nation. These wetlands provide abundant ecosystem services, including groundwater recharge, water for agriculture, water purification, and recreation. The PPR is best known as the “duck factory” of North America. By some estimates, this region produces over 50% of the ducks in North America.

Authority Presence And The Effect On Prejudice, Nicole F. Hofman Jan 2006

Authority Presence And The Effect On Prejudice, Nicole F. Hofman

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The current study analyzed the relationship between an authority figure's presence and the prevalence of prejudice when sentencing criminals. Eighteen undergraduate students (5 men and 13 women) aged 18 to 21 years, volunteered to participate in the study. Each participant completed the Implicit Association Test (lAT) and completed four fictitious criminal sentences. Significant support was not found for the current hypothesis, although more participants showed prejudice when the authority figure was absent compared to when the individual was present.Women showed prejudicial behavior more often then men when the authority figure was absent. Participants had a tendency to sentence longer for …

Memory Suggestibility In Entry-Level Rotc Students, M.A. Johanson, B.M. Mahaffy Jan 2006

Memory Suggestibility In Entry-Level Rotc Students, M.A. Johanson, B.M. Mahaffy

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of the current study was to test the theory that asking leading questions shortly after watching a video clip concerned with military safety will alter the viewer's memory of the events. This study was specifically directed toward a military population and used a military video clip. College students (10 men and 5 women) enrolled in entry-level ROTC classes volunteered to participate. Half of the students participating received questionnaires with leading questions and half did not. Contrary to the predicted hypothesis, the difference found between the numbers of correct answers on the two different questionnaires was not statistically significant.

The Price Of Social Perception: Effects Of Positive And Negative Feedback In Public And Private Spheres, R.D. Dvorak Jan 2006

The Price Of Social Perception: Effects Of Positive And Negative Feedback In Public And Private Spheres, R.D. Dvorak

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study examined how feedback affects choice behavior in public and private spheres. Seventy-five undergraduate students (19 men,56 women) participated. Two conditions were presented on a concurrent schedule of MIXED VR30-FR1. Under Condition 1, 5 points were awarded after completing theVR30. Following the FRl, 0-4 points were subtracted and participants received negative feedback. Under Condition 2, 1pointwas awarded following completion of the VR30. Participants received an additional 1point and positive feedback following the FRl. The private group wore headphones; the public group had feedback broadcasted in public. The presupposition that feedback in public would cause more responding in the second …

Role Identity Formation Of Occupational Therapy Students, Denise A. Rotert Jan 2006

Role Identity Formation Of Occupational Therapy Students, Denise A. Rotert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is an examination of the professional socialization process of occupational therapy students from a role identity theoretical perspective. First-year students, second-year students, fieldwork students, and faculty at an occupational therapy educational program at a Midwestern institution volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected through focus group interviews and surveys. The focus of the study was to determine factors associated with occupational therapy students’ identity salience, commitment, and role-person merger. Interviews and surveys were used to determine what factors, over and above didactic education, influence the socialization of students into the profession of occupational therapy and what …
