Analysis Of U.S.-Canada Intra-Industry Trade, Bashir Qasmi, Scott Fausti, Moore Liuyi

Economics Staff Paper Series

Determinants of U.S.- Canada Intra-industry trade in industry groups: a) Food and live products, b) Manufacturing products, and c) Machinery and transportation products are investigated. The analysis uses the OECD data for 1997 U.S.-Canada bilateral trade flows combined with the U.S. industry characteristics data from the U.S. Economic Census. Levels of intra-industry trade, measured by the Grubel Lloyd Index, were regressed on a number of industry characteristics using OLS techniques. Empirical results show that selected measures of product differentiation, economies of scale, and oligopolistic behavior are important determinants of U.S.-Canada bilateral trade in the selected industries. There are however, differences …

Grain Production & Handling Trends In South Dakota And Their Implications, Bashir Qasmi, Clayton Wilhelm Oct 2002

Grain Production & Handling Trends In South Dakota And Their Implications, Bashir Qasmi, Clayton Wilhelm

Economics Staff Paper Series

Over the last three decades, producers in South Dakota have planted increasingly more acres under corn and soybeans and have moved away from producing oats and barley. The wheat production in the state has also increased during this period. The grain handling industry in South Dakota has also changed over time. The number of commercial elevators has significantly decreased during the past 30 years, and the operating capacities of the remaining ones are much larger. Genetically modified (GM) or transgenic corn and soybeans were introduced in 1996. Presently, South Dakota is leading the nation in adoption of transgenic corn and …

Mandatory Versus Voluntary Price Reporting: An Empirical Investigation Of The Market Transparency Controversy, Scott Fausti, R. Keimig, Matthew Diersen, Han Kim Aug 2002

Mandatory Versus Voluntary Price Reporting: An Empirical Investigation Of The Market Transparency Controversy, Scott Fausti, R. Keimig, Matthew Diersen, Han Kim

Economics Staff Paper Series

The ability of the former voluntary price reporting system to generate market transparency in U.S. livestock markets was called into question by producer groups and academic research prior to the new federal system of mandatory price reporting being implemented. The market transparency issue is investigated by comparing price data collected from the former AMS voluntary price reporting system to mandatory price reporting data for live slaughter steers collected by the State of South Dakota before the advent of the new federal system. The relationship between a set of public price report series and the South Dakota mandatory price series is …

Agricultural, Resource And Ecological Economics With A ‘Multifunctionality’ Perspective, Thomas Dobbs Jul 2002

Agricultural, Resource And Ecological Economics With A ‘Multifunctionality’ Perspective, Thomas Dobbs

Economics Staff Paper Series

It would seem that agriculture in industrialized countries is experiencing 'the best of times' and 'the worst of times'. Productivity per unit of land and, consequently, aggregate food and fiber output have climbed dramatically since World War II. Food is generally 'cheap' relative to average per capita incomes. However, the costs of this abundance are becoming increasingly apparent. Drinking water supplies are becoming contaminated, bird and fish populations have declined, plant and animal biodiversity has been lost, and soil organic matter has declined. Also, agriculture appears increasingly vulnerable to human and animal health scares. Witness the recent outbreaks in Europe …

Economic Evaluation Of Cropshare And Cash Lease Contracts In South Dakota And Nebraska, Larry Janssen, John Cole, Xuan Xu, Bruce Johnson

Economics Staff Paper Series

Factors influencing choice of share or cash rental leases for cropland are examined using a 1996 dataset containing 1071 lease contracts in Nebraska and in South Dakota. Logistic regression results indicate tenant's age, capital position, and relationship with landlord were more important than leased land use or crop management variables.

Gleaning Information From Mandatory Livestock Price Reporting, Matthew Diersen Jun 2002

Gleaning Information From Mandatory Livestock Price Reporting, Matthew Diersen

Economics Staff Paper Series

Mandatory livestock price reporting has changed how prices are reported and used by analysts and market participants. Reporting has affected the availability of many reports and has added new reports and information. The new information often needs to be put into a meaningful form for direct use by analysts and participants. A brief overview of the evolution and implementation of mandatory price reporting is given. The new price reports are then discussed and compared to voluntary reports. Special attention is given to new reports that give insights into the short-and medium-run cattle supply situation. As South Dakota had State-level reporting …

Profitability Determinants In South Dakota's Beef Cow/Calf Enterprise, Amy N. Singrey Jan 2002

Profitability Determinants In South Dakota's Beef Cow/Calf Enterprise, Amy N. Singrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota beef cow/calf producers who had completed a 2000 Standardized Performance Analysis were surveyed and interviewed to gain a better understanding of what personal characteristics and management factors may help determine profitability. Low, medium and high profitability categories were defined by calculating one standard deviation above or below a mean ROA. Producers were unaware of their profitability category at the time of the interview. Statistically significant differences were found in reference to the involvement of the operator in physical labor and management functions, and in the percentage of other family members involved in the management functions in the enterprise. …
