The objective of this theoretical study was to examine how the decrease of play in early childhood education is affecting the developmental process of the child. Noted implications for the lack of play in schools included a decrease in creative thinking and imagination in childhood, an increase in ADHD and depression in children, an increase in preschool expulsions, an increase in special education services, and disparities in access to play for children of color and children living in poverty. This theoretical thesis explores how art-making can be used as a clinical tool in social worker’s psychodynamic treatment of complex post-traumatic stress disorder. A theoretical thesis was chosen in order to address the gap in the social work literature discussing the integration of creative action into trauma-informed care. D.W. Winnicott’s object relations theory and Trauma-informed art therapy theory are the two theoretical lenses applied and discussed. Social cognitive theorist Albert Bandura defined resilience as the ability to organize thoughts and actions to manage prospective and unknown situations. He called it the theory of perceived self-efficacy (Bandura, 2010). The tool used to measure this construct is called the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), which assesses a broad stable sense of an individual's personal competence to efficiently deal with a variety of stressful situations. The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of the use-of-self in clinical practice through a historical lens, in order to clarify what is meant by the term, to illuminate the evolution of the concept, and to attempt to reconcile the perspectives of several theoretical approaches. Seven theoretical approaches were examined, they are presented in five sections. The first section examines the Classical Psychoanalytic Theory of Sigmund Freud. The second section examines expansions on and departures from the classical position and includes contributions made by Carl Jung and Carl Rogers. This theoretical study explores the phenomenon of the therapist's personhood during consultation in relation to her professional demeanor, role, and responsibilities. This study examines the idea and treatment of this personhood through psychodynamic and relational perspectives. By comparing and contrasting the different models of the therapist via these two theories, the study is grounded in the history and evolution of ideas about the therapist, and elucidates how these ideas have changed over time. This study sought to answer the question "What is the long-term impact on the identity formation of adults who grew up with a disabled sibling?" The bulk of literature exploring the impact of a sibling's disability on his/her non-disabled sibling focuses primarily on children. With so few studies asking non-disabled adult siblings about their experience, however, the research examining this unique relationship lacks depth and scope.
