Online Pump Supplies’ Water Usage Survey, Jamie Knop Dec 2014

Online Pump Supplies’ Water Usage Survey, Jamie Knop

Jamie Knop

1.1bn people across the world don’t have access to safe water and 2.7bn people find water scarce each year. Although water is a renewable resource, it’s still finite, and less than 3% of the total planet’s water is actually fresh water. More than half of the world’s wetlands have dried up and rivers, lakes, and aquifers are depleting or polluted. With climate change drastically affecting every country on the planet, the situation is only going to get worse, especially as the population increases.

This paper reports findings from my investigation of the effect of civil asset forfeiture on the state of California. I investigated the effect that civil asset forfeiture has on different cities in the State of California. The intention of this study was to build on Baicker and Jacobson’s research by looking at the overall effects of the cities’ budget to determine if civil forfeiture (and equitable sharing) leads to an increase in the amount of total funds for the city. My hypothesis is that the amount of money seized in an earlier year predicts the total budget of the subsequent …

U.S. Migration Of A Family Member: Impacts On The Activities Of Adolescent Boys And Girls Left Behind In Mexico, Elizabeth T. Powers, Qing Wang Dec 2014

U.S. Migration Of A Family Member: Impacts On The Activities Of Adolescent Boys And Girls Left Behind In Mexico, Elizabeth T. Powers, Qing Wang

Elizabeth T Powers

We use the Mexican Family Life Study to estimate the effect of a household member’s migration to the U.S. on the time use of family members left behind in Mexico. We show that the effects of migration on adolescents vary with both the migrant’s former household role and with the sex of the left-behind adolescent. Adolescent boys spend less time in paid and agricultural work when males migrate from the household to the U.S., while their mothers correspondingly increase their time in market work and reduce their housework time. We find no significant effects of U.S. migration on adolescent girls’ …

The Economics Of Implementing Population Health Strategies, Glen P. Mays

Glen Mays

Successful strategies to scale up and spread complex community-level interventions require an understanding of the resources required for implementation, how best to distribute them among supporting institutions, and how resource consumption and distribution varies across settings. This session reviews methods and early findings from the RWJF’s Public Health Delivery and Cost Studies (DACS) Initiative, which includes 12 inter-related studies examining the causes and consequences of variation in the costs of delivering complex community-level prevention strategies across more than 300 community settings in 12 states. Findings from these studies highlight the value of studying the economics of implementation, the measurement and …

The Role Of Social Groups In Radicalisation, Kira J. Harris, Eyal Gringart, Deirdre Drake Dec 2014

The Role Of Social Groups In Radicalisation, Kira J. Harris, Eyal Gringart, Deirdre Drake

Kira J Harris

The inability to form psychological profiles of individual members across a variety of extremist groups, as well as the recognition in extremism and terrorism research indicates that no adequate personality profile exists. This requires an analysis of other factors that influence the radicalisation process. By drawing on social identity theory, this paper offers a psycho-social explanation for how people define themselves in relation to their social group, as well as how the intra-group relationships can lead to extreme behaviour and resistance to counter efforts. These groups promote a salient social identity that becomes intrinsic to the self to the extent …

International Migration And Development: Myths And Facts, Piyasiri Wickramasekara Dec 2014

International Migration And Development: Myths And Facts, Piyasiri Wickramasekara

PIYASIRI WICKRAMASEKARA

International migration has emerged as a priority issue on the global agenda in the two decades, especially in the context of its positive role for economic development. There is however, still considerable controversy and stereotyping on migration and migrants. Politicians, anti-immigration lobbyists and the media in Western countries propagate a number of unfounded myths about migration. It is claimed that there is massive migration from the South to the North in recent times. Increasing migration under irregular situations is believed to result in security threats demanding stringent border controls at destinations. Another longstanding myth is that migrants steal jobs from …

Hiring Domestic Help And Family Well-Being In Hong Kong: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis, Adam Ka-Lok Cheung Dec 2014

Hiring Domestic Help And Family Well-Being In Hong Kong: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis, Adam Ka-Lok Cheung

Adam Ka-Lok Cheung

Outsourcing household tasks has become an important strategy for couples to avert the conflict between work and family roles. There is an increasing trend of domestic outsourcing, including the use of hired domestic help, in post-industrial societies. Despite the increasing popularity of outsourcing domestic tasks, the possible impact of hiring domestic help on family relations remains an important hole in our knowledge. Contributions of hiring domestic help to the employers’ family, such as averting marital conflict and improving marital quality, are often assumed in the literature but are rarely examined with empirical data, especially in a non-western context.

How The Usage Of It Is Effecting Academic Libraries, Mohammed J. Sarwar Dec 2014

How The Usage Of It Is Effecting Academic Libraries, Mohammed J. Sarwar

Mohammed J Sarwar

The purpose of this treatise is to determine how information technology is affecting the usage of services in the academic library. Various studies suggest that there has been a decline in usage of traditional face-to-face reference services. The majority of the college students prefer to use the Web instead of frequenting the library. Librarians and educators are concerned that these students are developing poor research skills if they only use the internet for research. Many of them are not familiar with the best electronic resources. Librarians may have less reference work but they will need to offer instruction on using …

An Empirical Evaluation Of The Connecticut Death Penalty System Since 1973: Are There Unlawful Racial, Gender, And Geographic Disparities?, John J. Donohue Dec 2014

An Empirical Evaluation Of The Connecticut Death Penalty System Since 1973: Are There Unlawful Racial, Gender, And Geographic Disparities?, John J. Donohue

John Donohue

This article analyzes the 205 death-eligible murders leading to homicide convictions in Connecticut from 1973–2007 to determine if discriminatory and arbitrary factors influenced capital outcomes. A regression analysis controlling for an array of legitimate factors relevant to the crime, defendant, and victim provides overwhelming evidence that minority defendants who kill white victims are capitally charged at substantially higher rates than minority defendants who kill minorities, that geography influences both capital charging and sentencing decisions (with the location of a crime in Waterbury being the single most potent influence on which death-eligible cases will lead to a sentence of death), and …

Enrique Wulff
