Disclosure Of Child Sexual Abuse: The Case Of Pacific Islanders, Hong Xiao
Disclosure Of Child Sexual Abuse: The Case Of Pacific Islanders, Hong Xiao
Hong Xiao
A number of factors influence the disclosure of child sexual abuse by survivors. While the influence of race and ethnicity on disclosure patterns is getting more attention, little has been written on abused children of Pacific Islanders, due in part to both lack of relevant data and a relatively small Pacific Islander population in the United States. Drawing on interviews with Pacific Islander women who were sexually abused in childhood and who delayed revealing their victimization, we explore the reasons for delayed disclosure. Findings suggest that cultural norms and family dynamics affect disclosure decisions. Concerns for the family and self-blame …

Knowledge Gaps On Water Issues And Consumption Habits In At-Risk Chinese Cities, Hong Xiao
Hong Xiao
This research explores awareness of water issues and beverage consumption habits of students at four universities in northern China, the region most at risk for water shortages. While water is treated as a common property resource in China, there are significant demographic differences in attitudes towards state responsibility for water quality and supply, with older respondents, urban residents, and women showing more faith in the government. Surveys of 671 university students reveal a disjuncture between their awareness of shortages and pollution issues at the national level, and awareness of local conditions. A second disjuncture is apparent in respondents’ views of …

China's Meritocractic Examination And The Ideal Of Virtuous Talents, Hong Xiao, Chenyang Li

Emphasis on both moral character and talent in selecting government officials has been an intrinsic part of China’s meritocratic tradition. From early on, mainstream Chinese political philosophy, particularly of the Confucian heritage, has promoted such an ideal. This quest, however, has also encountered perennial challenges in practice. In this chapter, we examine in historic context the ideal and the practice of integrating moral character with talent in selecting government officials. We will show that, despite difficulties, searching for virtuous talents in China today has evolved into the most comprehensive and most sophisticated form in history. The first section of this …

Responding To Spousal Violence: Does Gender Matter?, Hong Xiao, Jeanne Blackburn

Research on domestic violence has documented a persistent gender difference in partner violence; men are more likely than women to be violent and male aggression is viewed more negatively than female aggression. Yet few studies have explained why this is the case. In this paper, we explore the sources of this gender difference in the perceptions of partner aggression. Using a vignette describing a violent episode between a heterosexual couple, we assess the mediating effect of perceived level of danger on spousal aggression. Findings suggest there are significant differences in perceptions based on gender of perpetrators and gender of respondents. …

Class, Gender, And Parental Values In The 1990s, Hong Xiao
Class, Gender, And Parental Values In The 1990s, Hong Xiao

Previous research documents a persistent relationship between social class and parental values. Middle-class parents are more likely to emphasize autonomy, and working-class parents are more likely to stress conformity in children. More recent literature, however, suggests a gender difference in the effects of class on values. Feminist scholarship also claims a gender gap in fundamental value orientations. Drawing data from the U.S. sample in the World Values Survey, this research examines the intersections of class and gender as they influence parental values in the 1990s. The findings suggest that while social class continues to be a source of the valuation …
