This research is a meta-analysis of studies on Crew Resource Management (CRM)/Incident Command System implementation in the fire and emergency services. After a thorough literature review, four sets of results were analyzed to determine if CRM training was effective. An aggregate total of 283 test scores were evaluated. The data indicated that CRM training was effective in all studies analyzed. Fixed and random effects models indicated significance as well. The studies had a high degree of heterogeneity probably due to different training and testing procedures used. The data support the use of CRM training in the fire and emergency services. …

This study found that – based on certain configurations of communities and cost considerations – it is economically viable to consolidate public safety answering points (PSAPs) in Highland Heights, Lyndhurst, Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village and Richmond Heights, Ohio. When comparing 2012 staffing and noncapital costs to estimated staffing and noncapital costs for a consolidated PSAP, the consolidated PSAP would provide an estimated collective reduction in staffing and noncapital costs of ranging from $775,400 to $1.19 million. This project will examine the use of arson in homicide cases in Australia since 1990. It will involve a partnership between ACART and the Australian Institute of Criminology’s National Homicide Monitoring Program in order to examine the link between crime scene indicators, firesetter characteristics and the Multi- rajectory Theory of Adult Firesetting treatment program. The project has relevance to treatment providers, investigators and researchers by linking all three in a comprehensive assessment of arson associated fires and the offenders who perpetrate them. The study conducted by the Center for Public Management (PM) found that, for two of three scenarios analyzed, it is legally, technologically, and financially feasible to consolidate public safety answering points (PSAPs) in South Euclid, Beachwood, Euclid, Shaker Heights, and University Heights, Ohio. Of the scenarios found feasible, the study estimates a decrease in costs ranging from almost $687,700 to $1.1 million, depending upon the configuration of the PSAP. When factoring in capital costs, the savings ranges from $555,000 to $898,000, but lead to an increase in costs of $189,000 in a PSAP dispatching for police only. At the local …

This paper considers the issues of research 'relevance' and 'use' to reflect upon a cultural geography research project on bushfire that did not begin with any specific aim of being useful to policy makers but which has garnered considerable and ongoing interest from a broad audience. It provides an example of how the integration of quantitative and qualitative research methods and data can enhance research into cultural aspects of natural hazards whilst simultaneously playing a key role in ensuring that the research results are of interest to a wide range of groups. A flood exceeding the 100 year average recurrence interval in November 2005 led to the failure of an upland peat bog in Waterfall Gully. The area is prone to severe bushfire and flood events and the control dam at the base of First Falls was filled with sediment sourced from Wilson Bog. A resistant quartzite bar at Fourth Falls has formed a natural constriction point against which burnt logs and debris have collected following previous fire events forming a natural dam resulting in sediment/peat accumulation upstream. Land managers are required to assess a range of environmental attributes prior to and after prescribed burning. Current environmental assessments vary depending on the organisation involved and the existing information about localised soil erosion. Auditing successful environmental assessments requires ongoing field monitoring to evaluate whether the magnitude and extent of predicted post-fire impacts are comparable. The impacts of post-fire erosion were assessed by the authors using the techniques of water sampling, sediment traps, erosion pins, laser scanning, photogrammetry and visual field assessment.
