What happens when government web pages are hidden, moved, or deleted? In the age of “alternative facts” and the “politicization of science” one librarian was inspired by real world events to create an opportunity to dialogue about power dynamics and bias in a traditional one-shot instruction session. Environmental Science students critically analyzed the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website and its treatment of climate change during the Trump, Obama, and Bush presidencies. Information, energy, and materials are flowing over greater distances than in the past, changing the structure and feedbacks within and across coupled human and natural systems worldwide. The telecoupling framework was recently developed to understand the feedbacks and multidirectional flows characterizing social and environmental interactions between distant systems. We extend the application of the telecoupling framework to illustrate how flows in beef affect and are affected by social-ecological processes occurring between distant systems in Africa, and how those dynamics will likely change over the next few decades because of climate-induced shifts in a major bovine disease, trypanosomosis. For years it was possible to assume that climate change would create problems only for future generations. No longer. Societies around the world now face the effects of climate change on a daily basis. Millions of people from developing countries flee every year from slowly unfolding climate related crises like drought and famine. This article examines how social infrastructure can provide one framework for societies seeking to undertake radical transformation during the Anthropocene Era.
