Reflexivity In External Religious Leaders' Summit Communication Sequences (2005-2012) To G8 Political Leaders, Sherrie Steiner

Sherrie M Steiner

Using reflexivity as primary governance indicator, this case study examines the external communication sequences of the only multifaith summits whose purpose is communication to, and dialogue with, G8 and G20 political leaders about global responsibilities to empirically discern, independent of religious leaders' self-identification, whether the quality of dialogue is indicative of governance behavior or unreflexive acts of international value struggle. Findings indicate that religious leaders use cultural capital to blur (not reify) social boundaries that inhibit international collaboration, and offer no evidence of unreflexive dialogue. These particular leaders use social capital to socially reconstruct boundaries for cosmopolitan responsibility to include …

Faith-Based Accountability Mechanism Typology: The 2011 Interfaith Summit As Soft Power In Global Governance, Sherrie Steiner

Sherrie M Steiner

The conditions associated with the stability of democratic global governance have been a leading concern of political sociology. Globalization, a situation of ‘governance without government,’ has accountability gaps that International Non-Governmental Organizations—religious and secular—bridge with activism. They strengthen democratic norms by exercising soft power as accountability mechanisms in international relations. Religious and secular accountability mechanisms differ in both structure and function. This paper presents a Faith-Based Accountability Mechanism typology that outlines a set of attributes for an exercise of religious soft power that might strengthen the democratic process in global governance. A coalition service model that preserves the public trust …

Religious Soft Power As Accountability Mechanism For Power In World Politics, Sherrie Steiner Nov 2011

Religious Soft Power As Accountability Mechanism For Power In World Politics, Sherrie Steiner

Sherrie M Steiner

This case study of the Interfaith Leaders’ Summit(s) from 2005-2010 expands the concept of ‘soft power’ as an accountability mechanism to include religious soft power. The Interfaith Leaders exercise public reputational and peer accountability in relation to the G8/G20 leaders. The value of the dialogue process is not contingent upon political leader responsiveness. The significance of the religious accountability mechanism is ascertained by using a complex theoretical standard for assessing the legitimacy of global governance institutions against which observations are then gauged. The InterFaith Dialogue Mechanism shows increasing compliance with the complex standard between 2005 and 2010. The ongoing value …

The Political And Social Activities Of Mainline Protestant Clergy In The Election Of 2000:, Corwin |Smidt, Sue Crawford, Laura Olson, Melissa Deckman, Donald Gray, Dan Hofrenning, Sherrie Steiner, Beau Weston

Sherrie M Steiner

This study examines clergy across six mainline Protestant denominations in terms of their social characteristics, their theological positions, and their political attitudes and behavior. The analysis is based on data collected through random surveys of clergy in each denomination conducted in 2001 using the same instrument. The predominant focus of the article is on the nature and level of political activities exhibited by mainline Protestant clergy in the election year of 2000. The analysis revealed that mainline Protestant clergy are indeed relatively active politically, but that, despite their commonality of belonging to the same broad religious tradition, the nature and …

Transitional Adaptation: A Neoweberian Theory Of Ecologically-Based Social Change, Sherrie Steiner

Sherrie M Steiner

This theory presents an explanation for why the transition to sustainability posits distinctive challenges to social change toward sustainability. Civilization collapse is most vulnerable during the transition process toward sustainability due to increasing environmental fluctuations from environmental degradation. Collaborative relations between civic volunteers and governing bodies is considered as an important factor for adapting to these increasing fluctuations.
