Some novice researchers that are learning the Scientific Descriptive Phenomenological method of research could use a succinct aid to guide their learning. I composed Table 1. below so that beginners might see the connections between the Husserlian Phenomenological concepts and the 5-step* method developed by Amedeo P. Giorgi (1985; 2009). The learning aid might also be a way that beginners can “check their work” to make sure that they have done the analysis based on the phenomenological concepts and their definitions.

The book reviewed, Phenomenology: An Introduction, was written by Käufer
and Chemero to provide readers with a historical trajectory of what they
regard as “a loosely grouped philosophical tradition” (p. 1). The trajectory
they set out to present begins with Kant’s critique of the emerging scientific psychology
of Wundt to lay the foundations for their presentation of Husserl and
others. They close in the final chapter with an expose on how contemporary
cognitive science has drawn some ideas and concepts from phenomenological
thought to inform their empirical research projects (Käufer & Chemero, 2015).

The purpose of this article was to explore police officerʼs experiences during police vehicle pursuits. Interviews of three US police officers were conducted and the descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used to analyze their naive accounts of their lived-experiences. A police officer is sometimes required to literally make a potentially life or death decision and act upon it under rapidly evolving and dynamic circumstances involving a variety of mental, physical, and emotional aspects of the deadly force experience. Because the act of using deadly force is so personally impacting, the descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used in this study to provide a qualitative, holistic and personal viewpoint from the officers’ perspective in their lived-experiences. This paper is the methodology section of my doctoral dissertation that outlines the Descriptive Phenomenological Psychological Method of research as it has been taught to me by Amedeo P. Giorgi. Giorgi (2009) based his method on Husserl’s descriptive phenomenological philosophy as an alternative epistemology for human science research. This method section references Giorgi’s work and the phenomenological tradition of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and others. Each step of Giorgi’s (2009) modified Husserlian method is described and explained in the context of doing psychological research on the lived-experience of the participants in my dissertation research.
