European Integration And International Relations Theory, Engin Erdem Dec 2006

European Integration And International Relations Theory, Engin Erdem

ENGIN I ERDEM Dr.

One of the most significant developments in the twenty-century world politics has been the foundation of European Community (EC), and its evolution into the European Union (EU). Now, the EU is a supranational entity that is composed of twenty-five member states while it will be twenty-seven with the membership of Bulgaria and Romania in January 2007. The EU poses great challenges for both the policy and academic world. On one hand, the EU has become a powerful international actor in the current international politics. On the other hand, the academic world needs to explain the genesis and development of European …

An Overview Of The Ghana Police Service, Emmanuel Aning

Emmanuel Kwesi Aning

This paper is divided into five sections (chapters). First, it starts with a general historical overview of the force in terms of its origins and development. Second, is an outline of the structural development, growth and expansion of the service from its inception in the colonial period until 2001. Since the Police Service is one of the regulating arms of government, it would be useful and appropriate to review the legislative, constitutional and other legal instruments regulating the service. In an earlier paragraph, it was posited that while different governments seeking to examine the service and correct any problems and …

La Imagen Del Imperio: Los Estudios Sobre Wari En La Arqueología Peruana, Patricia Chirinos Ogata

Patricia Chirinos Ogata

In Peru and in the rest of the world, a great part of the information that helps us to understand the past comes from the story of archaeological practice itself. This article presents some thoughts about how the story of archaeological research in Peru has defined the concept that we have now about Wari and the Middle Horizon, and the impact of this phenomenon in the academic, social, political and cultural spheres.

Palestinian Refugees: Dethroning The Nation At The Crowing Of The 'Statelet', Randa Farah Dec 2005

Palestinian Refugees: Dethroning The Nation At The Crowing Of The 'Statelet', Randa Farah

Randa R Farah Dr.

The Oslo agreements proposed a two-state solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict: a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza existing alongside Israel. However, the refugees’ right of return and claims to land and property expropriated by Israel during the 1948 were removed from the equation, although they represent the core issues in the conflict. Based on the territorial divisions that preceded the 1967 war, or the ‘green line’, the agreements implicitly rendered the 1948 war and its consequences for the majority of the Palestinian population a non-negotiable historical reality. In a manner of speaking, the crowning of the ‘state’ …

Assessing The Role Of The African Union In Preventing And Combating Terrorism In Africa, Martin Ewi, Emmanuel Aning Dec 2005

Assessing The Role Of The African Union In Preventing And Combating Terrorism In Africa, Martin Ewi, Emmanuel Aning

Emmanuel Kwesi Aning

The period after 9/11 can be characterised as the terrorism moment in world history. Every actor in international relations—the state, regional, continental and international as well as civil society organisations—has been mobilised to combat what, apparently has been conceived as a common security threat to humanity. The transformation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) into the African Union (AU) was a divine coincidence at a time when multilateralism and international cooperation were being challenged by the threat of terrorism. In the post-9/11 period, the main concern of the Union has been to reinforce and implement existing counter-terrorism instruments adopted …

African Sustainable Leadership Development: A Culturally Intelligent Leadership Model For Service Oriented Leaders And Organizations, Marco Tavanti

Marco Tavanti

As a new generation of African leaders is emerging, so is the need to create appropriate and effective leadership paradigms for personal and organizational development. Servant leadership and cultural intelligence are essential pillars for identifying, developing and sustaining value-based leadership practices. Drawing from the Service Leadership model that emerged from the Depaul Leadership Project (DLP); this article outlines the competencies, orientations, methods and strategies for establishing effective and culturally intelligent sustainable leadership development programs. The Depaul leadership development model proposes that a collaborative, value-centered, and service-oriented perspective be at the center of an effective and sustainable African leadership development program. …

The Thrill Of Being Here: A Letter From Fortin De Las Flores, Mexico, John D. Hazlett Dec 2005

The Thrill Of Being Here: A Letter From Fortin De Las Flores, Mexico, John D. Hazlett

John D Hazlett

"The Thrill of Being Here" is an epistolary meditative essay on the desire for, and difficulties of, penetration, considered as a goal of travel, intercultural communication, and understanding of the other. Writing from a small town situated in the uplands of Veracruz, Mexico, Hazlett considers the possibility that a series of acupuncture sessions might serve as a fine metaphor for his year living and working abroad.

Review Of Hispanic Spaces, Latino Places: Community And Cultural Diversity In Contemporary America, Ed. Daniel D. Arreola, Clara Irazabal

Clara Irazabal

A welcome addition to the understudied field of Latino cultures and their linkages to place, this book transcends the common approaches to the study of demographic, racial, political, and cultural changes brought about by the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S., to focus instead on Latinos' "different geographies, and social adjustments to diverse places" (p. 1). Contributors were selected from presenters at the 2002 Association of American Geographers meeting in Los Angeles, but most of the authors are not Latino or female.

Building An Agricultural Research For Development System In Africa., Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng, Adiel Mbabu Dec 2005

Building An Agricultural Research For Development System In Africa., Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng, Adiel Mbabu

Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng

This paper discusses how impact-oriented agricultural research for development systems in Africa can be better organized and managed. Specifically, the paper puts forth the argument that achieving the development targets set by African leaders and the international community, for example, through the Millennium Development Goals, will be extremely difficult without a satisfactory re-orientation of the organization and management of African research for development systems. Such a re-orientation involves carefully linking the agricultural research agenda with national development priorities; improving coordination, interaction, interlinkages, partnerships, and networks among system agents—that is, agricultural research institutes, extension systems, higher education institutions, farmer organizations, civil …
