This paper describes a study of news media functions in the policymaking process. The study relates policy stages to mass media functions, a list of which is developed through a content analysis of news items about education. Propositions are then developed about the effect of mass media functions on policy decisions.

A Ritual For Attempting Leave-Taking In Colombia, Kristine Fitch

This article presents a conversational enactment of a leave-taking ritual, an archetype for Colombian spoken life, for the purpose of conversational analysis. This conversational enactment is drawn from audiotaped, naturally-occurring conversation recorded in Colombia in 1987. The purpose of analyzing this conversation is both to describe a conversational sequence which performs a symbolic activity among Colombians during leave-taking from social gatherings, and to elucidate what ethnographic information may (and may not) emerge from conversation analysis. Proposes that the question that communication theories seek to answer is what kinds of resources and knowledge must be drawn upon for communication to take place.
