Virtual Community For Fat People In Outdoor Recreation, Amber C. Stephens

This paper examines online virtual communities for fat people within outdoor recreation, and how they provide connection, complex agency, and representation for fat bodies in spaces where their bodies are seen as taboo. Furthermore, it will explore the way fat bodies have been historically viewed, the lack of representation of fat bodies in the outdoors and related communities, and the gate-keeping that occurs to those who do not conform to traditional stereotypes of an outdoorsy person. Significant evidence links combat exposure to psychiatric disorders and poor mental health outcomes in service members, creating the need to elucidate the factors associated with promoting psychological health and resilience in the military. Social identity theory postulates that an individual’s identification with a group, such as the military, can be instrumental in the provision of a sense of belongingness that is crucial for social integration, meaning and support during times of difficulty. The purpose of this systematic scoping review was to find what the current literature includes regarding the topic of Trauma-informed Care (TIC) as a service approach to serve youth who are experiencing houselessness. The review was guided by the research question, ‘How might Trauma-informed Care be practiced within houseless youth organizations?’ A comprehensive search of the databases PsycINFO and Academic Search Premier, as well as the grey literature database, Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) were performed to locate articles and readings relevant to the topic.
