Cut From The Same Cloth: The Us Textile And Apparel Industry And Post-Disaster Designs For Haiti, Ransford Edwards Jr.
Cut From The Same Cloth: The Us Textile And Apparel Industry And Post-Disaster Designs For Haiti, Ransford Edwards Jr.
Humanities and Politics Faculty Articles
In the aftermath of the 2010 Haitian earthquake, various neoliberal strategies have been advanced to help in short-term disaster mitigation and reconstruction, as well as more long-term improvements in the country’s overall economic integration and growth. One such strategy has been focused on revitalizing the country’s apparel assembly industries through an aggressive expansion of export processing zones (EPZs). The disaster, it appears, represented an important opportunity to improve economic conditions by reorganizing the country’s role in the global apparel commodity chain. However, this reorganization conflicts with the preferences of US textile and apparel producers who have used trade preference programs …

Characteristics Associated With Group Sex Participation Among Men And Women In The Club Drug Scene, Mance E. Buttram, Steven P. Kurtz
CAHSS Faculty Articles
This study examined the demographics, substance use and sexual risk behaviours associated with group sex (GS) participation among a sample of club drug users (n = 498) in Miami. Men (n = 128; 46.3%) and women (n = 75; 33.7%) reported histories of GS. Group sex participation among men and women was associated with heroin and injection drug use, trading or selling sex, and sex while high, compared with no GS participation. Moreover, among men, GS was associated with buying sex and sex with an injection drug user; among women, GS was associated with substance dependence, a history of sexually …

Creating an Institutional Repository from scratch creates a multitude of both opportunities and pitfalls in establishment of workflow, content creation, outreach and marketing policies, and stakeholder support. Nova Southeastern University’s Digital Commons based repository, NSUWorks, completed its first year in February 2015. During this session, the triumphs and tribulations of the first year will be discussed, along with future plans in order to give attendees a glimpse into one particular IR experience. Archival collection digitization, outreach/marketing, journal/book publishing, reporting tools, and collection development will also be covered.
The Social Environmental Elements Of Resilience Among Vulnerable African American/Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Mance E. Buttram
The Social Environmental Elements Of Resilience Among Vulnerable African American/Black Men Who Have Sex With Men, Mance E. Buttram
CAHSS Faculty Articles
Resilience theory has been suggested as a strong framework for research on HIV prevention among men who have sex with men (MSM). Among this population, literature indicates that African American/Black MSM are particularly vulnerable to health and social disparities associated with HIV transmission risk. Conceptualizing resilience as a part of one’s social environment, this qualitative study investigates the specific elements of resilience, and the associated contexts and relationships, among a sample of 21 substance-using African American/Black MSM. Data indicate that (1) elements contributing to resilience are multiple and co-occurring, including inner strengths, social relationships, diversity of experience, religion/spirituality, altruism, and …

Determining the origins of those buried within undocumented cemeteries is of incredible importance to historical archaeologists and, in many cases, the nearby communities. In the case of Avondale Burial Place, a cemetery in Bibb County, Georgia, in use from 1820 to 1950, all written documentation of those interred within it has been lost. Osteological and archaeological evidence alone could not describe, with confidence, the ancestral origins of the 101 individuals buried there. In the present study, we used ancient DNA extraction methods in well-preserved skeletal fragments from 20 individuals buried in Avondale Burial Place to investigate the origins of the …

Trauma Sequelae In The Forensic Female Population: Working With Numbing Behaviors, Tara S. Jungersen, Shannon Karl, Joseph Franco
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
Women in the forensic system have extensive trauma histories that present as harmful behaviors, both during confinement and post-release. Incarcerated women who have experienced sexual and intimate partner violence engage in a variety of numbing behaviors, including substance use, child neglect, self-injurious behavior, and sexual acting-out. This session will review the limitations of in-house trauma work, and help counselors tailor strategies to mitigate numbing with forensic populations
