Working with large data sets can be a challenge for both librarians and external stakeholders. Vendors often provide scads of data about the products we use, but sifting through it takes time. Visualization tools exist to help distill meaning from particularly dense data. This talk provides a look at how data visualization approaches can differ based on a variety of organizational factors such as staffing capacity, costs, and specific project requirements. One of the practical challenges presented by ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education is how to use it to design and assess instruction. By its nature, the framework is less prescriptive and more descriptive; it is more focused on understandings, habits, and general behaviors than on specific skills and practices, which makes it harder to pin down for purposes of instructional design. Nicholson Library’s teaching focus follows a strong introductory model, being well integrated in the first-year seminar classes and introductions to the major, though not necessarily across the upper division classes. How much difference does a year make? This presentation continued the discussion about acquisitions policies and workflows in a next-generation ILS that began at the 2013 Charleston Conference. The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 37 public and private academic institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In January 2013, the Alliance began a 2-year process of migrating all 37 institutions to a shared ILS in order to realize efficiencies and increase collaboration within the consortium. Migrating in 4 cohorts every 6 months, the last cohort of 10 institutions will go live with Ex Libris’s Alma and Primo in January …

Building partnerships with community-oriented research centers and departments is one of the best ways to develop an institutional repository into a valued community resource. This presentation examines partnerships with the Linfield Center for the Northwest (LCN) and the Department of Theatre and Communication Arts to demonstrate how Linfield’s institutional repository supports faculty research, student internships, multimedia exhibits, oral histories, and original theatrical productions.

How can librarians gain authentic knowledge about how students apply the skills and concepts we teach? In order to address this question, Susan Barnes Whyte and Jean Caspers share the knowledge they have gained by teaching two writing intensive courses: Information Gathering, a required 4-credit course for Mass Communication majors, and Information Ethics: the Individual as Creator and Consumer, a required 4-credit first year inquiry seminar course. Inspired by Chelle Batchelor's "Training Technologies A-Zed" presentation from the 2010 NWILL conference, Kathleen Spring was determined to update the out-of-date operations manual for Linfield College's interlibrary loan (ILL) department while simultaneously morphing it into a more user-friendly training tool and moving it to a web-based system.
