The purpose of this survey was to determine if graduates believed that the counseling services they received at Belleville Area College contributed to their academic success . A survey was conducted utilizing 181 graduates (111 females and 70 males) from a May 1996 graduate class of 696 students . Academic success is defined as the completion of a degree . Reasons for seeking counseling were broken into two time frames consisting of new students and students who were nearing completion of their degree. Mother-Bereaved Women And Death Anxiety, Nicole Depriest Thompson

Death anxiety in mother-bereaved women versus women non mother-bereaved was investigated. Female graduate students and social service employees were taken from a non-random sample in the Midwest. There were 60 participants, 30 who were mother-bereaved and 30 who were non mother-bereaved. Participants were given the Templer Death Anxiety Scale and a demographic survey to complete. Dependent variables were the scores on the Templer Death Anxiety Scale. There was not a statistically significant difference in average death anxiety scores between mother-bereaved women and non mother-bereaved women. The ramifications of the results are discussed, and potential avenues for further research are suggested.

A Comparison Of Self-Esteem Scores For Adolescents Who Have Not Been Pregnant, Have Been Pregnant And Have A Child, Bridget Laffleur

The differences in the average self-esteem scores between adolescents who have not been pregnant, adolescents who are pregnant, and adolescents who have a child was the focus of this study. The subjects were adolescents ranging in age from 12 to 19 who were living in a residential treatment facility. The participants were administered the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory. The results found that self-esteem and pregnancy status were weakly correlated but was unable to find a significance due to the low number of subjects .

This study examined the effectiveness of aromatherapy in promoting a positive affect, or emotion, by reducing situational or state anger in an academic setting. Seventeen graduate level counseling students in a Research Methods and Statistics class participated in the study one time per week over a period of four weeks. Subjects completed the state anger portion of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXJ) during each of the four weeks. Forty clients and forty therapists, both male and female, from varying economic and educational backgrounds completed a one- page self-report attitudinal survey regarding the place of religion and spirituality in their life and therapeutic sessions. The relationship between children's self-esteem and family environment was examined. In addition, self-esteem scores were compared to family type (intact vs. non-intact) . Male and female students were obtained from a non-random sample in the Midwest. There were 51 participants, 36 were girls and 14 were boys. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference at the alpha level .05 in the means of the Anger-ln. Anger-Out, and Anger Control scales scores of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory reported by extraverted and introverted participants. Thirty-nine undergraduate students enrolled in a community living course from a small, private, midwestern college served as participants in the present study. Perceptions Of Touch In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of Clients Recovering From Substance Abuse And/Or Childhood Sexual Abuse, Deborah Harmann Harris

Differences in perception of touch in psychotherapy were studied among clients with childhood sexual abuse and/or substance abuse issues. Forty clients from the general context of the "recovery community" were recruited to fill out an eleven item Revised Touch in Therapy Survey. Participants also gave narrative responses to a single open-ended question asking what meaning their touch experience held for them. The researcher adapted this current instrument from the longer, 1995 Touch in Therapy self-report questionnaire developed by Horton, Clance, Sterk-Elifson and Emshoff. Advances in research on attitudes towards older adults can productively be applied to the problem of professional ageism. In this study a group of 50 mental health professionals ranging in age from 19-65 with 21 being male and 29 being female responded to a questionnaire entitled Aging Opinion Survey. This survey requested the subjects' opinions concerning three topics: stereotypic decrement, personal anxiety towards aging, and social value of the elderly. A Study Of The Relationship Between Optimism, Pessimism, And Depression, Brian E. Elledge

The relationship between optimism, pessimism , and depression was investigated . Graduate counseling students (N=44) currently enrolled in school were recruited by a sample of convenience to participate in the study . The subjects were administered three questionnaires measuring optimism, pessimism, and depression, as well as a data sheet to help describe the sample. Correlational analyses only showed significant relationships between gender and optimism, and between race and depression. No significant relationships were found between optimism and depression, or pessimism and depression . The implications for these findings are discussed.
