Justice Not Long Delayed: Historical Perspective And The Twenty-First Century Fight For Gay Rights, Charles O. Boyd
Justice Not Long Delayed: Historical Perspective And The Twenty-First Century Fight For Gay Rights, Charles O. Boyd
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper attempts to formulate the best comprehensive strategy for achieving equal rights under the law for gays and lesbians. One of the main ways this paper attempts to formulate such a strategy is by looking at the tactics that allowed previous movements, such as abolitionism and the Civil Rights Movement, to succeed. This paper considers which of the tactics of these movements should be adopted by gay rights activists. Some tactics, such as civil disobedience, are determined to be useful for gay rights activists. Others, such as violence (which was avoided by the Civil Rights Movement but used by …
"Till Death Us Do Part: The Evolution Of Monogamy, Kirsten Glaeser
"Till Death Us Do Part: The Evolution Of Monogamy, Kirsten Glaeser
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
With statistics indicating that one out of every two marriages in the United States ends in a divorce, the validity of monogamous marriages has come under fire. Are humans truly capable of maintaining monogamous marriages or are they constraining their sexuality by doing so? The research entails two different perspectives while analyzing human monogamy; monogamy as a mating pattern and monogamy as a marriage pattern. The reason being that monogamy is solely not an evolved phenomenon but also a socialized one throughout most cultures. While analyzing monogamy as a mating pattern, several occurrences throughout our evolution allowed humans the ability …
The Immersive Medium: Art, Flow, And Video Games, Christopher M. Yalen
The Immersive Medium: Art, Flow, And Video Games, Christopher M. Yalen
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this article, the question of whether or not video games could be considered art is explored, as well as what this means for video games as cultural products. Using an interdisciplinary approach, I suggest that there are some games we can consider “art”, and that these games are not only different aesthetically speaking, but are also different from a media-effects standpoint. The article consists of three main sections, an aesthetic review, a content analysis, and a pilot study. In the aesthetic review, I employ different perspectives from aesthetic philosophy in order to come up with criteria for what an …
Threatening The Fabric Of Our Society: Divorce In Modern Societies, Kirsten Glaeser
Threatening The Fabric Of Our Society: Divorce In Modern Societies, Kirsten Glaeser
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
With fifty percent of marriages ending in a divorce, it is a prevalent occurrence within modern day society. Divorce has become a reality for some families, allowing society to readjust and reconstruct the family paradigm. Despite the negativity that once plagued a recently divorced familie, divorce has become such a common situation within society that the effects are no longer as drastic as they once were; society has learned how to interact with and incorporate divorced families. Society itself is also not as affected by a divorce because it contributes to a couple’s definition of commitment. With the increase of …
Perfect Timing: The Rise Of Women’S Political Leadership During Cultural Shifts, Christie E. Pearce
Perfect Timing: The Rise Of Women’S Political Leadership During Cultural Shifts, Christie E. Pearce
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
America has fallen behind in women's leadership, especially in politics. In the approaching era, there will be more viable female political candidates than ever in the past, but will the public be prepared to elect a woman to high office? Studies suggest that mentalities toward female leadership have taken a shift in a positive direction. The idea of what an 'ideal' politician must offer is more feminine in the modern era than ever before. In the age of social media, female politicians have opportunities to reach more constituents through social media in a more effective way than has been offered …

Nationalism And The Pressures Of War In 1812, Christie E. Pearce
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
One of the least understood wars in America's history-- the War of 1812-- gets a bad reputation for being a conflict without a victor. This paper strives to examine how the causes and actions of the war influenced the nationalistic culture of the US and eventually led to regional hegemony.
Male Hypergamy And Social Status, Cedric N. Floyd
Male Hypergamy And Social Status, Cedric N. Floyd
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
Male hypergamy, a social pattern rarely observed, has been prevalent throughout history as a symbol of social status for men. Hypergamy is the act of marrying into a higher social class or caste. This paper analyzes a few exemplary men ranging from the Italian Renaissance to Twenty-First Century America to make note of this pattern and attempts to understand how it affects the social order in middle-to-upper class society. The research, gathered from various books on class and society, presents an idea of various men who have, in some way or another, used their marriages as a social asset and …
