Folklore has been a part of American culture for as long as humans have inhabited North America, and increasingly formed an intrinsic part of American culture as diverse peoples from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania arrived. A review of Marty Crump's book on the folklore surrounding reptiles and amphibians. Crump's book is a collection of tales and myths both ancient and contemporary, and a fascinating analysis of how humans perceive and sometimes revere snakes, frogs and other "loathsome" creatures.
