Sexual Orientation, Work Values, Pay, And Preference For Public And Nonprofit Employment: Evidence From Canadian Postsecondary Students, Gregory B. Lewis, Eddy Ng Dec 2013

Sexual Orientation, Work Values, Pay, And Preference For Public And Nonprofit Employment: Evidence From Canadian Postsecondary Students, Gregory B. Lewis, Eddy Ng

PMAP Publications

Despite some evidence that gay men hold fewer government jobs in the U.S. than their population share would predict, analysis of two large surveys of Canadian university and college students shows no lack desire for public sector jobs among GLBTQs. Instead, we find that (1) GLBTQs are more likely than heterosexuals to prefer public and nonprofit sector employment; (2) GLBTQ career goals and work values predict a stronger desire for public and nonprofit sector jobs than do those of heterosexuals; and (3) GLBTQs expect to pay a smaller penalty for working in the public and nonprofit sectors. In partial support …

Are Chimpanzees Really So Poor At Understanding Imperative Pointing? Some New Data And An Alternative View Of Canine And Ape Social Cognition, William D. Hopkins, Jamie Russell, Joe Mcintyre, David A. Leavens Nov 2013

Are Chimpanzees Really So Poor At Understanding Imperative Pointing? Some New Data And An Alternative View Of Canine And Ape Social Cognition, William D. Hopkins, Jamie Russell, Joe Mcintyre, David A. Leavens

Language Research Center

There is considerable interest in comparative research on different species’ abilities to respond to human communicative cues such as gaze and pointing. It has been reported that some canines perform significantly better than monkeys and apes on tasks requiring the comprehension of either declarative or imperative pointing and these differences have been attributed to domestication in dogs. Here we tested a sample of chimpanzees on a task requiring comprehension of an imperative request and show that, though there are considerable individual differences, the performance by the apes rival those reported in pet dogs. We suggest that small differences in methodology …

An Analysis Of Gender Pay Disparity In The Nonprofit Sector: An Outcome Of Labor Motivation Or Gendered Jobs?, Lewis Faulk, Lauren Hamilton Edwards, Gregory B. Lewis, Jasmine Mcginnis Nov 2013

An Analysis Of Gender Pay Disparity In The Nonprofit Sector: An Outcome Of Labor Motivation Or Gendered Jobs?, Lewis Faulk, Lauren Hamilton Edwards, Gregory B. Lewis, Jasmine Mcginnis

PMAP Publications

Although pay differences between men and women with comparable characteristics are generally smaller in the nonprofit than in the for-profit sector, gender pay gaps in the nonprofit sector vary widely across industries. In some industries, gender pay gaps are as large as in the for-profit sector, but in others, women make more than comparably qualified men. Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling on the combined 2001-2006 American Community Surveys, we test nonprofit labor motivation theories against a gendered-job hypothesis to explain this variation. We find that gender pay gaps in the nonprofit sector are smaller in industries where nonprofits outnumber for-profits and …

Research was conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study the usability of two search interfaces – one tabbed interface similar to the current UNC-CH library homepage and one with a single search bar similar to Google. The UNC-CH Libraries also developed a combined search tool that pulls library resources from the Serials Solutions Summon service and from the Endeca-powered catalog. The usability test involved several tasks to determine interface preference, autosuggest’s utility, and the optimal location for the “best bets” recommendation box within the results. The usability testing also included having participants respond to a …

The Whole Picture - One Library's Assessment Activities, Sian Brannon Oct 2013

The Whole Picture - One Library's Assessment Activities, Sian Brannon

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

Assessment pervades every single department in the library, and every staff person has some part to play. In preparing for a new library strategic plan, and for campus SACS reaccreditation, the University of North Texas took the opportunity to identify exactly what assessments are being done, no matter how internal they may seem. A newly formed Assessment Workgroup identified qualitative and quantitative assessments being performed for both internal and external bodies, and mapped them to demonstrate to employees everything the library does to improve service quality, make workflows more efficient, and improve education for students.

This presentation will describe our …

Assessing The Data Management Needs Of Academic Researchers, Jennifer Doty, Vince Carter Oct 2013

Assessing The Data Management Needs Of Academic Researchers, Jennifer Doty, Vince Carter

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

This was part of a panel presentation given with Lizzy Rolando, Georgia Tech.

If properly documented, preserved, and made accessible, datasets can serve not only as the raw material underlying books and journal articles but also as stand-alone outputs of scholarly research. Academic librarians, with a long history of being stewards of scholarly documents, are increasingly taking up the task of being stewards of research data. Developing services that support research data management requires input from stakeholders across campus--faculty and student researchers, librarians, information technology experts, and other support staff. In our presentation we will discuss and reflect on recent …

"Common" Tools For Tracking The Use Of New Library Space, Joe Fennewald Oct 2013

"Common" Tools For Tracking The Use Of New Library Space, Joe Fennewald

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

As attentive as we were in gathering information for the design of our knowledge/learning/information commons, it is important that we subsequently assess how these spaces are being used. During the 2008 ARL Library Assessment Conference, 12 easy-to-use techniques were identified to help libraries gather information which could inform design. This program examines how extensively these techniques were used and how successfully they have been applied in post-construction assessments. This workshop will review the results of a survey of approximately 100 libraries with recently completed projects. The survey gathered information on:

  • Which of the 12 techniques, if any, were used in …

The Sound Of Social Cognition: Toddlers’ Understanding Of How Sound Influences Others, Rebecca Williamson, Rechele Brooks, Andrew N. Meltzoff

Psychology Faculty Publications

Understanding others’ perceptions is a fundamental aspect of social cognition. Children’s construal of visual perception is well investigated, but there is little work on children’s understanding of others’ auditory perception. The current study assesses toddlers’ recognition that producing different sounds can affect others differentially—auditory perspective taking. Two- and three-year-olds were familiarized with two objects, one loud and one quiet. The adult then introduced a doll, and children were randomly assigned to one of two goals: either to wake the doll or to let her sleep. Children’s object choice and the sound intensity they produced significantly varied in the predicted direction …

The neural mechanisms underlying genetic risk for schizophrenia, a highly heritable psychiatric condition, are still under investigation. New schizophrenia risk genes discovered through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), such as neurogranin (NRGN), can be used to identify these mechanisms. In this study we examined the association of two common NRGN risk single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with functional and structural brain-based intermediate phenotypes for schizophrenia. We obtained structural, functional MRI and genotype data of 92 schizophrenia patients and 114 healthy volunteers from the multisite Mind Clinical Imaging Consortium study. Two schizophrenia-associated NRGN SNPs (rs12807809 and rs12541) were tested for association with working …

We provided chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) with the ability to improve the quality of food rewards they received in a dyadic test of inequity. We were interested to see if this provision influenced their responses and, if so, whether it was mediated by a social partner’s outcomes. We tested eight dyads using an exchange paradigm in which, depending on the condition, the chimpanzees were rewarded with either high-value (a grape) or low-value (a piece of celery) food rewards for each completed exchange. We included four conditions. In the first, “Different” condition, the subject received different, less-preferred, rewards than their partner for each …

Reduced Neural Activation During An Inhibition Task Is Associated With Impaired Fear Inhibition In A Traumatized Civilian Sample, Tanja Jovanovic, Tim Ely, Negar Fani, Ebony Glover, David Gutman, Erin Tone, Seth D. Norrholm, Bekh Bradley, Kerry J. Ressler

Psychology Faculty Publications

Introduction: Impaired inhibition of fear in the presence of safety cues and a deficiency in the extinction of fear cues are increasingly thought to be important biological markers of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Other studies have suggested that there may be altered neural activation during behavioral inhibition tasks in subjects with PTSD. The current study aimed to see whether neural activation during inhibition was reduced in a highly traumatized civilian population, and whether atypical activation was associated with impaired fear inhibition.

Methods: The participants were 41 traumatized women (20 PTSD+, 21 PTSD-) recruited from Grady Memorial Hospital in …
