Addressing The Lack Of Availability In Diverse Skin Tone Options For Performance Wear, Jessica Batey Apr 2022

Addressing The Lack Of Availability In Diverse Skin Tone Options For Performance Wear, Jessica Batey

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

The following research addresses the lack of availability in diverse skin tone options for performance fabric. The project will discuss the struggles people of color face when finding fabrics that accurately match their skin tone and the difficulties in sourcing the materials needed to successfully design a garment. The research gathered will be used to produce a collection of 4 looks using nude mesh fabrics that are readily available to the average consumer. The garments within the collection will be designed to match the skin color of 4 models. The collection’s theme will be based around the 4 cardinal witches …

Public Health Interventions For Children Of Incarcerated Parents, Daniel Bullman Apr 2022

Public Health Interventions For Children Of Incarcerated Parents, Daniel Bullman

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

The impact of social and structural determinants of health have lifelong consequences on an individual’s quality of life. Literature focusing on child health and wellbeing of incarcerated parents indicate significant negative health outcomes and adopted detrimental health behaviors. Using a systematic realist review, recent publications were reviewed for their potential discussion or recommendation for interventions in changing health outcomes. This review found that additional research is needed in identifying and testing potential interventions or determining if parallel public health initiatives have had positive impacts in promoting the health behavior change process for children and adolescents of incarcerated parents.

Psychopathy, Empathy, And Prosocial Helping: Can You Increase Altruistic Helping For Individuals High In Psychopathy?, Courtney Beussink Apr 2016

Psychopathy, Empathy, And Prosocial Helping: Can You Increase Altruistic Helping For Individuals High In Psychopathy?, Courtney Beussink

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Psychopathy is a disorder encompassing a distinct set of interpersonal, affective, and behavioral traits including lack of empathy and remorse, manipulativeness, callousness, selfishness, antisocial lifestyle, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and social deviance. It is estimated that approximately 15-25% of incarcerated individuals and 0.6-1% of individuals within the community are high in psychopathy (Coid, Yang, Ullrich, Roberts, & Hare, 2009; Hare, 2003). Since psychopathic traits are linked with deviant behavioral outcomes and the prevalence rates are relatively high within forensic and community populations, interventions designed to target the core personality deficits and reduce psychopathic tendencies are needed. The current study seeks to induce …

Influence Of Game Stimuli On Participant Snacking, Emily Welsh Apr 2016

Influence Of Game Stimuli On Participant Snacking, Emily Welsh

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

In 2003 the Pew Research Center conducted a study which found the 70% of college students play some form of electronic game (video, computer, internet) (Jones, 2003), and it is our belief that this data has only increased with the iPhone take-over that took place in 2007. In 2015 the CDC reported that nearly 35% of adults in the United States are considered overweight or obese, and has been found to be a key influence in the onset Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and numerous other health concerns, to include mental illness in the form of depression, high anxiety, and …

Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian Apr 2016

Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Previous research has found racial background is a significant factor for the perception of police. However, there is little research done on the impact of the race of the police officer on the perceptions of police. This study examined the impact of racial influences on the perception of police. To study this, we used vignettes of a violent police citizen encounter, in which the officer's use of force was justified, unjustified, or ambiguous. Participants were randomly assigned to instructions, in which the police officer was identified as White or African American. Through self-report surveys, participants rated their perception of the …

Repetition And Formatting In Medication Instructions, Jessica Le Apr 2016

Repetition And Formatting In Medication Instructions, Jessica Le

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Comprehension of pictures and text in health-related materials like medication instructions and pamphlets plays a critical role in health outcomes. Understanding the materials can help promote information integration, information recall, medication adherence, and improved health communication. Existing research that address the effects of repetition in pictures and text have been in other contexts such as object assembly. It shows that repetitious multimedia results in better free recall and accuracy and response times in order verification (BrunyÌ© et al., 2008). Research also suggests that there is better recall for pictures integrated with the text than separated (Johnson & Mayer, 2012). However, …

Relationship Between Lidar-Derived Canopy Layering And Rainfall Redistribution In Forests Varies With Scale, Daniel Cirincione Apr 2016

Relationship Between Lidar-Derived Canopy Layering And Rainfall Redistribution In Forests Varies With Scale, Daniel Cirincione

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Forest canopy can reduce precipitation reaching the ground by up to 50% through interception, storage, and evaporation of droplets from leaf and bark surfaces. This process, called "interception loss," impacts runoff, recharge, flood flashiness, erosion, etc., and cost of stormwater management. It is not well understood how canopy structure affects interception loss, particularly in urban forests. This research addresses this issue by monitoring interception loss variables for a common south eastern US tree species (slash pine) across a natural-to-urban gradient in forest structure. This study considers three different sites to obtain the natural-to-urban gradient. Two of those sites are at …
