This presentation explores a model collaboration between the Digital Collections Center of the library and the History Department that has been highly successful in introducing students to researching with digital collections. We consider the use of history department undergraduate and graduate interns in the library and discuss the benefits and challenges to both parties. Digital librarians work to balance the sometimes competing goals of stewardship and access all while being responsive to the needs of patrons, content owners, and creators. This presentation explores the often unforeseen challenges and issues that can arise with the creation and management of digital collections. While ingesting digitized works into a repository brings up ever-present concerns such as copyright, others challenges exist within the realm of privacy (stalking, harassment, digital anonymity), plagiarism, and ownership (false claims of ownership) that are almost always unexpected.

This poster at the 2019 annual meeting of the South Florida Archivists highlights a project where the facial recognition technology of Adobe Lightroom CC is used to identify individuals in photographs held by a local municipal archive. The photographs contain hundreds of images showing unnamed commissioners and city workers from the 1970s to the 1990s, with most of the images lacking metadata or information. Various strategies are employed to identify key city officials in the photographs, allowing their names to be added to the metadata of the records hosted in a digital repository. This session explores the use of Digital Commons as both a hosting site and peer review and management tool for the creation of an online journal. In 2018 Florida International University (FIU) Libraries launched Athenaeum: Scholarly Works of the FIU Libraries Faculty and Staff. Athenaeum is meant to collect both published and unpublished articles, conference posters, and presentations of library faculty and staff as they pertain to librarianship. Presented at FIU Online’s Affordability Counts Workshop on March 3, 2019. FIU Librarians Christopher M. Jimenez and Ramces L. Marsilli present the library as a cost-effective alternative to textbooks. The librarians demonstrate ways to locate resources in both the catalog and in databases. They also demonstrate ways to embed content into canvas through permalinks and LTI's. Finally, the librarians announce OER options that are available to the faculty.

This demonstration uses the popularity and sophistication of voice recognition technology, and couples it with Springshare’s robust knowledge base software in order to create a powerful reference tool. The authors paired the Information and Research Services Department’s most popular FAQ’s with an Alexa Skill using the LibAnswers Application Programming Interface (API), and preloaded it onto six Alexa Show devices to increase engagement with our patrons.
