Dialectical Behavior Therapy Application Efficacy In The World Of An Athlete: Addressing Special Considerations, John P. Ferraro

The current project aimed to analyze the potential that Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training (DBT-ST) could have on the student-athlete population. The project necessitated a research exploration of both DBT and sports psychology treatment. This was accomplished by searching Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Library’s extensive databases, such as Academic Search Complete, PsycINFO, SportDISCUS, and Psycharticles. Considerations are discussed on athlete-specific concerns, such as stigma, athlete cultural views on mental health, eating disorders, coping through injury, and performance anxiety. Play Like You Mean It: Motivational Predictors Of Female Student Athletes' Practice And Game Performance, Zipporah Rebekah Foster

The current study explores how motivational reasons for goals influence athletic performance on a women's basketball team. The purpose of the current study was to expand on past research associated with fluctuation of motivation in practice and game performance throughout a season. Participants (n = 15) in the current study were female student-athletes, who completed a motivational survey that measured Relationally-Autonomous Reasons (RARs), Personally-Autonomous Reasons (PARs), and Controlled Reasons (CRs). Athletic performance was measured by examining daily practice performance and game statistics for each athlete. The results of the current study showed that RARs were associated with game performance (p < .05), however PARs and CRs were not. RARs were positively associated with game performance whereas PARs were not. The association for RARs and game performance was stronger than RARs and practice performance. Overall, the findings confirm that RARs are associated with game performance in women's sports.

Physical, Emotional, And Competitive Aggression Tendencies In Contact And Non-Contact Collegiate Athletes, Samyra Rose Safraoui

Differences in aggression tendencies between athletes who play a contact sport and athletes who play a non-contact sport at the collegiate level were investigated. Specifically, emotional, physical, and competitive aggression tendencies were measured for both groups and then compared to each other using independent t tests and effect sizes. One hundred student-athletes from a medium sized midwestern university participated in the study, with an even split between contact and non-contact athletes. Student-athletes were sent an electronic survey via email and Survey Monkey; all materials were approved by the university's Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Athletics department.
