"Is This Really A Police Station? Police Department Exteriors And Judgments Of Authority, Professionalism, And Approachability.", Ashley Clinton, Ann Sloan Devlin
Psychology Faculty Publications
This study examined the relationship between exteriors of police department facilities and participants’ ratings of the buildings’ authority, professionalism, and approachability. After a pilot study, research was conducted with 122 participants who were undergraduate students from a small, liberal arts college in the Northeast. On each of three characteristics (authority, professionalism, and approachability), participants rated 16 color images of police departments located in the United States. The façade ratings for each characteristic were then categorized into factors through factor analyses. There were three factors for authority (Ineffectual, Strong, and Outdated); three for professionalism (Unskilled, Non-traditional, and Governmental); and four for …

93rd Connecticut College Commencement Address, Cynthia Enloe '60
Commencement Addresses
Alumna and research professor of International Development, Community and Environment at Clark University Cynthia Enloe '60 spoke to the graduates about connections; their connections to the past, those present, and to those they may not know. "A connection should probably make you feel a little uneasy. Because if you make a connection it means you're beginning to take responsibility for that person's life. It means that that person is somehow affecting your life, but you're also affecting their life."

Fighting Back: Indigenous Mobilization In The Ecuadorian, Peruvian And Brazilian Amazon, Emily Culver
Latin American and Latino Studies Honors Papers
Progress, as defined by this thesis, is the continuing placement of profits over human beings. The pursuit of progress in Latin America has its roots in the colonial age when elites created a hierarchical system that served only their own interest and marginalized other members of their populations. Progress is particularly negative for indigenous people in the Amazonian region who find themselves giving up their land, resources and in turn their traditional lifestyles for the benefits of outsiders.
This framework has manifested itself in several examples: oil exploration and exploitation in Ecuador and Peru, rubber in Brazil and later hydroelectric …
The Role Of Rumination In The Function, Content, And Affective Quality Of Self-Defining Memories, Mary Gover
The Role Of Rumination In The Function, Content, And Affective Quality Of Self-Defining Memories, Mary Gover
Psychology Honors Papers
Rumination is a response to a negative mood that is characterized by an intense self focus, specifically on one’s negative feelings and the challenges or problems these feelings may pose (Nolen-Hoeksema, 1991). Numerous studies have stressed the maladaptive nature of this response style and several have begun to investigate its role in autobiographical memory recall (Lyubomirsky, Caldwell, & Nolen-Hoeksema, 1998; Lyubomirsky & Nolen-Hoeksema, 1995; Nolen-Hoeksema, Parker, & Larson, 1994). However, rumination research has yet to focus on self-defining memories which have an added relevance and importance to an individual (Singer & Blagov, 2004). The present study investigates rumination’s role in …
The Effect Of Biological Versus Environmental Causal Explanations On The Stigmatization Of Major Depression And Anorexia Nervosa, Briana Borenstein
The Effect Of Biological Versus Environmental Causal Explanations On The Stigmatization Of Major Depression And Anorexia Nervosa, Briana Borenstein
Psychology Honors Papers
This study investigated how biological and environmental causal explanations affect the stigmatization of college students described to have major depression and anorexia nervosa. Participants (38 male and 87 female college students) read a vignette about a college student with either major depression or anorexia nervosa that provided either a biological or environmental causal explanation for the disorder. Then, they completed a Social Distancing Scale; a Treatment Recommendations Scale; a Personal Responsibility Beliefs, Pity, and Anger Questionnaire; a Causal Attributions Scale; a Familiarity with Mental Illness Questionnaire; and a Demographics Questionnaire. Results indicated that participants stigmatized the target with anorexia more …
“Senioritis:” An Analysis Of Academic Motivation And Burnout In College Students Through The Lens Of Positive Psychology, Chelsea Manning
“Senioritis:” An Analysis Of Academic Motivation And Burnout In College Students Through The Lens Of Positive Psychology, Chelsea Manning
Psychology Honors Papers
The current study re-examined Chickering’s (1967) Student Development theory, which suggests student development decreases as academic conditions become constant and the novelty of the academic environment fades. Additionally, the researchers examined whether the need to present a GPA after graduation could be associated with academic motivation, importance, or effort (the academic variables). Through the lens of positive psychology, the researchers also investigated whether a decrease in academic motivation, importance, and effort was detrimental to student happiness and well-being. Major findings among the 43 total participants were: 1, an overall difference in academic variables between freshmen and seniors did not exist; …
Elementary School Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Classroom Accommodations: The Effects Of Disability And School Type, Sarah Holland
Elementary School Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Classroom Accommodations: The Effects Of Disability And School Type, Sarah Holland
Psychology Honors Papers
The purpose of this study was to compare the attitudes of elementary school teachers toward the inclusion of a student with either a moderate intellectual, physical, or behavioral disability. Participants were from eight different elementary schools; two magnet schools, one charter school, and five public schools from one school district. Participants were provided with a vignette describing one of three disability types and then rated 25 accommodations made for that student. Teachers’ attitudes toward these accommodations were measured by the three adapted subscales of the Adaptation Evaluation Instrument (AEI; Schumm & Vaughn, 1991), which addressed how desirable teachers believe each …
“Enemies Of Life In The Name Of Life”: Seed Patents, Gm Crops, And The Global South, Patricia Arenson
“Enemies Of Life In The Name Of Life”: Seed Patents, Gm Crops, And The Global South, Patricia Arenson
Anthropology Department Honors Papers
In the past few decades agribusiness in the global North has developed a booming industry in genetically modified (GM) crops; industry giants have secured patents and aggressively protected them to maximize profits. This new technology has been exported to the Global south, where its introduction has caused a cascade of horrific problems for farmers and non-‐farmers alike. GM crops and seed patents have exacerbated poverty, accelerated the loss of indigenous knowledge, and threatened to destroy ecosystems through the loss of biodiversity. This honors thesis explores these issues with a focus on the situation in India, where Vandana Shiva has led …
