Exploring Racial Variations In The Spousal Sex Ratio Of Killing, Wendy C. Regoeczi
Exploring Racial Variations In The Spousal Sex Ratio Of Killing, Wendy C. Regoeczi
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
The following article examines differences in the social situation of intimate partners as an explanation of racial differences in the female to male ratio of spousal homicides in Canada. An analysis of homicide data from 1961 to 1983 generated by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics reveals that the ratio of women killing their husbands to men killing their wives is highest for Aboriginals and lowest for Blacks, with the ratio for Whites falling in between. The possible sources of racial differences in this ratio include the proportion of couples (a) in common-law relationships, (b) who are co-residing as opposed …

Manufacturing Locations In Ohio: Shifts In Employment And Average Earnings Among Central, Suburban And Rural Counties, Robert Sadowski

Over the past two decades, there is some evidence suggesting that manufacturing jobs have moved away from central counties and into suburban and rural counties.1 In addition, there is an assumption that many of these jobs now pay lower average earnings th

The following pages provide a description of the City of Cleveland in regard to a variety of demographic, housing, economic, and social characteristics. The emphasis of the report is to illustrate the geographic variation of these characteristics and to identify recent and in some cases long-term trends in these distributions.
The report is mainly a series of maps and charts accompanied by basic descriptions of what the graphics illustrate. Maps enable the reader to see the geographic variation among and within the city’s neighborhoods. Appendix A provides a map showing the city’s Statistical Planning Areas (SPAs) and their names. A Twins Study Of Communicative Adaptability: Heritability Of Individual Differences, Michael J. Beatty, Lenora A. Marshall, Jill E. Rudd
A Twins Study Of Communicative Adaptability: Heritability Of Individual Differences, Michael J. Beatty, Lenora A. Marshall, Jill E. Rudd
Communication Faculty Publications
Recently, a model of communication theory and research has appeared in the literature within which stable individual differences in communication behavior represent individual differences in activation thresholds of neurobiological systems. The neurobiological systems thought to underly communication traits and behavior are assumed to be primarily due to genetic inheritance. As such, the model assigns a limited role to adaptability in social situations, instead positing communication adaptability as an inherited trait. In the present study, heritability estimates for the dimensions of communicative adaptability were derived from correlations based on identical and fraternal twins' responses to a multidimensional communicative adaptability measure. Results …
Ohio’S Competitive Advantage: Manufacturing Productivity, Edward W. Hill
Ohio’S Competitive Advantage: Manufacturing Productivity, Edward W. Hill
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The underlying theme of Dr. Hill’s book is that manufacturing is the connective tissue of the state’s economy. This is true in two ways: The first is in terms of the distribution of employment, and the second connection is in locations of different parts of the manufacturing production process. The key to increasing incomes in all parts of Ohio is to ensure that the products made in manufacturing production platforms remain competitive, which means vigorously pursuing public policies that enhance productivity—investing in both labor and capital.

The Symbiotic Circle Of Community: A Comparative Investigation Of Deviance Control In Intentional Communities, Zachary Rothenberg
The Symbiotic Circle Of Community: A Comparative Investigation Of Deviance Control In Intentional Communities, Zachary Rothenberg
Cleveland State Law Review
With each community considered, I will try to paint a picture of the many collectivizing factors at work: (1) the history or tradition of the community; (2) its underlying ideology, belief and value systems, and/or common interests or goals; (3) the nature of its communalism; (4)the nature of its isolation from the outside world; and (5) its decision-making and governance structure. Finally, I will look to its "gate-keeping" or circumference-drawing functions-how the community controls deviance and maintains unity within, while distinguishing itself from the chaos without. In Section I, I will consider two extreme examples of community (the Oneida Community …

Case Commentary - Martin V. Corporation Of The Presiding Bishop: Should Zoning Accommodate Religious Uses Or Vice Versa?, Alan C. Weinstein
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
In Martin v. Corporation of the Presiding Bishop, 747 N.E. 2d 131 (Mass. 2001), the highest court in Massachusetts rules that the Dover Amendment, a state statutes that denies local government the authority to "prohibit, regulate, or restrict the use of land or structures for religious purposes..." authorized the town of Belmont to grant a church special permission to build a steeple for a newly built Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints temple that was taller than the local zoning provisions would normally allow. Since Martin involved a Massachusetts statute, normally the decision would evoke limited interest, and …
Alvin W. Gouldner And Industrial Sociology At Columbia University, James Chriss
Alvin W. Gouldner And Industrial Sociology At Columbia University, James Chriss
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Alvin W Gouldner (1920-1980) was a prolific sociologist of the post-World War II era
who spent the early part of his career (the 1950s) in the field of industrial sociology. A
case study of Gouldner's early life and career is useful insofar as it intertwines with the
development of industrial sociology as a distinct subfield within sociology. Through this
analysis we are also better able to understand how and in what ways a burgeoning
organizational studies program developed at Columbia University during the 1940s. This
analysis of the historical and cultural contexts within which Gouldner came to prominence
as an …

In 1998, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland began a program-related initiative to increase the availability, affordability and quality of permanent, affordable housing units for low-income and underserved families and persons in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties. The Affordable Housing Initiative will award approximately six million dollars to community organizations over a five-year period. As part of this initiative, the Foundation funded more than 25 grantees to undertake a variety of non-capital projects. The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland State University was asked to evaluate the overall initiative and the projects of each of the grantees.
"On The Make": Campaign Funding And The Corrupting Of The American Judiciary, David R. Barnhizer
"On The Make": Campaign Funding And The Corrupting Of The American Judiciary, David R. Barnhizer
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
The thesis offered here is that the cost of judicial campaigns has reached a level where both candidates and sitting judges are shaping their behavior to attract financial and other support. This not only results in distortion of judicial selection by repelling meritorious potential candidates who are unwilling to compromise their principles, but in the capture of judges by special interests willing to finance judicial campaigns. Some argue that the great increase in contributions to judicial candidates simply means that contributors are giving to candidates they feel certain will support their positions. To some extent this is certainly true. But …
