Industrial Activity In Cleveland, Robert Sadowski, Ziona Austrian

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This report has four primary objectives. First, survey industrial activity in the city of Cleveland using employment and payroll data for the period from 1993 to 2000; report on key findings related to industry sectors and industries at the two-digit standard industrial classification (SIC) code level; and compare the city of Cleveland to suburban Cuyahoga County and the remainder of the Cleveland primary metropolitan statistical area (PMSA). Second, identify those industries in Cleveland that reported substantial employment levels, average annual wages, employment growth, and wage growth during the study period (high performing industries). Third, discuss the status of previously identified …

Cleveland State University: An Economic Impact Study, Ziona Austrian Dec 2002

Cleveland State University: An Economic Impact Study, Ziona Austrian

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The economic value of an urban university to a metropolitan region is comprised of (1) the educational opportunities provided to students who rely on local institutions of higher education, (2) the unique contributions of urban universities to the social and political infrastructure of a region, and (3) the research and service contracts and other funds and philanthropic donations attracted to the campus by faculty and staff. If an urban university such as Cleveland State University (CSU) did not exist in the Cleveland metropolitan region, many, if not all of these economic and social contributions would be lost. In addition, the …

The Impact Of Density: The Importance Of Nonlinearity And Selection On Flight And Fight Responses, Wendy C. Regoeczi Dec 2002

The Impact Of Density: The Importance Of Nonlinearity And Selection On Flight And Fight Responses, Wendy C. Regoeczi

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Unlike commonsense notions and the findings from animal research, the literature concerning the effects of density on human social behavior is paralyzed by contradictory findings. This article examines empirically two fundamental issues which could account for this and which are central to the density-crowding debate: (1) whether observed crowding effects are the result of causation or selection and (2)whether individuals are negatively affected by both low and high levels of density. Data from the Toronto Mental Health and Stress study are analyzed using structural equation modeling to investigate these questions. The results support the notion that the effects of density …

Urban Universities And Real Estate Development, Ziona Austrian, Jill Norton

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This report is intended to enhance the understanding of the role that urban colleges and universities have in local economic development through university real estate investment activities. Colleges and universities across the country are becoming more involved in property acquisition and development; however, there is limited research that explores the decision-making processes that are employed and the implications of these decisions on the larger community.

Content Analysis In Mass Communication: Assessment And Reporting Of Intercoder Reliability, Matthew Lombard, Jennifer Snyder-Duch, Cheryl C. Bracken Oct 2002

Content Analysis In Mass Communication: Assessment And Reporting Of Intercoder Reliability, Matthew Lombard, Jennifer Snyder-Duch, Cheryl C. Bracken

Communication Faculty Publications

As a method specifically intended for the study of messages, content analysis is fundamental to mass communication research. Intercoder reliability, more specifically termed intercoder agreement, is a measure of the extent to which independent judges make the same coding decisions in evaluating the characteristics of messages, and is at the heart of this method. Yet there are few standard and accessible guidelines available regarding the appropriate procedures to use to assess and report intercoder reliability, or software tools to calculate it. As a result, it seems likely that there is little consistency in how this critical element of content analysis …

New Media And The Circuit Of Cyber-Culture: Conceptualizing Napster, Bryan C. Taylor, Christof Demont-Heinrich, Kirsten Broadfoot, Jefferson Dodge, Guowei Jian Jun 2002

New Media And The Circuit Of Cyber-Culture: Conceptualizing Napster, Bryan C. Taylor, Christof Demont-Heinrich, Kirsten Broadfoot, Jefferson Dodge, Guowei Jian

Communication Faculty Publications

Media studies scholars have employed the "cultural circuit" model to analyze media in the context of capitalist political economy. This model identifies interrelated "moments' in which the meanings of cultural products are determined, negotiated, and subverted in interaction between producers and audiences. The turbulent evolution of new media, however, requires continuous reflection on the adequacy of conceptual tools. Analysis of recent controversy surrounding the Internet music-exchange service Napster indicates that the cultural circuit model must be modified to accommodate the emerging media of cyber-culture.

Old Age Support In Contemporary Urban China From Both Parents’ And Children’S Perspectives, Rongjun Sun

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

This article explores the links between old age support and the characteristics of both parents and children drawing on survey data collected in Baoding, China, in 1994. Three specific forms of support are examined: monetary transfers, in-kind gifts, and help with daily activities. Hierarchical modeling is applied to the analysis from childrens perspective to control for the unobserved family heterogeneity. Results indicate that intergenerational support within families is currently the major source of old age security in Chinese society. Analyses from both parents’ and childrens perspectives support the corporate group/mutual aid model, which largely …

Mothers In The Media: Blamed And Celebrated -- An Examination Of Drug Abuse And Multiple Births., Sonya Charles, Tricha Shivas

Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications

The media has always had a profound interest in mothers and birth stories. This study examined the difference between media portrayal of 'good' mothers and 'bad' mothers. Did the media cover potential harm to fetuses and would-be children in the same way for two groups of mothers: (a) pregnant women addicted to illicit drugs and (b) women who chose to continue a high-order, multiple birth pregnancy? Two searches were conducted on Lexis-Nexis, one with keywords 'McCaughey and birth' and another with the keywords 'pregnancy and illegal drugs.' A total of 210 articles were coded for the McCaughey search, and 90 …

Housing First: Documenting The Need For Permanent Supportive Housing (Executive Summary), Susan Hertzler Burkholder, Kathryn W. Hexter

Five years ago, very few people would have believed that it was possible to end homelessness for the most marginalized Americans. Today, the idea that we can end the cycle of homelessness and institutionalization for vulnerable Americans is so mainstream that the Bush administration declared in its 2003 budget proposal that it considers “ending chronic homelessness in the next decade a top objective.” The key to this turnaround in thinking is supportive housing, an approach that is both smart and compassionate” according to a recent editorial in the New York Times. It is a concept that is proving to be …

Gouldner's Tragic Vision, James Chriss Jan 2002

Gouldner's Tragic Vision, James Chriss

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Classical literature, specifically ancient Greek philosophy and especially the study of Greek tragedy, is helpful in tracing out and understanding the transitions Alvin Gouldner made during his career as a sociologist. This article argues that a latent tragic orientation or vision existed during Gouldner's early career as a standout in the field of industrial sociology and that this tragic vision became manifest around 1962 as Gouldner was developing more and more strident denunciations of establishment sociology. This case study of Gouldner's career teaches a valuable lesson about the importance of the tragic vision in helping sociologists to understand the limitations …

The Brownfields One Stop Shop (BOSS) is the culmination of a process created over a year ago that brought together several federal and local public agencies to address the complexities of applying resources to support brownfields redevelopment. The idea was originally developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 brownfields Project Manager, Edwin Smith, and by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Cleveland Office Community Builder, Paul Diegelman. Together, they developed an initial concept for a collaborative introductory meeting, and presented the idea to the Cleveland Federal Executive Board members. The project was accepted as …
