One’S A Crowd: Gendered Language In Ursula Le Guin’S The Left Hand Of Darkness, Kayla Stephenson May 2016

One’S A Crowd: Gendered Language In Ursula Le Guin’S The Left Hand Of Darkness, Kayla Stephenson

Senior Capstone Theses

Deconstruction questions the very meaning of words put into an assigned use. Yet how can we imply meaning unto words that do not exist in our language? To have a word for an intended use is to have an implied concept behind it, and where there is no concept there can be no word. Consequently, to construct a concept outside of the realm of human and earthly possibility is to create something outside of the limits of the human language. Concerning gender, to imagine a third or a singular gender is to be unable to describe such a concept without …

Pantsuits And Public Opinion: An Analysis Of Media Coverage Of U.S. Female Political Candidates, Mary Kate Martin May 2016

Pantsuits And Public Opinion: An Analysis Of Media Coverage Of U.S. Female Political Candidates, Mary Kate Martin

Senior Capstone Theses

Although women comprise over half of the population of the United States, they are vastly underrepresented in all levels of American government. This paper seeks a possible explanation for the small number of females in American political leadership positions. Some scholars have suggested that media portrays female candidates negatively, which influences public opinion negatively. This paper examines the extent to which this is the case, analyzing articles about Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Nikki Haley, Wendy Davis, and their male opponents from The Washington Post and The New York Times for examples of media framing, media bias, and reporting using gender …

An Integrated Theoretical Approach For Applying Evidence-Based Practices To Art Therapy, Ashley Walter May 2016

An Integrated Theoretical Approach For Applying Evidence-Based Practices To Art Therapy, Ashley Walter

Senior Capstone Theses

Evidence-based practice is a scientific approach to therapy that uses research to determine whether or not interventions are efficacious. In the field of art therapy, patients may not be receiving the best possible treatment due to the lack of well-researched evidence-based practices. This deficiency means that clinicians cannot be certain of the efficacy of their interventions, thus running the risk of wasting patients’ time and money on treatment that is not healing them, or worse, is actually causing them harm. This ethical dilemma can be somewhat remedied by employing an integrated theoretical approach. So, how then, can an integrated theoretical …

Faith And Protracted Social Conflicts: Faith And Loathing In Sarajevo, Joseph Mcniff Apr 2016

Faith And Protracted Social Conflicts: Faith And Loathing In Sarajevo, Joseph Mcniff

Senior Capstone Theses

Bosnia is a peculiar state. This peculiarity stems from its ethnic and religious heterogeneity that has, in the past, created a multicultural and remarkably tolerant society. This was exemplified by the city of Sarajevo, which showed off its multiculturalism and its supposedly inclusive social structure to the world during the 1984 Winter Olympics. Ten years later, however, the tolerance and inclusiveness of Sarajevo was under siege by the Yugoslav military (JNA) and paramilitaries associated with the Serbian Democratic Party (SDS). The Yugoslav Wars of Succession (1991-2002) tends to be categorized as an ethnic conflict stemming from primordial, or ancient, hatreds. …

Queer Anthropology And The Mapping Of “Human”, Markeeta Holmes Apr 2016

Queer Anthropology And The Mapping Of “Human”, Markeeta Holmes

Senior Capstone Theses

This research examines the many actors and ideological movements at the intersection of sexuality, agency, and power that influence lalas to create their identities. Critiquing notions of sex, gender, and sexuality via Chinese lala experience not only reveals fissures and discontinuities in the "reality" of these categories, but also de-essentializes Western notions of the normal queer. Rather than being an extension of the queer movement in the West, the tongzhi movement in China is unique and although Western imaginings construct its own queerness as the first and only in the world, these struggles have always been forthcoming in other parts …

A Pinocchio Problem: Bureaucratic Drift And Constitutional Separation Of Powers, Brittanie Edstrom Apr 2016

A Pinocchio Problem: Bureaucratic Drift And Constitutional Separation Of Powers, Brittanie Edstrom

Senior Capstone Theses

The U.S. Constitution outlines a three-branch government, with each branch having separate and distinct powers, and a system of checks and balances to maintain accountability. According to these two principles, the federal bureaucracy has the authority to execute legislative action but it must remain accountable to Congress to ensure that congressional statutory intent is reflected in the execution of legislation. When the bureaucracy does not accurately execute the wishes of Congress, these principles are violated. Scholars have labeled this phenomenon bureaucratic drift. This thesis will examine the interplay between Congress and the Bureaucracy and attempt to address the following question: …

Less Than Agency: Religious Agency And The System Of Disability, Jasmyn Kopcsandy Apr 2016

Less Than Agency: Religious Agency And The System Of Disability, Jasmyn Kopcsandy

Senior Capstone Theses

In the following essay, I will attempt to extend the understanding of disability as a
constitutive system – based on the social model of disability proposed by Mike Oliver – to the discussion of religious agency. I will first ground this theoretical application in a literature review with two areas of focus: (1) the dichotomy of modernity/secularism and religion, and (2) conceptualizations of agency. Specifically, my research question will be: how can “disability” as a category of analysis serve as a lens through which to analyze Western perceptions of religious agency in reference to Muslim women, and how does ableism …

The Effect Of First Language Dialect On Second Language Accent, Sarah Yaure Apr 2016

The Effect Of First Language Dialect On Second Language Accent, Sarah Yaure

Senior Capstone Theses

The purpose of this study was to discover how dialectal differences in L1 Spanish impact the L2 English pronunciation of 6 speakers (5 dialects). Spanish and English share several sounds (phonemes) such as /m, n, f/. However, both languages also contain distinct phonemes (Whitley, 2002). Due to this imperfect overlap, phonemes that are distinct in English may have been grouped into one category by learners, reflecting the Spanish inventory, which makes it more difficult to differentiate sounds in received and therefore produced English speech (Flege 2004). Even among Spanish dialects, phonemes can vary (Whitley, 2002). As a result, speakers of …

No More Bed, Bath And Bread? The Netherlands' Discontinuation Of Unconditional Support For Asylum Seekers, Bethany Hess Apr 2016

No More Bed, Bath And Bread? The Netherlands' Discontinuation Of Unconditional Support For Asylum Seekers, Bethany Hess

Graduate Theses & Dissertations

The refugee crisis in the European Union has acted as a test for the domestic policies of its member states. This is especially true for the Netherlands. Expecting a large influx of refugees, the Netherlands reevaluated its refugee policies. Consequently, the government decided to close down regional asylum shelters, and discontinue what was informally recognized as the bed-bath-bread regulation. The new refugee policy taking its place would create reception centers for asylum applicants and failed asylum seekers working on a process for voluntary return. The new policy would force any failed asylum seeker thought to be in noncompliance with voluntary …
