Technology Transfer In Poland: An Investment Of U.S. Government, U.S. Corporate, And Polish Government Strategies, Susan E. Hays

Theses and Dissertations

This case study examines how U.S. Government (USG) policy, U.S. corporate policy, and Polish government policy affect the strategy of technology transfer of military and/or dual-use technologies in Poland. The traditional supplier/recipient relationship is explored and found to be insufficient to describe the process associated with military and/or dual-use technology transfer. An alternate model is proposed that accounts for the activities of the USG, U.S. corporations, and the Polish government. These relationships are investigated in the context of six strategies to determine the validity of the model in the case of military and/or dual-use technology transfer to Poland. The analysis …

Full Integration Of Women In The Air Force: Myth Or Possibility?, Helen M. Newell Sep 1998

Full Integration Of Women In The Air Force: Myth Or Possibility?, Helen M. Newell

Theses and Dissertations

The full integration of women in the military, particularly the United States Air Force, has been an ongoing effort. Based on the definition of "full integration" as allowing all qualified military personnel the opportunity to hold any position and accomplish any mission, given that they are in possession of the required capabilities and training, without restriction, certain issues have arisen during the course of the integration process. These issues include sex, as defined by gender and function, the capability of women to accomplish the same tasks as men, and the combat issue. To support and establish the full integration of …

The Demographic And Behavioral Patterns Of Visitors To The Usaf Museum, Charlene V. Purtee

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force Museum, located at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, provides an overview of the Air Force's aviation history, free to the public. In 1996, the Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides financial support for the display of the aviation memorabilia, attempted to determine the demographic representation of the Foundation membership. In their analysis the Foundation found that the membership represented only a small portion of the actual population that visited the Museum annually. In 1997, a second survey was accomplished to establish a cursory demographic breakout and answer a variety of questions from the visitors at the …

The Factors That Motivated American Ground Forces To Fight During Combat In Vietnam, William A. Schum Sep 1998

The Factors That Motivated American Ground Forces To Fight During Combat In Vietnam, William A. Schum

Theses and Dissertations

Many people debate the policies of the United States government with respect to the conduct of the Vietnam War. The war was unpopular, at best, and many argued that our military should not have fought for South Vietnam. So, what compelled American ground forces to fight an atypical enemy? This thesis explores the motivational factors that influenced the military ground forces on a daily basis. Past research conducted on previous wars serves as the guideline for the methodology used. Combat narratives are the data sources and references to motivational factors by the authors are the data. As a whole, the …

Military Members Responses To Sexually Harassing Behavior: Response Types And Efficacies, Michael W. Braucher Sep 1998

Military Members Responses To Sexually Harassing Behavior: Response Types And Efficacies, Michael W. Braucher

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses four sexual harassment response constructs and evaluates the efficacy of the responses. The constructs are built based on individual or joint/collaboratory responses and whether or not the harasser is confronted with his or her behavior(s) perceived as harassing by the victim. The constructs are applied to the 1995 Department of Defense survey of Harassment. Results include each response's effect on the harassing behavior, whether the behavior is ceased or not. A second result is the victim's perception of improvement or worsening of the situation based on the response type used. Tests for proportional differences were used to …

An Economic/Demographic Comparison Of Air Force And Other Service Families, John C. Glover Sep 1998

An Economic/Demographic Comparison Of Air Force And Other Service Families, John C. Glover

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to compare economic, attitudinal and demographic variables for families in all branches of service to see in which areas the Air Force is ranked/rated higher and lower than other services. Analysis is broken out by officers and enlisted personnel in all main branches of service (Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines). Two testing methods are employed to determine if there is a difference between the services: Tukey's multiple comparison procedure, and pair-wise comparisons of proportions for the different services. Results indicate that Air Force officers rate the Air Force higher for lower number of …

General Logistics Paradigm: A Study Of The Logistics Of Alexander, Napoleon, And Sherman, Richard Alan Hardemon Sep 1998

General Logistics Paradigm: A Study Of The Logistics Of Alexander, Napoleon, And Sherman, Richard Alan Hardemon

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the campaigns of Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte and William T. Sherman. By analyzing the influences of the logistics policies and practices employed during these campaigns common underlying logistics principles are identified. The resultant logistics principles are then codified into a logistics paradigm to be used when developing and managing operational level logistics. Using an analysis schema that employs inductive reasoning, principles of historical analysis and critical thinking, each of the three campaigns is analyzed to identify events of interest. The events of interest are specific occurrences during the campaign when what occurred was directly influenced by …

Media Selection In The Air Force Environment: How Communications Requirements Influence Effectiveness As An Outcome Of Media Choice, David L. Hillman Sep 1998

Media Selection In The Air Force Environment: How Communications Requirements Influence Effectiveness As An Outcome Of Media Choice, David L. Hillman

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past two decades, great interest has been given to the research of media choice within organizations. However, there is still confusion over which factors influence media choice. This study examined the effectiveness of five media under different conditions in an effort to better understand which factors impact media choice. Through the examination of several theories on communication and media choice, a theoretical model was created to determine if effectiveness is an outcome of media choice. To test the proposed model, a 54 scenario policy capturing instrument was developed and distributed. Results from the study support the theory that …

Republic Of Korea Weapons Acquisition Through The Post-Cold War And The Case Of The Sam-X Project: Implications For Us-Rok Relations, George A. Hutchinson Sep 1998

Republic Of Korea Weapons Acquisition Through The Post-Cold War And The Case Of The Sam-X Project: Implications For Us-Rok Relations, George A. Hutchinson

Theses and Dissertations

The dissolution of the Soviet Union has ushered in a new era. With the Cold War arrangement no longer in place, relations between the US and friendly nations are being subject to redefinition. In the arms trade, the post-Cold War era has produced expanded opportunities for recipient countries, opening new and autonomous paths for defense acquisition. For the Republic of Korea (ROK), a traditionally steadfast recipient of US weapons and weapons technology, this has resulted in the emergence of alternative sources for arms procurement. Thus, the supplier-recipient relationship between the US and ROK, traditionally dominated by US supplier control, is …

The Commercialization Of Space Transportation: Exploring The Impact Of The National Space Transportation Policy, Thomas L. Johnson Sep 1998

The Commercialization Of Space Transportation: Exploring The Impact Of The National Space Transportation Policy, Thomas L. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The 1994 National Space Transportation Policy designates the roles of the DoD, NASA and the Departments of Transportation and Commerce to identify and promote innovative types of arrangements between the U.S. government and the private sector in order to reduce the cost to access space. DoD, civil and commercial industry leaders agree that the price to access space is currently exorbitantly expensive. The solution to this expense, which the United States Government is relying upon, is the commercialization of space transportation technology. This research focuses on investigating the industry and policy commercialization trends which led to the 1994 NSTP, and …

Nationalism In Spain: Is It A Danger To National Integrity?, Fernando Pastor Villar

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years there has been a worldwide resurgence of ethnic nationalism as ethnic minorities have seen in this ethnic differentiation a better way to increase their political power within the states where they reside. Spain is a complex country divided into a number of contrasting regions with widely varying economic and social structures as well as different historical, political, and cultural traditions that includes different languages. This extreme complexity is related to its national diversity and also to the political and social articulation of nationalist claims within the state. This study arrives at five conclusions. First, Basque and Catalan …
