Explaining Presenteeism Through Social Exchange And Expectancy Theories, Christopher Russo

A growing interest in presenteeism, attending work despite being ill, has led to an increase in research on the construct across various disciplines. The objective of this research was to provide a cohesive definition from prior literature, measure presenteeism in a novel manner, and identify potential casual explanations to expand the presenteeism literature within Industrial-Organizational Psychology. In this study, presenteeism was operationalized as, “attending work and putting forth effort at work while ill,” and was measured using behavioral intentions (the intent to presentee). Significant increases in childhood asthma prevalence and mortality has prompted federal and regulatory agencies to work towards a national framework to address childhood asthma. Quality of life is an important component of chronic disease, and the evaluation of healthcare outcomes. There is little discussion in the literature regarding the implications of QoL as a theoretical construct. This study determined the effect of asthma on the QoL of our study population and caregiver’s missed workdays on the child’s QoL scores. A negative relationship was found between the child’s QoL and the caregiver’s missed workdays due to their child’s asthma. The use …

The Effects Of Type Of Child Care Arrangement And Satisfaction With Care On Employee Job Satisfaction And Absenteeism, Hanh Hong Nguyen

This study examined the effects of different types of child care arrangements (i.e., care by relatives; care by nonrelatives; self-care by child; and care by day care centers) and satisfaction with care on employee absenteeism and job satisfaction. A 53% response rate was obtained from a questionnaire administered to 501 classified staff employees at Portland State University. Only responses from employees with children under the age of 18 living at home were used. Eighty-six employees met this selection criterion.
It was hypothesized that parents using self-care by child would have the highest absences, followed by parents using day care centers, …
