Socially Disorganized Rural Communities, Kenneth D. Tunnell
Socially Disorganized Rural Communities, Kenneth D. Tunnell
Justice Studies Faculty and Staff Research
The article talks about the social disorganization of rural communities in the U.S. It is stated that family farming has been on the decline for decades, with the numbers of farmers dropping by 16 million since 1950 and farms decreasing by over 4 million during the past century. It is inferred that a part of a community's history and way of life are being forfeited when local business are closing. According to the author, the theory of social disorganization emphasizes social integration and stability as necessary conditions for community. It offers some of the disadvantages of disorganized communities, such as …

After years of accelerating growth, the U.S. economy achieved a soft landing in 2006. The rate of economic growth remained positive but slowed sufficiently to reduce inflation pressures and the need for further interest rate increases. At the same time the economy remained strong enough to continue the current expansion which has been in place since late 2001. Such a soft landing is vital because it should allow the economy to continue to expand for years to come, but with moderate inflation.

Celebrating the Centennial of the Antiquities Act (October 9)
For 100 years, the Antiquities Act has been used by nearly every President in the 20th century to set aside and protect lands threatened with privatization and development. The list of lands first protected under the Antiquities Act – and that might never have been protected without it – is truly remarkable. Many of our most treasured national parks including the Grand Canyon, Olympic, Zion, Arches, Glacier Bay, and Acadia, began as national monuments. All told, Presidents have issued 123 proclamations setting aside millions of acres of land under the Antiquities Act.

Depression, Sensation Seeking, And Maternal Smoking As Predictors Of Adolescent Cigarette Smoking, Judy Van De Venne, Kay Bradford, Catherine A. Martin, Megan Cox, Hatim A. Omar
Family Sciences Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine maternal and adolescent depression, maternal and teen sensation seeking, and maternal smoking, and their associations with adolescent smoking. Data were collected from a sample of 47 male and 66 female adolescents (ages 11-18 years) and their mothers from three different health clinics. The findings indicated that maternal sensation seeking was linked indirectly with adolescent smoking through teen sensation seeking, both of which were significantly associated with teen smoking (β = 0.29, p < 0.001 and β = 0.32, p < 0.001, respectively). Teen depression was associated positively with teen smoking (β = 0.24, p < 0.01) when controlling for sensation seeking behaviors. Maternal smoking was also directly linked to adolescent smoking (β = 0.20, p < 0.05). These findings underscore a potentially important role of sensation seeking in the origins of adolescent smoking, and clarify pathways of influence with regard to maternal attitudes and behaviors in subsequent teenage nicotine use.

A Comparison Between The West & The East In State Supervised Control Through The Power Of Eminent Domain, Eman Mga Eshmawy
A Comparison Between The West & The East In State Supervised Control Through The Power Of Eminent Domain, Eman Mga Eshmawy
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Eminent domain is a problem that effects both the West and the East. This thesis focuses on blighted homes that are confiscated by government and later used for private if not corporate reasons rather than for public use intentions. The comparison is between the United States and Egypt, and three neighborhoods are discussed from each country separately. The comparison is between two quantitative analyses' between the United States and Egypt showing that this type of eradication of property allows for the authority and power of government to be used negatively towards society. The surveys were collected during approximately a two …

Brain Drain Or Gain: Migration Of Knowledge Workers From India To The United States, Anjali Sahay
Brain Drain Or Gain: Migration Of Knowledge Workers From India To The United States, Anjali Sahay
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation looks at the topic of brain drain from a new lens. It departs from the traditional literature to include discussion on brain gain and brain circulation using Indian migration to the United States as case study. While it cannot be denied that host countries have policies that encourage or provide the necessary conditions for brain drain to take place, it must be taken into account that many source countries now benefit from out-migration of their workers and students. These are usually measured as remittances, investments and savings associated with return, and network approaches that, with a connectionist approach, …
Personal Responsibility Versus Government Responsibility Welfare Attitudes Post-1996, Emily C. Ing
Personal Responsibility Versus Government Responsibility Welfare Attitudes Post-1996, Emily C. Ing
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
The welfare system in the United States underwent a major overhaul in 1996, transforming Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) to Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). Since then, there has been little research conducted on attitudes toward welfare. This is still a topic worth investigating, as poverty and homelessness remain a problem in the United States.
This thesis hypothesized that attitudes about welfare would vary according to an individual's commitment to individualism, a hegemonic value in the United States. This thesis also hypothesized that welfare attitudes would vary according to an individual's education, gender, marital status, race, and …
Social Regulatory Policy : A Challenge To Federalism, Kimberly Janet Russell
Social Regulatory Policy : A Challenge To Federalism, Kimberly Janet Russell
Dissertations and Theses
Access to assisted suicide has been the center of a federal standoff between Congress and the state of Oregon since 1998, but few academic papers on American federalism acknowledge this development. Through the initiative and referendum process, Oregonians gave themselves the right to assisted suicide in 1998. Congress reacted immediately, attempting to overturn the Oregon law with national legislation. By historical and constitutional precedent states control issues related to events of daily life such as birth, death, marriage, and healthcare issues. In reality, Congress has entered the arena of moral policymaking and protection under the Tenth Amendment is unreliable. The …

Rethinking The Iraq War, Brian Stiltner
Rethinking The Iraq War, Brian Stiltner
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
The reasonable possibility of the situation getting worse [in Iraq] rather than better should have given humanitarian advocates for war, like myself, greater pause. For me at that time, this humanitarian motive bolstered what was weak in the weapons argument, and vice versa. But now I realize that a partial case for war because of the weapons risk and a partial case for war under humanitarian reasons don't add up to an air-tight case for just war. Each of the causes proffered has to be reasonable with little doubt-something like 90 to 95 percent certain-and they can't be undermined by …
How Dangerous Is The U.S. Current Account Deficit?, William Poole
How Dangerous Is The U.S. Current Account Deficit?, William Poole
Center for Applied Economics
The U.S. current account deficit has attracted considerable attention from academics, policymakers and market participants. So also has the U.S. international investment position—the difference between U.S.-owned assets abroad and foreign-owned assets in the United States. The net position has become increasingly negative as current account deficits have accumulated over time. I have spoken on international topics several times in recent years, emphasizing the importance of international capital flows for explaining the evolution of the U.S. international accounts. I’ll review some of my prior analysis today, but want to concentrate on the question in my title.
