Inventory Accounting And Profit Evaluation, Riccardo Fiorito Dec 1991

Inventory Accounting And Profit Evaluation, Riccardo Fiorito

riccardo fiorito

In an inventory model with exogenous sales, FIFO and LIFO criteria are formalized and compared with national account estimates for intermediate and finished good products. The model is simulated using manufacturing input and output prices for Italy (1970-88). LIFO and NIPA estimates of inventory are usually close and also imply reliable measures of output levels and changes which can be shown by solving the quantity model. Conversely, FIFO exhibits larger profits and leads in real terms to unsatisfactory estimates of output changes.

The Role Of Federal Taxation In The Supply Of Municipal Bonds: Evidence From Municipal Governments, Gilbert E. Metcalf Nov 1991

The Role Of Federal Taxation In The Supply Of Municipal Bonds: Evidence From Municipal Governments, Gilbert E. Metcalf

Gilbert E. Metcalf

This paper considers ways in which federal tax policy affects municipal asset and debt holdings. The tax treatment of municipal bonds and income creates an arbitrage opportunity for communities to issue tax-exempt debt and invest in financial assets. The author presents evidence that suggests the rules in effect prior to 1986 to prevent this activity were not effective. He then develops and estimates a model of municipal bond supply. The author finds a semielasticity of 1.23 of long-term debt with respect to the spread between the after-tax rate of return and the municipal borrowing rate.

Naked Exclusion, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, J. Mark Ramseyer, John Wiley Nov 1991

Naked Exclusion, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, J. Mark Ramseyer, John Wiley

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Ordinarily, a monopoly cannot increase its profits by asking customers to sign agreements not to deal with potential competitors. If, however, there are 100 customers and the minimum efficient scale requires serving 15, the monopoly need only lock up 86 customers to forestall entry. If each customer believes that the others will sign, each also believes that no rival seller will enter. Hence, an individual customer loses nothing by signing the exclusionary agreement and will indeed sign. Thus, naked exclusion can be profitable.

Trends In Industrial Development, John Mullin Nov 1991

Trends In Industrial Development, John Mullin

John R. Mullin

Zenia Kotval and John Mullin review the key issues involving local land use decisions and industrial development in Massachusetts. They point out that the cumulative impact of town after town discouraging industrial development has resulted in creating a state where land use is a limiting factor for industrial development and growth. Concurring with recent thinking on economic development, the authors take a strong stance that our future economic well being must be based on a mixed economy where industry and manufacturing are a key player.

Summer Reading For Hearty Souls, Steven Alan Samson

Steven Alan Samson

Each of these books stands as a reproach to our secularized educational system which fails to challenge either our minds or our hearts. Our growing ignorance of history and literature is severing the cultural lifeline of our civilization and orphaning our young people. As Zacharias (A Shattered Visage), Kuehnelt-Leddihn (Leftism Revisited), and Nickel (Mathematics: Is God Silent?) have shown, it is necessary to strip away the pretensions of our flight from God and begin a major facelift.

Clues To Paleoindian Survival: Underwater Caches My Have Supplied Meat In Winter, Kimberly J. Sawtelle

Kimberly J. Sawtelle

Dr. Daniel C. Fisher of University of Michigan's Museum of Paleontology and Department of Geological Sciences has found intriguing new information at the Heisler and other sites concerning Paleoindian food-caching behavior. New lines of evidence suggest Paleoindian peoples stored meat from proboscideans by anchoring under water in ponds.

“The Return to the Built City”. This paper examines some hypotheses related to the transformation process that urban transportation in Quito is undergoing with the introduction of the trolleybus. The paper emphasizes an urban integrated perspective rather than a sectored one to provide a clearer perception of the process of transformation of the key channels which sustain the quality of urban communication. The paper comprises three parts: the first part defines the current context in which urban transport transformations develop; the second part examines the link between transportation and the new trends in urbanism; and the third and final part …

Extending The Economic Theory Of Regulation: The Form Of Policy, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Mark Zupan Mar 1991

Extending The Economic Theory Of Regulation: The Form Of Policy, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Mark Zupan

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

The mutually beneficial connection between industries and the governments that regulate them is the subject of a large literature led by Stigler (1971). What has not been studied is how firms choose their desired policies from the set including entry barriers, price floors, subsidies, and demand stimulation. We take as given that government and incumbents form the supply and demand for regulation and explore the choice of political product.

School Milieu Characteristics And Disordered Eating In High School Graduates, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Patricia A. Connor-Greene, Sandra Shime Feb 1991

School Milieu Characteristics And Disordered Eating In High School Graduates, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Patricia A. Connor-Greene, Sandra Shime

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Research has confirmed a relationship between our culture's emphasis on thinness and disordered eating. The present study south to expand our understanding of the relationship between sociocultural variables and disordered eating. It hypothesized that students from high schools that encourage competitiveness, value traditional feminine behaviors and conformity to traditional norms, and discourage social support and interpersonal involvements among students are particularly likely to report symptoms of disordered eating and related psychopathology. Social climate measures, an abbreviated Eating Disorders Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the UCLA Loneliness Scale were completed by 211 female high school graduates recruited among the incoming …

An Existential-Phenomenological Investigation Of The Psychotherapeutic Interpretive Process Enabling Immediate Insight, Paul Murray Ph.D. Jan 1991

An Existential-Phenomenological Investigation Of The Psychotherapeutic Interpretive Process Enabling Immediate Insight, Paul Murray Ph.D.

Dr. Paul Murray

An Existential-Phenomenological Investigation Of The Psychotherapeutic Interpretive Intervention Process Enabling Immediate Insight: Theoretical and technical preoccupations with the value of interpretation in the psychotherapeutic process have established a formal understanding in the literature that has given only oblique reference to the actual experience of the therapist in practice. "Interpretation" has for the most part been left dangling above and beyond the immediate grasp of the novice therapist as an objectified ideal of great importance. Practical application of this intervention has suffered due to a mystification of its lived nature in the traditional literature. The current qualitative research study is a …

General Equilibrium Of A Regional Economy With A Financial Sector - Part 1: An Accounting Framework With Budget And Balance Sheet Linkages, Merritt R. Hughes Jan 1991

General Equilibrium Of A Regional Economy With A Financial Sector - Part 1: An Accounting Framework With Budget And Balance Sheet Linkages, Merritt R. Hughes

Merritt R Hughes

An accounting framework is presented that can be used as a basis for a regional general equilibrium economic model that meaningfully incorporates both real and financial activity. The accounting framework describes a circular flow from regional income to credit base, and back to regional income, including the balance of payments identity. Both real market transactions and capital stock changes are explicitly recognized. Linkages between real activity flows and sectoral balance sheets are highlighted. Financial activity is recognized as a service, and all assets are assumed to be valued at market prices.

Multidimensional Scaling Of The Eight State Questionnaire And The Differential Emotions Scale, Gregory J. Boyle, Ilana Katz Jan 1991

Multidimensional Scaling Of The Eight State Questionnaire And The Differential Emotions Scale, Gregory J. Boyle, Ilana Katz

Gregory J. Boyle

While the interrelationships between multivariate measures of mood states have been analysed using various statistical procedures including exploratory factor analysis, discriminant function analysis, multiple regression analysis, and canonical-redundancy analysis, the techniques of Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) however, have been used less extensively in psychometric research. MDS provides a readily interpretable representation of empirical relationships between different sets of data. The present study attempted to replicate Boyle's (1986a; Psychological Reports, 59, 503–510) factor analytic findings on two self-report multidimensional mood-state measures, namely the Eight State Questionnaire (8SQ), and the Differential Emotions Scale (DES-IV), to demonstrate the utility of MDS to uncover the …

Item Analysis Of The Subscales In The Eight State Questionnaire (8sq): Exploratory And Confirmatory Factor Analyses., Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The Eight State Questionnaire (8SQ) is a comprehensive self-report inventory which has been used in numerous studies of multidimensional mood states. The 8SQ has been useful in clinical situations for evaluating the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions, as well as in other contexts. The instrument takes about 20-25 minutes to administer, thereby enhancing its usefulness as a quick measure of transitory, constantly fluctuating mood states. Nevertheless, examination of the congeneric factor structure of the 8SQ subscales suggests that a number of the items are complex, contributing significantly to more than one subscale dimension. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses have …

Interset Relationships Between The Eight State Questionnaire And The Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1991

Interset Relationships Between The Eight State Questionnaire And The Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The interrelationships between emotional/mood states and related psychophysiological states was examined in terms of the measurement overlap (redundancy) across two multidimensional psychometric instruments. Subscale similarities and differences across the Eight State Questionnaire (8SQ) and the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) were studied using multiple regression procedures on a sample of 370 undergraduates. In addition, canonical-redundancy analyses were employed in order to estimate the quantitative overlap across the two self-report instruments. Although the two instruments were designed to measure somewhat different entities (mood states and psychophysiological symptoms), it was hypothesised that some interset commonalities would emerge in regard to the normal female …
