Stock Banks And Mutual Banks, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Oct 1988

Stock Banks And Mutual Banks, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Because mutual banks do not allow shareholders to discipline bad managers and so have higher costs, they have been disappearing since bank entry deregulation in the 1980's. They were common before regulation in the 1930's, and are more common in the 19th century. I propose that this is because of the absence of deposit insurance. Depositors wanted safety more than low operating costs, and a mutual manager, in a cushy job he could not lose except by bankrupting his firm, would also value safety.

A Pollution Control Approach To Analysis Of The Balanced Budget Amendment, Robert L. Sexton, Dwight R. Lee Sep 1988

A Pollution Control Approach To Analysis Of The Balanced Budget Amendment, Robert L. Sexton, Dwight R. Lee

Robert L Sexton

Fiscal Pollution (excessive budget deficits), in certain aspects, is like environmental pollution. In both types of pollution some, possibly most individuals would be willing to reduce their own pollution if others would do the same. In the case of fiscal pollution individuals would be willing to give up their special interest demands if others would reciprocate in kind. But as long as individuals are forced to pay for the programs of others there is little incentive to reduce their own demands. Hence, restraints on political hehavior such as a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution are needed to control …

Impact Of Exchange Variables On Exit, Voice, Loyalty, And Neglect: An Integrative Model Of Responses To Declining Job Satisfaction, Caryl E. Rusbult, Dan Farrell, Glen Rogers, Arch G. Mainous Aug 1988

Impact Of Exchange Variables On Exit, Voice, Loyalty, And Neglect: An Integrative Model Of Responses To Declining Job Satisfaction, Caryl E. Rusbult, Dan Farrell, Glen Rogers, Arch G. Mainous

Glen Rogers

This research offers a new theory predicting the effects of three exchange variables, job satisfaction, investment size, and quality of alternatives, on four general responses to dissatisfaction—exit, voice, loyalty, and neglect. Three studies designed to test model predictions' received good support. High satisfaction and investment encouraged voice and loyalty and discouraged exit and neglect. Satisfaction and investment interacted, with variations in investment most strongly promoting voice given high satisfaction. Better alternatives encouraged exit and voice and discouraged loyalty. However, there was no link between alternatives and neglect.

Entry For Buyout, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Mar 1988

Entry For Buyout, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Entry into a monopolized industry may be profitable if the entrant is bought out even if it would be unprofitable to enter for continuing operation. The stronger is duopoly competition, the greater is the incentive for buyout, so an incumbent's toughness in produce-market competition may be his own undoing. Evidence from the 1890's shows examples of entry for buyout.

Infant Mortality And Social Work: Legacy Of Success, Terri Combs-Orme Mar 1988

Infant Mortality And Social Work: Legacy Of Success, Terri Combs-Orme

Terri Combs-Orme

Although it is not widely known, social workers have had a substantial part in the impressive reduction in infant mortality achieved in the United States during this century. This article reviews that contribution, noting a decline in interest in infant mortality in the profession beginning in the 1950s. Recent trends are noted that seem to suggest a renewal in the profession's interest in this important subject.

What Does The Neuropsychological Category Test Measure?, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1988

What Does The Neuropsychological Category Test Measure?, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The Halstead Category Test of brain dysfunction is one of the most sensitive neuropsychological measures currently available. While the instrument has received widespread use, nevertheless, the exact nature of what it measures has been poorly delineated. The present brief report presents the results of separate factor analyses of the Category Test along with other neuropsychological measures from the Halstead-Reitan battery. Despite considerable differences in samples, as well as in the particular neuropsychological measures included in the separate analyses, the Category Test consistently lined-up with general intellectual and memory components, in each instance.
