Taking Comfort In Virtual Humor: Tolkien Memes As Adaptation And Escape, Nick Polk

Journal of Tolkien Research

Presented at the inaugural Prancing Pony Podcast Moot in 2021, this paper's aim is to argue that Tolkien memes can be classified as adaptation as Linda Hutcheon defines adaptation and argue for a hermeneutic of Tolkien's concept of Escape, as laid out in his essay On Fairy-stories, as way to understand Tolkien meme creation and circulation. Concluding remarks are given to the spreadability of Tolkien memes among Tolkien fan communities.

Online learning provides opportunities for pedagogical growth and innovation. When tasked with teaching an undergraduate Gender and Communication class during a virtual semester (amid the COVID-19 pandemic), I sought ways to engage students through online technologies rather than working against or despite them. The Digital Waves (DW) assignment, one that asks students to research and then create digital representations of a particular “wave” of feminism, was one of several strategies I adopted; it quickly evolved into a favorite.

Exploring the development of algorithms in Lacanian theory, specifically the "R schema" in the 1950s, I argue that psychoanalysis, read through contemporary debates about the "algorithmic cult" of Netflix and other avatars of popular culture, can be said to reveal the inhuman, machinic essence of subjectivity. Undergraduate students enrolled in a university class created an elementary social studies book delivered to computers, personal communication devices, and tablets. This essay advocates for the reinvigoration of imitatio pedagogy to reestablish disciplinary commitment to civic education in perilous democratic times. I argue that imitatio offers a needed response to several contemporary democratic challenges. After mapping out three theoretical relations of imitatio, I describe one approach for inculcating democratic citizenship via imitatio designed for undergraduate education. Finally, I conclude by reflecting on the specific affordances of imitatio education in the digital age and call on educators of rhetoric and communication to once again perceive democratic well-being as a disciplinary responsibility.

This paper explores the current controversies surrounding film preservation in the digital era. Questions address the benefits of new technologies and the potential sacrifices to a film's authenticity and designation as a valued historical, social, and cultural artifact. Issues examined include film's frail format, archives's financial and storage limitations, the concept of "the original film," and how current digitization methods affect each of these areas.
