Distribution Of Heavy Metals, Soil Microbial Enzymes And Their Relationship In Kano, Northwestern Nigeria, Mansur Abdul Mohammed, Emmanuel Adewale Olowolafe

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)

The increase in population and industrial growth has led to increased production of industrial and domestic waste which contain heavy metals in various forms. Therefore, affect the diversity and activities of soil microbes and subsequently affect environmental sustainability. This research aimed at assessing the distribution of heavy metals, soil enzymes, and evaluate the functional relationship if any. The study area was divided into two locations as contaminated and control; thus, each location one square kilometre was demarcated and divided into 25 small square (grid). A Sample was collected in each grid from 0 – 15 cm depth using point composite …

Abu Grain is a town located 106 km (66 mi) east of Misrata and 138 km (86 mi) west of Sirte with an estimated population of 2,000 inhabitants. The town is known for its strategic road intersection connecting the Mediterranean cities of Misrata and Sirte with the desert district of Jufra. Between February and March 2016, Abu Grain’s population fled as Islamic State (IS) group forces advanced into town in an attempt to expand control toward the west of its stronghold in Sirte. According to the Libyan Red Crescent, Abu Grain’s inhabitants mostly fled to Bani Walid, Misrata, and Tripoli.

Determination Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) On Selected Dumpsites In Abeokuta Metropolis, Sw, Nigeria, Olufunmilayo O. Olayinka, Oludare H. Adedeji, Ayodele R. Ipeaiyeda Sep 2015

Determination Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) On Selected Dumpsites In Abeokuta Metropolis, Sw, Nigeria, Olufunmilayo O. Olayinka, Oludare H. Adedeji, Ayodele R. Ipeaiyeda

Applied Environmental Research

Knowledge of the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in urban soils remains insufficient in developing countries like Nigeria despite their toxic effects and suspected human carcinogens, mutagens and endocrine disruption. This study aimed to determine the concentration of PAHs in soil of three dumpsites in Abeokuta metropolis, Ogun State, Nigeria. Concentrations of individual PAHs were determined using Gas Chromatography Flame Ioni-zation Detector (GC-FID). The total PAHs concentrations at 0-15 cm depth were 29.0 mg kg-1, 41.6 mg kg-1 and 11.9 mg kg-1 for Igbore, Saje and Alogi dumpsites respectively while the corres-ponding total PAHs concentrations at 15-30 cm depth …

Reducing Contamination In Forensic Science, Carly Balk May 2015

Reducing Contamination In Forensic Science, Carly Balk

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The sensitivity of modern forensic techniques has drastically increased, with sensitive technology detecting even the smallest traces of DNA evidence left behind. This has made it possible to detect DNA profiles deposited through contamination. When DNA contamination occurs in forensic science, it has the potential to change the outcome of a criminal investigation and may have significant social and financial repercussions. A compilation of global research shows that DNA evidence transfer can occur during forensic product manufacturing, the fingerprinting process, or even autopsy and crime lab examinations. These vital areas of the forensic investigation are vulnerable to contamination, and national …

Evaluation Of Chemotherapy Contamination Following The Implementation Of Closed System Transfer Devices, Warunsuda Sripakdee, Suphat Subongkot, Wannaporn Wattanawong, Saroch Onlaor Jan 2015

Evaluation Of Chemotherapy Contamination Following The Implementation Of Closed System Transfer Devices, Warunsuda Sripakdee, Suphat Subongkot, Wannaporn Wattanawong, Saroch Onlaor

Applied Environmental Research

This studycompared thecontamination of the chemotherapeutic agent cyclophosphamide between using a conventional admixing procedure and closed system transfer devices (CSTDs). Surface wipes and urine samples were collected for two weeks before and two weeks after the CSTDs were used. The surface wipe samples were collected from critical areas in an aseptic dispensary unit and a chemotherapy patient care unit. The urine samples were collected from healthcare workers. Contamination from cyclophosphamide in the surface wipe samples was detected in fewer areas following the implementation of CSTDs. The mediancyclophospha-mide concentration in aseptic dispensary unit areas following the usage of CSTDs was significantlylower …

Erw Contamination In The Pacific Islands, Justin Smith

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The legacy of explosive remnants of war (ERW) has affected the daily lives of Pacific Islanders for more than 70 years. ERW contamination in the Pacific stems from conflict between the Allied forces and Japanese forces during World War II. Survey, clearance and information-management programs are helping to manage the continued risks to the impacted populations.

Investigating The Effectiveness Of Malic Acid, Nisin, And Grape Seed Extract Incorporated Into Whey-Protein Coatings To Inhibit The Growth Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Ready-To-Eat Poultry, Amanda Bettasso, Navam Hettiarachychy, Vidya Chitturi, Michael Johnson Jan 2008

Investigating The Effectiveness Of Malic Acid, Nisin, And Grape Seed Extract Incorporated Into Whey-Protein Coatings To Inhibit The Growth Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Ready-To-Eat Poultry, Amanda Bettasso, Navam Hettiarachychy, Vidya Chitturi, Michael Johnson

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The ability to control growth of Listeria monocytogenes on ready-to-eat poultry products with the antimicrobials nisin, malic acid, and grape seed extract incorporated into whey-protein coatings was evaluated. The antimicrobials were incorporated into the coating solution alone and in combinations. One gram pieces of turkey frankfurters were coated with the coating solutions and then inoculated with L. monocytogenes and stored at 4°C for 28 days. The inhibitory effect of the coatings on turkey frankfurter pieces was evaluated on d 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28. Coatings containing 2% malic acid, 3% malic acid, and the combination of nisin (6,000 IU/g) …
