Food is defined by Britannica, a web-based encyclopaedia, as any substance consisting of protein, carbohydrate, fat, and other nutrients used in the body of an organism to sustain growth and vital processes, and to furnish energy.8 In a similar definition, Wikipedia described food as any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism; adding that food is usually of plant, animal or fungal origin, and contains essential nutrients. The above definitions explain why food is viewed as an essential need of life. However, the production of food has been declining in recent times for some reasons, including the adverse …

Averting The Looming Food Crisis: A Clarion Call To Immediate And Near-Term Policy Action, Alwan A. Hassan
Economic and Financial Review
Nigeria suffers from food insecurity and poverty. It is estimated that the number of hungry people in Nigeria is over 53 million, which is about 25.0 per cent of the country’s total population of about 212 million. Also, about 43.0 per cent of Nigerians live below the poverty line. These statistics are worrisome, given that Nigeria, in the 1950s and 1960s, was not only self-sufficient in food production, but was also a net exporter of food to other regions of the continent (Ajayeoba, 2010). A nation is food secure when food is available and accessible in sufficient quantity and quality …

Economic and Financial Review
Discussions on food security have gained traction in the recent past, especially in Africa and other developing economies. Several horrifying images of famished families, particularly around “The Horn of Africa” including Somalia, Ethiopia, and some parts of Kenya, projected globally in both the print and electronic media vividly illustrate the perils of food crises. In Nigeria, food constitute a substantial share of family budgets, particularly for low-income households. When prices of essential foods items increase poorer people suffer the adverse impacts more disproportionately. While clothing and shelter are basic necessities of life, food remains the most vital, given its centrality …

The article in question presents a comparative study of the demographic dividend in the light of the demographic change lived and the development system adopted in Morocco during the last five decades. The demographic transition in Morocco is at present in a very advanced phase following the impressive decline in the natural growth. This decline has had important repercussions on the population pyramid whose base has narrowed considerably. As well, the population, remaining still young, lives at the rhythm of the growth of categories in working age. In addition, the spatial movements of the Moroccan population are not made without …

The aim of study is to identify the general and detailed features of the sex structure at the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and to identify the changes that occurred during the 2004 and 2015 censuses, as well as to highlight the spatial variance between administrative units at the level of kingdom. This article analyzes the impact of demographic factor on territorial organization of production in rural areas of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and reveals the main trends in production development. The analysis of statistical data of rural areas is given and proposals to improve the negative situation are given. More than 1306.8 thousand people live in rural areas of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, where they are concentrated in 1187 settlements, 26 urban settlements, and 11 towns of district subordination. All this testifies to the presence of large undeveloped production reserves and huge human potential. However, due to reduction of Amudarya water …

Strong Church, Weak Catholicism: Transformations In Brazilian Catholicism, Carlos Alberto Steil, Rodrigo Toniol
Journal of Global Catholicism
In this paper we explore data on Catholicism from the 2010 census in Brazil, as well as other data from the Center for Religious Statistics and Social Investigation. Using these statistics, we question those arguments that explain the reduction in the number of Catholics in Brazilian society as a problem in the institution’s adaptation in response to the challenges of evangelization, or as a lack of ministerial vocations to meet the religious demands of the people. Pursuing an alternative argument, we consider the weakening of the relationship between the Catholic institution and traditional popular Catholicism to be a fundamental aspect …
Population Trends In The Area Where Nuclear Power Plants Are Located Before And After The Fukushima Accident And Their Impact On The Estimated Population, Takeshi Inoue
Japanese Society and Culture
Comparing the population trends in the areas where nuclear power plants are located with those in the neighborhood reveals it is declining and more so in the former than in the neighborhood. The cause is thought to be that the nuclear power plant was shut down for a long time after the earthquake and the Fukushima accident. However, such a decline is not necessarily due to the decrease in employment opportunities of the electric industry itself, but from electric-related industries. Regarding the estimated future population, the percentage of nuclear-located areas with the possibility of disappearing as defined by the Regional …
