Keep The Faith Not The Guilt: Demonization Of Sex Workers, Jessica Hodges
Keep The Faith Not The Guilt: Demonization Of Sex Workers, Jessica Hodges
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
Previous research shows that religiosity and attitudes about sexual topics are strongly correlated and typically negative. That is, as religiosity increases, views toward sexual topics tend to become more conservative or generally more negative in valence. However, current research also suggests that one’s sexual guilt may be the mediating influence in the relationship between religiosity and negative sexual attitudes. The present study seeks to replicate and extend research that examined the extent to which an individual's religiosity and sexual guilt influence their perspective of pornography and sex workers (Study 1). To replicate this (Study 2), a survey containing relevant measures …

Spirituality, Religion, And Mental Health Among Deaf And Hard Of Hearing People: A Review Of The Literature, David A. Barclay, Matthew A. Rider, Eileen A. Dombo
JADARA
Spirituality is increasingly being used in both assessment and intervention strategies. Available peer-reviewed literature and recent published dissertations are reviewed related to spirituality and religion among deaf and hard of hearing people. Knowledge is integrated in the context of mental health practitioners who work with deaf and hard of hearing people. Several themes including disability meanings, communication, family dynamics, and macro accessibility and representation are identified as topics to be applied to current mental health practice and future mental health research related to spirituality among deaf and hard of hearing people.

Conflict Between Religious Beliefs And Sexuality: An Autoethnography, Carlos E. Gerena
Conflict Between Religious Beliefs And Sexuality: An Autoethnography, Carlos E. Gerena
The Qualitative Report
Despite the shift in attitudes in religious institutions toward homosexuals in the United States, there are some religions that continue to view same-sex behavior as a deviant and damning sin. For many, religious beliefs and values provide meaning and impact personal identity. Using autoethnography, I will explicate my own experiences with religious institutions and the ongoing conflict between religious beliefs and sexuality. I will discuss messages received from the Pentecostal church, family, and Latino community, and how these messages influenced my human development and emotional well-being. I show that internalization of the principles taught by the Pentecostal Church triggered a …
Producing An Lgbt Religious Organizational Identity: The Case Of Dignityusa, Nik Lampe, James Cavendish, J. E. Sumerau
Producing An Lgbt Religious Organizational Identity: The Case Of Dignityusa, Nik Lampe, James Cavendish, J. E. Sumerau
The Qualitative Report
In this exploratory study, we examine the production of an organizational LGBT religious identity utilizing the case of DignityUSA. To this end, we engage in two interconnected analyses. First, we revisit and verify the findings of Loseke and Cavendish (2001) concerning the production of what they called a “Dignified Self,” which LGBT Catholics may use to integrate their religious-sexual-gender identities. Then, we expand on their analyses of DignityUSA in the late 1990’s to outline the ways DignityUSA constructs an organizational identity their members may draw upon to construct the Dignified Self and integrate their sexual/gender and religious identities. In so …
Arabic: Why Indonesians Have To Learn It?, Letmiros Letmiros
Arabic: Why Indonesians Have To Learn It?, Letmiros Letmiros
International Review of Humanities Studies
Arabic has many virtues. The first virtue of Arabic is that it is part of Islam. Then, Arabic as one of the old languages in the world has an amazing history of civilization. Furthermore, Arabic is an international language that has been used as one of the official languages of the United Nations since 1973. Because of these advantages, Arabic is interesting to be studied and researched by non-Arabs including by Indonesians. Arabic is studied, in addition to the purpose or because of the factors of Islam, also because of the factors of world life, for the demands of work …

A Qualitative Expert Interview Approach Towards Understanding Religious Extremism Among Malaysian Youth, Norhafezah Yusof Associate Professor, Amrita Kaur Dr, Mohd Azizuddinbin Mohd Sani Prof. Dr, Rosna Awang Hashim Prof Dr
The Qualitative Report
Religious extremism among Muslim youth is an emergent challenge and a variety of factors contribute towards its rise. However, few studies have explored this phenomenon in predominantly Muslim countries. Using expert interview approach, this study explored factors that provoke Malaysian youth into joining religious extremist groups and discussed findings from a social-ecological theory perspective. Inductive thematic analysis guided by socio-ecological theory was employed to analyze the data. Factors identified were Islamic Ideology-choice & Interpretation, Ummah and Practicality, and Charismatic leadership. The investigation through the social-ecological lens suggests that these causes mainly interacted at the macro-ecological and community-levels to influence the …

The Crisis Of Cultures And The Vitality Of Values: A Commentary On Emmanuel Macron’S Declaration Of The Need For Religion, Scott Atran
New England Journal of Public Policy
French president Emmanuel Macron’s claim that society needs religion is explored in the light of rising populism and illiberalism, and failures allied to the forced gamble of globalization. Historical and experimental research indicates that the universal religions have no fixed meanings or essences that drive followers. Religions have adapted to many contexts and cultures because core elements are believed sacred and transcendental, that is, non-negotiable, logically inscrutable, empirically unverifiable or falsifiable and therefore always open to interpretation under changing sociopolitical influences. Recent studies in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe suggest that “devoted actors” committed to transcendental causes are …

Dusty Shoes: Appalachia Wisdom Fertilizing The Future Of Religious Leadership, Jill Crainshaw
Journal of Appalachian Health
Dust from their journeys through the hills and hollows of Appalachia clings to their shoes and has forever shaped their vocational journeys. This is a refrain I have distilled from the reflections of students who have participated in Wake Forest University School of Divinity’s multicultural contexts course that includes a 10-day sojourn in the mountains of North Carolina.
Ultraconservatives In A Contentious Cusp Between Past And Future: A Review Of Dan Brown’S Novel "Origin", Lucas Miranda
Ultraconservatives In A Contentious Cusp Between Past And Future: A Review Of Dan Brown’S Novel "Origin", Lucas Miranda
Class, Race and Corporate Power
Taking Dan Brown’s latest novel Originas a thought-provoking heuristic device, this essay discusses the many facets of ultraconservatives’ anti-intellectualism (from their stances on evolution and climate change, and also their conspiracy theories). Brown’s novel particularly details the cultural tension between progressives and conservatives, depicting a very real far-right and how they respond to a hopeful and diverse youth (while exploring how political perception, fake news, and public information in the virtual era affect politics). The essay concludes that by raging war at science and deliberately making policies against progress, conservatives are at war against rationality itself, by defaming reason …
Religious Couples Re-Storying After Infidelity: Using Narrative Therapy Interventions With A Focus On Attachment, Mark Karris , M.A., M.Div., Katarena Arger , M.A
Religious Couples Re-Storying After Infidelity: Using Narrative Therapy Interventions With A Focus On Attachment, Mark Karris , M.A., M.Div., Katarena Arger , M.A
Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review
Attachment-focused narrative interventions used with religious couples of the Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) dealing with the effects of infidelity is discussed in this article. With religious couples, the couple attachment bond is commonly harmed after infidelity. The attachment bond with God can also be affected with one or both partners. Partners who once felt close and connected with God can feel angry and distant because of infidelity. Since the Abrahamic faiths are narrative-based religions, and an attachment bond with God is essential, attachment-focused narrative interventions can help couples re-story their relationship with each other and with God. Attachment-based …
Enlightenment And Religious Tolerance As A Factor In Ensuring Peace And Stability, Xamutaliyev Ozodbek Payzilloyevich
Enlightenment And Religious Tolerance As A Factor In Ensuring Peace And Stability, Xamutaliyev Ozodbek Payzilloyevich
Uzbekistan Journal of Oriental Studies
The article considers religious tolerance as the basis for ensuring internal stability and integration of the society, keeping them from upheavals, suppressing the split of nations and states. According to Article 31 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, “Freedom of conscience is guaranteed for all. Everyone has the right to profess any religion or not to profess anyone. Forced imposition of religious beliefs is unacceptable”. As noted in Article 61 of the Constitution, “religious organizations and associations are separated from the state and are equal before the law. The state does not interfere in the activities of religious …

The Practice Of Secularism In Religious Cencorship In Turkish Film (1939-1990), Aditama Aditama, Nadira Bella Rachmanti, Siti Rohmah Soekarba
International Review of Humanities Studies
This paper analyzes a film as one of the media with the ability to convey certain messages to the public. Films can reflect the social and cultural conditions of society, thereby they can be used to spread the current ideas, views, and ideologies of a country. Films in Turkey are part of a culture that has developed rapidly and has become an entertainment for the people. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk reformed and turned Turkey into a new country with the ideology of secularism, controlling religious institutions and expressions. This journal article aims to describe the implementation of Turkish secular ideology in …
Are U.S. Congregations Patching The Social Safety Net? Trends From 1998 To 2012, Emily Warren, Melody Waring, Dan Meyer
Are U.S. Congregations Patching The Social Safety Net? Trends From 1998 To 2012, Emily Warren, Melody Waring, Dan Meyer
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
As social services become increasingly privatized amid a federal policy environment that provides a means-tested, temporary social safety net, there is potential for a larger contribution by congregations as social service providers. Using data from a nationally representative sample of religious congregations collected in 1998, 2006, and 2012, we examine whether congregations have increased service activity over time, and whether provision varies by the congregation’s community-level context. We find that post-Great Recession, congregations are more likely to engage in broad social services and in “core” services that address basic economic needs. Congregations in high-poverty neighborhoods were less likely to provide …

“But I Only Wanted Them To Conform”: A Detailed Look Into The Initial Cohort Of Girls At The Indiana Reformatory Institution For Women And Girls Between 1873 And 1884, Molly Whitted, Michelle Williams
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
For the past four years, as part of a group of currently and formerly incarcerated scholars, we have researched the “inmates” and staff at the Indiana Women’s Prison during the institution’s first decade. Then known as the Indiana Reformatory Institution for Women and Girls, the facility was located near downtown Indianapolis on Randolph and Michigan Street. We focused on a key constituent of the Indiana Reformatory for Women and Girls: the girls themselves, heretofore voiceless and uninvestigated.
Our primary sources include the annual reports of the reformatory and the original registries for the girls during the survey period of 1873–1884. …

Namaste In The Usa: The Growing Pains That Traditional Yoga Faces In America – An International Marketing Case Study, Clay T. Wilderman, Mona Sinha
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
Yoga is a mind, body, and spiritual practice that originated nearly 5,000 years in India. It is known to relieve stress, enhance athletic performance, increase strength and flexibility as well as assist in achieving inner peace, focus, and improving mental wellness. In recent years, the practice of yoga has grown exponentially in the United States with about 37 million practitioners in 2016. However, the future growth of yoga in the U.S faces some critical challenges. American innovations in yoga techniques and the rise of the yoga accessories industry with deep linkages with consumerism, is drawing the practice away from its …
In Pursuit Of ‘Twin Toleration’: Democracy And Church–State Relations In Serbia And Montenegro, Marko Veković
In Pursuit Of ‘Twin Toleration’: Democracy And Church–State Relations In Serbia And Montenegro, Marko Veković
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This paper explores the relationship between church and state in Serbia and Montenegro by examining the development of ‘twin toleration’. In particular, it aims to explain why there is still no ‘twin toleration’ in these states, and why it is important to impose such institutional arrangement in church–state relations. The ‘Twin toleration’ concept suggests that institutional arrangements between the state and religious communities in a democratic society should be based on mutual autonomy, in which the state should not interfere in the matters of religious communities, and vice versa. However, since the fall of communism and resurgence of religion, both …
