Non-Selection As A Factor Contributing To Retirement From Australian Sport, Maree B. Fish Jan 1994

Non-Selection As A Factor Contributing To Retirement From Australian Sport, Maree B. Fish

Theses : Honours

Retirement from sport is inevitable and will occur at some stage in every athlete's career. Retirement may be voluntary or involuntary and signifies a lifestyle change that may be a major impact for many athletes. Involuntary retirement may occur in relation to chronological ageing, injury or non-selection. This study undertook an in-depth examination of one type of involuntary exit from sport, that of non-selection. The purpose of this study was to explore, in-depth, the reactions and experiences of Australian athletes who were subject to non-selection from their sport. Supporting this main investigation were three sub questions which focused on factors …

A Study Of Men In Non-Traditional Male Occupations, Fiona Raewyn Kelly Jan 1994

A Study Of Men In Non-Traditional Male Occupations, Fiona Raewyn Kelly

Theses : Honours

In the past the majority of occupations were very clearly divided into 'men's work' and 'women's work' and such attitudes persist today. The man who crosses over into an occupation traditionally considered to be a female occupation upsets society's gender assumptions. Some research indicates that there are many advantages for these men; others have found that it is a difficult transition creating many problems for the men involved, one of the most significant being the persistent questioning of their sexual orientation. This research takes a close look at the experiences of four men in non-traditional male occupations. The subjects studied …

A Comparative Study Of The Migration Experiences Of Filipino And Thai Brides In Western Australia, Belinda Greensill Jan 1994

A Comparative Study Of The Migration Experiences Of Filipino And Thai Brides In Western Australia, Belinda Greensill

Theses : Honours

Bride migration which includes unpaid labour migration is a new development in international labour migration. The factors which have contributed to recent increases in bride migration from developing counties in the South East Asian region to post-industrialised countries include changes in the international economic system and the international division of labour, and popular stereotypes of Filipino and Thai women, and conservative notions of women1s domestic roles which are prevalent in Australia. This study focuses on Filipino and Thai bride migration to Western Australian within the context of international labour migration. Most of the literature on Filipino and Thai female migration …

Issues That Concern Prison Officers About Hiv Positive Prisoners In Western Australia, David Francis Cain

Theses : Honours

In 1988 the Department of Corrective Services established an AIDS Standing Committee to draw up an HIV positive/AIDS policy. The Committee consists of ten members, two of whom are union members who represent the issues that concern 1,227 prison officers statewide. The Policy which was issued in 1989 medically isolated HIV positive prisoners from the mainstream prison population. The aim of this research is to identify and quantify the issues that concern prison officers about HIV positive prisoners in Western Australia. Such information will act as a medium through which these will be communicated to the AIDS Standing Committee. Structured …

Do Women Retire? : A Feminist Critique Of The Social Construction Of Retirement, Pamela Weatherill Jan 1994

Do Women Retire? : A Feminist Critique Of The Social Construction Of Retirement, Pamela Weatherill

Theses : Honours

This research comes as a response to the paucity of discussion on women's experience of retirement. In consideration of the relationship between work and retirement, this study examines what a feminist perspective on women's experience of work can contribute to the androcentric conception of retirement. Women's experience of work is shaped by many forces, most particularly by the ideology of motherhood and the sexual division of labour. Together, these factors have ensured that women and men experience both paid and unpaid work in quantitatively and qualitatively different manners. While the construction of retirement has been around the largely male experience …

A Study Of Children's Drawing Types And Factors Influencing Choice Of Subject Matter, Stella Clark

The Marginalisation Of Women: Factors Affecting The Discontinuance Of The Careers Of Female Police Officers, Vicki Wilkinson Jan 1994

The Marginalisation Of Women: Factors Affecting The Discontinuance Of The Careers Of Female Police Officers, Vicki Wilkinson

Theses : Honours

Women have participated in policing in Western Australia for seventy five years. The first two women were employed as “Police Matrons” in roles which were restricted to what were thought to be the “feminine” tasks of dealing with female offenders, families and wayward youth, and providing clerical support to male officers. By 1941 there was a total of 3 women police in Western Australia and by 1960 their numbers had grown to twelve, however their role had changed little since 1917 and they were still seen as having limited function. By 1975 pressure had grown, not only within the police …

Domestic Space And The Construction Of Identity, Kerry Faulkner Jan 1994

Domestic Space And The Construction Of Identity, Kerry Faulkner

Theses : Honours

This thesis on Domestic Space and the Construction of Identity investigates the construction of feminine identity within the domestic journal. The devalued status of the homes magazine is a direct reflection of the devalued status of women's domestic work and its political insignificance in a patriarchal society which values external paid labour over unpaid domestic work. This work is of course central to society and homes magazines provide an important focus for research since they intersect with the construction of femininity and roles for women. The contradictory nature of the domestic journal is such that while it supports the hegemonic …

Mothers' Labour Force Participation Decisions And Child Care Provision In Australia, Gary Sherry Jan 1994

Mothers' Labour Force Participation Decisions And Child Care Provision In Australia, Gary Sherry

Theses : Honours

Public subsidisation of child care has increased steadily over it's 20 year history, corresponding with increases in the rate of labour force participation of mothers. This research seeks to determine if labour force participation is driven by provision of child care or if the supply of child care is driven by demand of Mothers participating in the labour force. Much of the Australian research of mothers' labour force participation does not take account for the provision or use of child care, yet all find the presence of children in the family as having a major impact on the labour force …

A Comparative Analysis Of Perceptions Of Land Between Environmentalists And Aboriginal Peoples, Rowan Greenlees Jan 1994

A Comparative Analysis Of Perceptions Of Land Between Environmentalists And Aboriginal Peoples, Rowan Greenlees

Theses : Honours

"We believe the same thing, regarding land, as the Aboriginals." This thesis has been undertaken to investigate the above statement, which I have frequently heard from environmentalists in informal conversation with them. To investigate this statement requires an analysis of all its possible meanings and underlying assumptions, and a comparison with the beliefs and perceptions regarding land that Aboriginal peoples uphold. Emphasis has been given to the word "same", as the understandings of this: word will indicate how this statement needs to be qualified. As a person who has interests in both environmental issues and those that concern indigenous people, …

Intercountry Adoptive Families In Western Australia: The Well-Being Of Their Four To Sixteen-Year-Old Adoptees, Trudy Rosenwald Jan 1994

Intercountry Adoptive Families In Western Australia: The Well-Being Of Their Four To Sixteen-Year-Old Adoptees, Trudy Rosenwald

Theses : Honours

The study investigated the well-being of 283 four to sixteen-year-old intercountry adopted (ICA) children in general and in relation to two specific adoption variables. The sample represented 80% of the estimated 4-16 year old ICA population of Western Australia (W A). Well-being was defined in terms of competence, happiness, health and problem behaviours. The primary source of information was Achenbach's parent reported Child Behavior Check List (CBCL) as used by the Western Australian Child Health Survey (WACHS). Bowlby's attachment theory provided the theoretical framework for the prediction that adoption after the age of 6 months, and the experience of adversity …

Unemployment And Training Reform: A Critical Analysis Of Australian Federal Government Policy 1983 To 1993, S. J. Bark Jan 1994

Unemployment And Training Reform: A Critical Analysis Of Australian Federal Government Policy 1983 To 1993, S. J. Bark

Theses : Honours

Unemployment levels in Australia are a problem that have confronted governments since the mid-1970's. Since the 1983 election, Labor Government policy has sought to combat unemployment by linking training reform within the parameters of economic restructuring. This thesis argues from a critical perspective that Australian Labor Government unemployment and training reform policies aim to develop people's economic potential rather than their personal potential. To this end, six policy documents form the basis of the analysis. There are four Reports (Australia Reconstructed, 'Finn', 'Carmichael' and 'Mayer'), one Policy Statement (One Nation), and one Discussion Paper ('The Employment Green Paper'). The thesis …
