"Diversity Statements In Collection Development Policies In Libraries At Cccu Institutions: Applying Antiracism And Critical Theory To Academic Library Policies", Robin D. Lang Dec 2022

"Diversity Statements In Collection Development Policies In Libraries At Cccu Institutions: Applying Antiracism And Critical Theory To Academic Library Policies", Robin D. Lang

The Christian Librarian

The Council of Christian College and Universities (CCCU) has made diversity a major focus of the organization, but commitment to diversity among individual CCCU institutions and within their departments, such as academic libraries, varies. Diversity is a core value of the library profession and complements the CCCU’s commitment to diversity, yet despite this convergence of interests, a review of the literature indicates that nothing has been written about diversity initiatives within academic libraries at CCCU institutions. This study was devised to begin to fill this gap in the literature and, thus, starts to investigate racial diversity within Christian higher education …

"Becoming A More Confident Librarian: Practical And Spiritual Steps For Battling Imposter Phenomenon", Savannah Patterson, Ruth Slagle, Amber Wessies

The Christian Librarian

New librarians often feel as though they have something to prove. This desire can lead to feelings of inadequacy and failure in the workplace that manifest as anxiety and fear. The idea that someone is a fraud or only succeeding by luck is called Imposter Phenomenon or Imposter Syndrome. As early career instruction librarians, the authors set out to find tools for dealing with their Imposter Phenomenon. This paper outlines faith-based tools like exercise, counseling, and prayer for managing Imposter Phenomenon. Practical tools such as professional development, mentoring, and communities of practice are explained as solutions for lessening the effects …

A Case Study On A Library Classification’S Effect On Library Student Workers’ Perception On Library Work, Alyssa G. Sultanik

The Christian Librarian

While there are studies and resources about training and retaining student workers in an academic library, there is little research on whether the library’s collection classification can have an effect on library student workers’ perception on their work and job fulfillment. While employed at the West Coast Baptist College (WCBC) Library, library student workers developed opinions on library work in general as well as their perception on both the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) while the library converted from the former to the latter. The case study found that seventy-five percent of the participating …

Incarnational Librarians: Liaisons Moving Into The Neighborhood, Ellen Hampton Filgo Aug 2022

Incarnational Librarians: Liaisons Moving Into The Neighborhood, Ellen Hampton Filgo

The Christian Librarian

The concept of “incarnational ministry,” which is often taught in cross-cultural ministry or missions training, offers practical value to academic liaison librarianship, namely: getting out of the library and going to where the users are, being a life-long learner, and modeling humility during interactions with patrons.

In 2015, West Coast Baptist College purchased an 80,000 volume library collection from a closing Bible institution. During 2017-2020, both the original 40,000 volume collection and purchased 80,000 volume collection were merged, relocated to a larger facility, thoroughly weeded into a 60,000 volume collection, and converted from Dewey Decimal Classification into the Library of Congress Classification. But I was an English major as an undergrad. What do I know about biblical theology resources? If this type of thought has crossed your mind, you are not alone! No one can know everything about every academic discipline. There are people who know, however, who can help us develop a more complete library collection. But guess what?
