Double-Edged Sword: Russia’S Use Of Energy As Leverage In The Near Abroad, Alexander M. Visotzky
Double-Edged Sword: Russia’S Use Of Energy As Leverage In The Near Abroad, Alexander M. Visotzky
Honors Papers
This work explores Russia’s use of energy as leverage in the near abroad. This work argues that different strategies of using energy, such as moderation or aggression, lead to different outcomes in the near abroad. The current work on Russian foreign policy fails to provide an explanation for the wildly different outcomes of Georgia and Ukraine – this work seeks to fill in those gaps.
The Language Of Nation: Multiculturalism, Nationalism And Language Policy In The United States And Canada, Laura Blum-Smith
The Language Of Nation: Multiculturalism, Nationalism And Language Policy In The United States And Canada, Laura Blum-Smith
Honors Papers
This thesis will examine the ways in which the national character of these two countries interacts with their histories of immigration and settlement. It will also examine the histories of language policy and debate in the two countries. I consider histories of immigration, nationalism, and language policy for each country, beginning with the United States and then Canada, and then examine the interaction between these factors within each nation. Finally, I compare and contrast the experiences of the US and Canada, examining their similarities and differences with respect to their experiences of the interplay between immigration, nationalism, and language. Increasing The Efficiency And Efficacy Of The War On Drugs: Utilizing The Stride Database To Analyze Cocaine Seizures, Benjamin Armand Greenberg Klebanoff
Honors Papers
This paper analyzes the structure of the illicit cocaine market, and develops a theoretical model analyzing cocaine seizures made by the Drug Enforcement Agency inside the United States. I would like to thank Professor Jonathan Lipow for inspiring me to take on this particular research topic. Professors Barbara Craig, Hirshel Kasper, and Alberto Ortiz also provided needed guidance and assistance as I undertook this project. Special thanks also to Professor Luis Fernandez for chairing the honors seminar meetings, and Congressman John Hall and his staff for working with me to secure data. Most importantly, I would like to recognize my …
Trade Unions And Green Jobs In The Post-Fordist Economy: Just Rhetoric Or A Fundamental Shift?, Erik Kojola
Trade Unions And Green Jobs In The Post-Fordist Economy: Just Rhetoric Or A Fundamental Shift?, Erik Kojola
Honors Papers
This paper looks at green jobs within the context of the new economy and post-Fordism, with a focus on why unions are supporting green jobs and the potential for creating decent employment and unionized jobs in green industries. The simultaneous economic and environmental crises create a window for political and economic change. The direction of green jobs will be determined by larger economic and political trends and will depend on the action of the state and organized labor. Unions are supporting green jobs because it is a way to promote reindustrialization, an active government industrial policy, corporatism and social partnerships. …

An Analysis Of Education Subsidy In The Presence Of Fertility Decisions, Human Capital Accumulation, And Spillovers, Woan Foong Wong
An Analysis Of Education Subsidy In The Presence Of Fertility Decisions, Human Capital Accumulation, And Spillovers, Woan Foong Wong
Honors Papers
The paper hypothesizes that the level of aggregate human capital in an economy affects the overall returns of an individual's human capital accumulation and fertility decision. However, the positive externalities from aggregate human capital are not internalized by households in their investment decisions. Using an overlapping-generations model, specify the household’s optimization problem in a rural developing country where parents have an old-age support motive that underlies the benefits of having and educating children. The optimal decision of parents is then contrasted with that of the social planner. They differ in that the social planner internalizes the externalities of aggregate human …
A Baseline Greenhouse Gas Inventory For Oberlin: Stepping Up To The Challenge Of Climate Neutrality, Nathaniel Flaschner Meyer
A Baseline Greenhouse Gas Inventory For Oberlin: Stepping Up To The Challenge Of Climate Neutrality, Nathaniel Flaschner Meyer
Honors Papers
The City of Oberlin joined the International Council for Leadership in Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) in 2007, committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through ICLEI's five-milestone process. As the first official step in this process, I conducted greenhouse gas inventories for the years 2001 and 2007 for community-wide and municipal operations emissions. I found that the community emitted 174,400 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2007, more than half of which was associated with the consumption of coal-intensive electricity. This amounts to 20.9 tons CO2e per resident annually. Of the community's overall emissions, the commercial sector, including all Oberlin College properties, …
