Italian Australian Studies: A (Post)Colonial Perspective, Gerry Turcotte, Gaetano Rando Dec 2007

Italian Australian Studies: A (Post)Colonial Perspective, Gerry Turcotte, Gaetano Rando

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

This chapter introduces the volume and discusses related theoretical issues. This volume seeks to map an understanding of the Italian experience onto the broader picture of diasporic stories, though with an anchor in the Australian-Italian experience. It brings together key essays and testimonials that frame a picture of Italy’s rich legacy at “home”, in Europe more widely, and in the (post)colonial sphere, with a particular emphasis on the Australian experience. The essays collected here focus on the way an Italian Australian story has emerged and evolved in its own unique way. In some respects it might be possible to defi …

The field of Italian Australian studies is both diverse and dynamic. It has embraced topics from outside its “traditional” ambit and has identified new areas of concern to scholars in the field. This volume examines from a post-colonial perspective one of the many and varied cultural practices — the creation of literary texts — established by migrants from Sicily and Calabria who constitute the two major Italian regional groups in Australia. In re-creating aspects of their inhabited past in their new frontier thereby lessening the threat of loss and reconciling their past with their present, these migrants have created a …

Cronotopi Del Paese Natio E Di Quello D’Adozione Nella Poesia E La Narrativa Calabroaustraliana, Gitano Rando Dec 2007

Cronotopi Del Paese Natio E Di Quello D’Adozione Nella Poesia E La Narrativa Calabroaustraliana, Gitano Rando

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

L’Organisation Au Service Des Droits Des Travailleurs Migrants: Le Militantisme Transnational À Singapour Et En Malaisie, Lenore T. Lyons

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Indonesian Muslim Masculinities In Australia, P. Nilan, Mike Donaldson, R. Howson Sep 2007

Indonesian Muslim Masculinities In Australia, P. Nilan, Mike Donaldson, R. Howson

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

This article is an inquiry into evolving forms of masculinity in Indonesia. It refers to data collected during a pilot project on the construction of Indonesian Muslim masculinities in Australia when Indonesian men arrive and encounter Anglo-Australian men. Using the technique of asking the Indonesian interviewees to comment on ‘Australian’ men allowed analysis of what the Indonesian men thought about their own cultural tropes of masculinity. It emerged that their gender construction coalesced around two important cultural nodes of discourse about how to be a ‘man’: firstly, the Indonesian urban interpretation of global ‘hypermasculinity’; and secondly, the moral role of …

Keywords To War: Reviving Language In An Age Of Terror, Mary Zournazi Aug 2007

Keywords To War: Reviving Language In An Age Of Terror, Mary Zournazi

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Russian playwright Anton Chekhov once noted that there are two types of political freedom: one is freedom from violence, the other is freedom from lies. These freedoms have become the site of a modern conundrum, echoes of which can be heard today in the ways language is caught within spiralling cycles of violence and lies that serve to alienate us from ourselves and others. It is also evident in the political attitudes towards freedom and justice that have surfaced in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks and been fed by a climate of fearful and terrorising politics. Within …

From Bicycles To Mercedes. Italians In Rural Nsw And Political Choice: Griffith 1947-1984, James Hagan

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

There were a few Italians in Griffith when the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area Scheme began in 1913, but they did not arrive in large numbers until after the Second World War. They joined over a thousand people of Italian birth or direct descent who had succeeded at small-scale farming and displaced the majority of Australians who had been the original block-holders. This produced some resentment and discrimination, which led to Italians setting up their own economic and social networks. They did not however act as a single community ; fundamental divisions between Northern and Southern immigrants remained and persisted, and so …

Liminarietà E Temporalità Nelle Interpretazioni Cinematografiche Della Diaspora Italoaustraliana Di Giorgio Mangiamele, Gaetano Rando

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

The Conference at Bivongi followed on others that had raised some serious questions about the Italian diaspora that occurred after the Second World War. We asked contributors to submit papers in three broad divisions, the first relating to the migrants' experience before departure, the second to experience in the host country, and the third to the cinematographic and literary interpretation of that experience. The papers contributed that successfully completed the peer review process are arranged in that sequence in this book.

Gramsci And Class, Mike Donaldson May 2007

Gramsci And Class, Mike Donaldson

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Some of the scholars who use the work of Antonio Gramsci, particularly those influenced by Cultural Studies, hold the view that Gramsci rejected the idea of social class, particularly in his Prison Notebooks. This paper traces the evolution of Gramsci's thinking on class and demonstrates that there is no sharp break between Gramsci's pre-prison and prison writings, and that social class remained fundamental to Gramsci's thinking until the end.

Making The Most Of What You’Ve Got: Sex Work And Class Mobility In The Riau Islands, M Ford, Lenore T. Lyons May 2007

Making The Most Of What You’Ve Got: Sex Work And Class Mobility In The Riau Islands, M Ford, Lenore T. Lyons

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

The islands of Batam, Bintan and Karimun on the Indonesian border with Singapore and Malaysia have an extensive sex industry which caters predominantly to foreign visitors. This paper explores the place of ‘sex as work’ for women involved in the industry and the opportunities for class mobility that sex work may present to them. We argue that these opportunities are the product of the Riau Islands’ particular spatiality, including a geographical proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, and a pattern of migration which has seen large numbers of temporary and long-term transmigrants from throughout the archipelago moving in and out of …

Where Internal And International Migration Intersect: Mobility And The Formation Of Multi-Ethnic Communities In The Riau Islands Transit Zone, Lenore T. Lyons, M. Ford Apr 2007

Where Internal And International Migration Intersect: Mobility And The Formation Of Multi-Ethnic Communities In The Riau Islands Transit Zone, Lenore T. Lyons, M. Ford

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

While migration studies scholars have paid considerable attention to internal migration within Indonesia, as well as to international labour migration flows from Indonesia, they have rarely considered the intersections between these two processes. This article addresses this gap through a close analysis of migration flows in one of Indonesia’s key transit areas – the Riau Islands. We argue that in the borderlands the processes of internal and international migration are mutually constitutive. The Riau Islands’ status as a transit zone for international labour migrants and as a destination for internal migrants determines its demographic profile and policies of migration control. …

Dignity Overdue: Women’S Rights Activism In Support Of Foreign Domestic Workers In Singapore, Lenore T. Lyons Apr 2007

Dignity Overdue: Women’S Rights Activism In Support Of Foreign Domestic Workers In Singapore, Lenore T. Lyons

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

The forces of globalisation increasingly compel feminist activists to engage internationally, either through their involvement in transnational networks and social movements, or by incorporating understandings of the ‘global’ into local and national activist practices. However, as differently situated actors with diverse agendas and priorities come together to address women’s rights within a transnational frame they face a range of challenges and contradictions. Rather than simply transcending the ‘national’, transnational feminist activists must pay particular attention to the roles played by nation-states and national governments in mediating the relationship between local and transnational groups. Amongst the issues they must consider are …

The Eight Hour Day And The Holy Spirit, Rowan Cahill Mar 2007

The Eight Hour Day And The Holy Spirit, Rowan Cahill

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

In Australia during the 1850s skilled workers in Sydney and Melbourne generally worked a 58 hour week; 10 hours per day Monday to Friday with 8 hours on Saturday. For other workers it was longer; shop assistants, for example, worked between 12-14 hours per day. Child labour was not uncommon; in 1876 in New South Wales, for example, the NSW Coal Mines Act was passed to limit the working week for boys aged 13-18 years to 50.5 hours per week and ban the employment of girls or boys in mines under the age of 13. The idea that working people …

The International Yaoi Boys’ Love Fandom And The Regulation Of Virtual Child Pornography: Current Legislation And Its Implications, Mark J. Mclelland, S. Yoo Mar 2007

The International Yaoi Boys’ Love Fandom And The Regulation Of Virtual Child Pornography: Current Legislation And Its Implications, Mark J. Mclelland, S. Yoo

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

This article looks at current international legislation regulating child pornography, particularly at the category of virtual child pornography, or purely fictional images and textual representations of young people defined as “minors”. Current legislation has been drafted with adult male pedophiles in mind in an attempt to stop harm to real children. However, the paper points out that the legislation also inadvertently criminalizes a large, predominantly female fandom of manga fans who use the Internet to participate in online fan clubs dedicated to a Japanese manga genre known as yaoi, which celebrates the love shared between fictional “beautiful boys.” It is …

Parleying Culture Against Trade: Hollywood’S Affairs With Korea’S Screen Quotas, Brian M. Yecies Mar 2007

Parleying Culture Against Trade: Hollywood’S Affairs With Korea’S Screen Quotas, Brian M. Yecies

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

The rising Korean cinema has inspired a flurry of new understandings of the nation’s media and cultural policies. However, there remains a gap in the historical factors leading to this phenomenon, regarding particularly Hollywood’s long-term negotiations with import and screen quotas. This study charts Hollywood’s export activities in Korea and analyzes differences between the US economic approach to film as ‘goods’ and Korean view of films as ‘cultural expressions’. The Korean government’s perseverance to safeguard film as cultural heritage and its ability to stand-up against relentless trade pressures from the US have led to the contemporary Korean cinema’s tangible success. …

Too Many, Too Late And The Adoption Alternative: Shame And Recent Abortion Debates, Rebecca Albury Jan 2007

Too Many, Too Late And The Adoption Alternative: Shame And Recent Abortion Debates, Rebecca Albury

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

A speech in Adelaide in March 2004 and the decisive vote about the regulation of RU486 provide significant marker events in the most recent Australian debate about abortion policy. In Australia abortion is both regulated by the States, most often through the criminal law, and funded through Medicare by the Australian government. A socially conservative campaign against abortion lead by Tony Abbott, Minister for Health was an attempt to intervene in the popular compromise which seems to both recognise the seriousness of abortion decisions and maintain accessibility; moving people holding views in the middle ground toward a position supporting a …

Hegemony And The Sixties: Observations, Polemics, Meanderings, Anthony Ashbolt Jan 2007

Hegemony And The Sixties: Observations, Polemics, Meanderings, Anthony Ashbolt

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

The concept of cultural hegemony and the 1960s are interconnected in important ways. First, it was in the 1960s that a keen interest in the concept developed. Second, the battle for cultural hegemony today takes place in the shadow of the sixties. The neoconservative agenda has been developed with reference to Vietnam and the liberation movements of the 1960s. The neoconservatives certainly saw sixties radicalism as a challenge to power and privilege. Ironically, some on the Left now beg to disagree and see the radical sixties, in particular the counterculture, as paving the way for a new phase of consumer …

Balancing Bias In The Media, Sharon Beder Jan 2007

Balancing Bias In The Media, Sharon Beder

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

The news is presented to give the impression it is factual, uncoloured by journalistic bias, so each side of a controversy is accurately reported. This paper outlines the way that the influence of editors, owners, advertisers – as well as journalistic conventions – are more important to the final result of journalism than the reporting skills or biases of individual journalists.

How Do We Get The Place Of Europe In World History Right?, Gregory C. Melleuish Jan 2007

How Do We Get The Place Of Europe In World History Right?, Gregory C. Melleuish

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

One of the great insults of the contemporary historical world is the term ‘Eurocentric’. It is invariably combined with notions of European imperialism and the supposed desire of Europe to dominate the world. In fact the term ‘Eurocentric’ can have a fairly innocuous meaning, denoting no more than the simple observation that the terminology and periodisation that we use to describe European history may not have any relevance when we are dealing with non- European civilisations. For example what does ‘pre-modern’ mean in a Chinese context where many of the features of European modernity have been present for over a …

Surveillant Institutional Eyes In South Korea: From Discipline To A Digital Grid Of Control, Kwang-Suk Lee Jan 2007

Surveillant Institutional Eyes In South Korea: From Discipline To A Digital Grid Of Control, Kwang-Suk Lee

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

This paper investigates the shift from disciplinary societies (the visible and physical violence of power) to control societies (the modulating and normalizing techniques of power) in South Korea. At the institutional level, during the period of repressive and disciplinary society in Korea (1948–1992), the regulatory control systems of the state were mainly performed by two formidable apparatuses: the national ID system and the National Security Law. On the other hand, the deployment of institutional power since 1993 has been based on the logic of free-floating control, dispersion, normalization, and modulation. The present study examines how the techniques of power were …

Truth, Truthfulness And Philosophy In Plato And Nietzsche, David I. Simpson Jan 2007

Truth, Truthfulness And Philosophy In Plato And Nietzsche, David I. Simpson

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Even those aware of Nietzsches ambivalent (rather than purely negative) attitude to Plato, tend to accept Nietzsches account of Plato and himself as occupying the poles of philosophy. Much that Nietzsche says supports this view, but we need not take him at his word. I consider Nietzsche and Plato on three planes: their view of truth, their view of philosophy, and their use of certain emblematic figures (the New Philosopher, the Philosopher King) as the bearers of philosophys future. On these planes Nietzsche and Plato can be seen to be remarkably close, and to stand together outside much of the …

Interview With Yvonne Johnson, Michael Jacklin Jan 2007

Interview With Yvonne Johnson, Michael Jacklin

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Yvonne Johnson, great-great granddaughter of Plains Cree chief Big Bear, is the co-author, along with Canadian writer Rudy Wiebe, of Stolen Life: Journey of a Cree Woman (1998). Their book tells of how Johnson came to be the only First Nations woman in Canada serving a ‘life twenty-five’ sentence for first degree murder. It also narrates Johnson’s experiences of repeated sexual abuse, inflicted on her by family members and strangers, beginning when she was two years old. As Johnson had been born with a cleft palate, she was unable to communicate to others her suffering and so the abuse continued …
