The integration of local community and Indigenous Knowledge in disaster planning and management has the potential to increase resilience in rural and Aboriginal communities across Ontario. This research incorporates findings from a literature review, and builds on the existing gaps within community-based participatory action research, through a case study of the 2012 Wawa-Michipicoten First Nation flooding event. Ten local citizen community participants from Wawa, Ontario and the Michipicoten First Nations were involved in a photovoice project to visually document their experiences and understandings of the flooding event. This research seeks to provide an explanation and evaluation of facilitated migration as an adaptation approach for improving the long-term resilience and sustainability of Acer saccharum (sugar maple) ecosystems and sugarbush production. The research concludes that faciliated migration is supported by producers and other industry stakeholders as a feasable adaptation approach for improving resilience and sustainability.

Sugar Bush Management In Ontario: Identification Of Resilient Adaptation Strategies For A Changing Climate, Kaitlin Richardson

The purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of human-facilitated silvicultural, biodiversity and genetic forest management in Ontario sugar bushes through a biogeographical lens to determine the social and ecological resilience to climate change impacts. Because sugar bushes are highly managed and therefore ecologically different than unmanaged sugar maple forests, a literature review combined with primary farm-level research will help to determine best management practices and adaptation decision-making to increase the resilience of these stands. The overarching conclusion is that maple syrup producers in Ontario need to entrench climate change objectives within forest management.

This research is concerned with developing a historical baseline of Canadian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal maple practices and the contribution of these activities to the well-being (WB) of communities up to approximately 1950. This research measures WB using two unique frameworks developed for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities associated with maple products and practices. In order to describe WB in historical contexts the research used archival data obtained primarily from Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and Early Canadiana Online (ECO). Through a sectorial profile, this study identifies the maple syrup value chain’s key players, processes, activities and inter-intra industry relationships (social capital) providing baseline data on the current status of the industry and an overall picture of the maple syrup value chain for members and new entrants.
