We present a system which applies text mining using computational linguistic techniques to automatically extract, categorize, disambiguate and filter metadata for image access. Candidate subject terms are identified through standard approaches; novel semantic categorization using machine learning and disambiguation using both WordNet and a domain specific thesaurus are applied. The resulting metadata can be manually edited by image catalogers or filtered by semi-automatic rules. We describe the implementation of this workbench created for, and evaluated by, image catalogers. We discuss the system's current functionality, developed under the Computational Linguistics for Metadata Building (CLiMB) research project. The CLiMB Toolkit has been …

Subject Access Tools In English For Canadian Topics: Canadian Extensions To U.S. Subject Access Tools, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

Canada has a long history of adapting United States subject access tools, including the Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), the Dewey Decimal Classification, and the Sears List of Subject Headings, to meet the specific needs of Canadians. This paper addresses the extensions to these American tools for English-speaking Canadians. While the United States and Canada have many similarities, differences exist that require changing terminology and providing greater depth and precision in subject headings and classification for specifically Canadian topics. The major effort has been for Library and Archives Canada (LAC) systematically to provide extensions …

This qualitative, ethnographic study explores the various tensions and struggles around racial identity that thirteen African American youth encounter while participating in a culturally responsive, library-based book club called Circle of Voices. Data were collected twice a week over four months in an after school community literacy intervention program in a public library and a university Black cultural library setting. Thematic analysis of the corpus of data and a micro ethnographic discourse analysis were performed on the data. Whiteness and double consciousness serve as complementary theoretical frameworks. Findings reveal that: a) tension is an integral component in helping African American …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Image Indexing: The Influence Of Domain Knowledge, Indexer Experience And Image Characteristics, Joan E. Beaudoin

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This study investigates the application of conceptual terms to images by individuals with various educational and occupational backgrounds. While the inherent complexities of applying terms to images are broadly acknowledged, few studies have addressed the issue of how subject expertise or practical image indexing experience may impact the work. This study begins work in this direction by examining the terms applied to a series of images by individuals with different levels of domain knowledge and practical indexing experience. In addition to the indexers’ varying backgrounds, the study examined how the images’ modes of representation and interpretation influenced the application of …
