En Sus Propias Palabras: Testimonios Of Latinas In Elected And Appointed Office, Andrea Guajardo
Theses & Dissertations
Governance in the United States has been the domain of men since the idea of democracy and independence from England was in its infancy. The systematic oppression and exclusion of persons of color and women was the backdrop upon which the United States was founded. Many continue to experience conflict and struggle in their efforts to gain and maintain civil rights and seek personal and professional experiences free from marginalization and oppression. This purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the lived experiences group of Latinas who have been elected or appointed to public office with an emphasis critical …
Officer Use Of Force: A Multicase Study Of Institutional Betrayal, Margarita Mcauliffe
Officer Use Of Force: A Multicase Study Of Institutional Betrayal, Margarita Mcauliffe
Theses & Dissertations
Law enforcement officers in the United States are authorized to utilize force (Alpert & MacDonald, 2001); however, the use of force can cause physical and emotional trauma to the person against whom it is used, and to the person’s loved ones (WHO, 2002; Bloom, 2012; APA, 2013). The needs and rights of traumatized individuals must be addressed for healing to occur (U.S. DOJ, 2013). It was not known if the needs and rights of the survivors of officer use of force were being met. Filling a gap in the literature, this exploratory multicase study investigated 5 use-of-force incidents with demographically …
Investigating The Effectiveness Of A Community Leadership Program Based On The Experiences And Perceptions Of Alumni Participants, Sandi Wolff
Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigated the perceptions of alumni who participated in a civic leadership program (LP) in a large, metropolitan city with over 1.7 million residents in its local community. The program, with a 42 year-long history, had no formal data on its participants, the program, or its efficacy. The research investigated the expectations, experience, and engagement of participants over its 42-year history. To examine these concepts, the study was motivated by three research questions: (1) What is the relationship between the participants’ program satisfaction and the program elements? (2) To what extent did the program meet expectations, based on participant …
The Initial Planning Process Of An International Service-Learning Pilot Initiative Under Development, Denise P. Krohn
The Initial Planning Process Of An International Service-Learning Pilot Initiative Under Development, Denise P. Krohn
Theses & Dissertations
This research explored the initial planning process of an international service-learning (ISL) initiative under development that involved a collaboration among a south-central Texas private university, a ministry of Catholic Sisters in Peru, a U.S. non-profit organization, and a Peruvian optometry school. Three collaborators were founded by the same religious order. An overlapping in mission and values influenced the context. By delving into the expectations of higher education and its pedagogical practices, ISL’s history and conceptualizations, and concepts of program planning and designing related to the fields of ISL and adult learning, this study presented significant program development aspects. Furthermore, the …
The Closing Of Inner-City Catholic Elementary Schools And The Impact On Community: An Ethnographic Instrumental Case Study Of Two Neighboring Communities, Ana Maria De La Portilla
The Closing Of Inner-City Catholic Elementary Schools And The Impact On Community: An Ethnographic Instrumental Case Study Of Two Neighboring Communities, Ana Maria De La Portilla
Theses & Dissertations
The focus of this ethnographic instrumental case study is to communicate the seriousness of a growing trend in the United States: closings of inner-city/urban Catholic schools by the local diocese. Utilizing Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice (1977) and the Church’s Catholic Social Teaching, this study examined the question: What does it mean for the parish community and the church, as a whole, when the Catholic school that was once a big part of community life is no longer there? This research study examined community members’ role(s), response to, and experience of a closing; examined the implications on person-community-Church relationship; and …
Child-Headed Households In Rural Zimbabwe: Perceptions Of Shona Orphaned Children, Eucharia Gomba
Child-Headed Households In Rural Zimbabwe: Perceptions Of Shona Orphaned Children, Eucharia Gomba
Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative ethnographic case study explored the phenomenon of Child- Headed Households (CHHs) in rural Zimbabwe from the perspectives of a Shona community. My intention was to gain an understanding on how these children access necessities like food, clothing, shelter, education, health care, and cope on a daily basis without parental care, or adult supervision. The perceptions of both the orphaned children and the adults in their community were investigated through the integrative lens of the Shona philosophy of unhu, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and Bronfenbrenner’s ideas of systems. The findings of this study show that children from child-headed …
The Arrival Of Generation Z On College Campuses, Nicole Trevino
The Arrival Of Generation Z On College Campuses, Nicole Trevino
Theses & Dissertations
Research Focus
The purpose of the study was to understand the academic needs, desires, and expectations of Generation Z in relation to their college experience as perceived by educational professionals. Colleges and universities may experience diminishing enrollment and possible closures if college administrators fail to address the needs and expectations of Generation Z students. Generation Z is entering college with a set of different expectations from their predecessors and it will be important for university administrators to understand this generation in order to attract and retain them. Pearson (2013) encouraged university administrators to take the time to identify their market …
