Mayas, Spirituality, And The Unfinished History Of Conflict In Guatemala [Los Mayas, La Espiritualidad Y La Historia Incompleta Del Conflicto En Guatemala], Servando Z. Hinojosa

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Maya spiritual practice in Guatemala has been actively challenged by mainstream religions and by pressures originating from other institutions. Many Maya ritualists have been directly reproached by religious leaders and have been targeted by a state apparatus that associates rural Maya life with insurgency. As a result, many Maya spiritual elements have been pushed to, and kept at, the margins of society. Focusing on the past two decades, this essay reviews how Mayas nevertheless maintain an active ritual life. They do this by engaging in a close relationship with the spirit-owners of the landscape, beings upon whom humans depend for …

The Impact Of Chinese Purchases Of U.S. Government Debt On The Treasury Yield Curve, Radhames A. Lizardo, Andre V. Mollick Dec 2011

The Impact Of Chinese Purchases Of U.S. Government Debt On The Treasury Yield Curve, Radhames A. Lizardo, Andre V. Mollick

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

Examining monthly data from May of 1985 to May of 2008, we find that increases in Chinese purchases of U.S government debt lead to decreases in Treasury yields. The effect is stronger as the maturity increases: a one percent increase in purchases of U.S. Treasuries by Chinese investors lowers the two-year (ten-year) Treasury yield by 10 to 38 basis points (39 to 55 basis points) on average, ceteris paribus . Overall, the demand-side variable capturing Chinese purchases of U.S. Treasuries improves the cointegrating properties of U.S. interest rates. In-sample and out-of-sample forecasts reinforce that the model with Chinese purchases greatly …

The Effects Of Physical Activity On Self-Injurious Behavior, Lynnette D. Aguilar Dec 2011

The Effects Of Physical Activity On Self-Injurious Behavior, Lynnette D. Aguilar

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Auto-mutilation is a maladaptive coping mechanism and a major problem confronting behavioral medicine with no known treatment to date to place the behavior on complete extinction. The purpose of this experiment is to examine the possible beneficial effects of running relative to caffeine-induced SIB. Female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 4) served as subjects with each having a different extended baseline and treatment condition. Visual analysis of a multiple baseline graph did not support the hypothesis that as treatment (physical activity) was implemented SIB would decrease. It was found that subjects who drank more caffeinated water had higher amounts of …

Exposure To Cloudburst In Leh: Post Tramautic Stress Disorder And Associated Factors, Ruby Charak, Lundup Spalzes

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Disasters of any nature whether man made or due to nature's fury are well known to cause a variety of psychological sequelae. One such natural disaster took place in August 2010 in Leh, when cloudburst triggering torrential rains, flash floods and mud slides struck Leh town of Ladakh causing massive destruction to flora and fauna. The present study aims to gauge the effect of number of trauma events previously faced by an individual, positive affect, negative affect and social support on Post Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD) among 98 (48 female & 50 male) residents of Leh who were exposed to …

Enriched Vs Impoverished Housing: Food Choice And Consumption, Berenice Martinez Dec 2011

Enriched Vs Impoverished Housing: Food Choice And Consumption, Berenice Martinez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study focused on the relationship between environmental setting, eating choices and food intake. Ten Swiss Webster female subjects were socially housed under impoverished environmental conditions and ten under enriched housing conditions. Subjects were exposed to a nutritious food and sweet fat-laden food diet together with ad lib access to regular tap water on a 12 h light and dark cycle for four weeks. Results showed that an impoverished environment does not lead to an increase in body weight (t(6)= 0.293, p > .05) and environmental manipulations do not delineate a preference for diet type (t(6)= .877, p >.05). Further research …

Are Progressive Ratio And Fixed Interval Schedules Of Reinforcement Related Measures Of Impulsivity?, Christine Guiterrez Dec 2011

Are Progressive Ratio And Fixed Interval Schedules Of Reinforcement Related Measures Of Impulsivity?, Christine Guiterrez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The area of impulsivity is widely studied among many different professional fields. However, given the broad brush that has been used to paint the construct of impulsivity, it’s apparent that there is no true agreement on a definitive definition. In the present study, a purely behavioral procedure was tested with 10 female Sprague-Dawley rats who were placed on a progressive ratio and then a fixed interval 20 s schedule of reinforcement to see if these two schedules were related measures of impulsivity. The definition of impulsivity used in this study was relative to the performance of all animals in that …

Does Responding On Progressive Ratio Schedule Of Reinforcement Vary As A Function Of Phase In Estrous Cycle?, Armandina M. Sanchez Dec 2011

Does Responding On Progressive Ratio Schedule Of Reinforcement Vary As A Function Of Phase In Estrous Cycle?, Armandina M. Sanchez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual and estrous cycle have been found to influence a variety of behavioral and physical responses in humans and animals, respectively. Impulsive behavior has been associated with the luteal phase of the cycle. Progressive ratio schedule of reinforcement has been widely used to assess the strength of reinforcers. In the present study, a comparison was made between the rate of motor activity, lever pressing, of early and late estrous groups. Differences between the groups were not statistically significant. Further analysis explored subjects individually. Visual examination of the data reveal extreme variability in responding, which coupled with …

The Use Of Debit Cards In Promoting On-Time Payment Behavior In A Daycare Center In The Rio Grande Valley Region Of Texas, Ruben James Nieto

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The study investigates the inappropriate payment behavior of consumers at a local daycare in the Rio Grande Valley. An AB, baseline and intervention, single subject design was used to increase the on-time payment behavior of consumers paying on time at the daycare. Baseline data was taken for 14 weeks before the intervention was implemented. The intervention consisted of an alternative payment method, accepting credit and debit cards, [as an antecedent, to the consumer in order to receive payments on time]. This alternative payment method showed that on-time payment behavior increased compared to pre-intervention.

Framing Social News Sites: An Analysis Of The Top Ranked Stories On Reddit And Digg., Ben S. Wasike

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Social media sites in general are gaining more and more prominence. However, not as much attention has been paid to social news sites like Reddit and Digg, which allow users to re-publish and vote on the news articles they deem fit for their own consumption. This study used media framing as a theoretical guide to examine the nature of the top-ranked articles posted on Reddit and Digg. Content analysis was used to determine the generic and issue-specific frames common in the said articles (n = 454). Additionally, the study sought to determine the most debated frames on the two sites. …

The Effects Of Teacher Nonverbal Immediacy And Teacher Confirmation On The Affective Learning Of Students With Special Needs, Jacquelyn R. Rex

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study investigated the effect of teacher nonverbal immediacy and teacher confirmation on the perceived affective learning of students with special needs. A 2 × 2 factorial design was utilized, with teacher nonverbal immediacy and teacher confirmation as independent variables. Two research questions asked whether students with special needs could accurately rate the immediacy and confirmation levels of teachers when exposed to manipulated stimuli. H1 and H2 predicted that nonverbal immediacy and confirmation, respectively, would positively influence the affective learning of special needs students. H3 predicted that special needs students would report greater levels of affective learning when exposed to …

The Culturally Adapted Public Administrator: How Accredited Mpa Programs Are Preparing Administrators With Cultural Competency, Nicholas Weimer

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the extent to which National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) accredited Public Administration terminal professional degree programs address cultural competency in their curriculum, the amount of institutional diversity of these programs, and the relations among these quantities. The sample includes 74 university self-study reports. Cultural competency is the dependent variable of this study and syllabi/abstracts of courses taught constitute the major explanatory variable. Descriptive analysis reveals that 15.4% of the total courses in the sample address elements of cultural competency. The use of frequency statistics further reveal that …

Does Inflation Targeting Matter For Output Growth? Evidence From Industrial And Emerging Economies, Andre V. Mollick, Rene Cabral, Francisco G. Carneiro Jul 2011

Does Inflation Targeting Matter For Output Growth? Evidence From Industrial And Emerging Economies, Andre V. Mollick, Rene Cabral, Francisco G. Carneiro

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines the effects of inflation targeting on industrial and emerging economies’ output growth over the “globalization years” of 1986-2004. Controlling for trade openness and two indicators of financial globalization, the authors find systematic positive and significant effects of inflation targeting on real output growth. In dynamic models, the findings show strong output persistence in industrial economies, in which partial and full inflation targeting regimes have a positive long-run impact on growth. In emerging markets, only full inflation targeting policies have any output effect in the long-run. The results suggest that strict inflation targeting is needed to make the …

Déficit De Atención E Hiperactividad En Los Trastornos Del Espectro Autista [Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder In Autism Spectrum Disorders], Cecilia Montiel-Nava, Joaquín A. Peña Jun 2011

Déficit De Atención E Hiperactividad En Los Trastornos Del Espectro Autista [Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder In Autism Spectrum Disorders], Cecilia Montiel-Nava, Joaquín A. Peña

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

According to the DSM-IV-TR, symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity are frequent in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This statement is supported by clinical observation and formal assessment. However, ASD diagnosis is still among the exclusion criteria for the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Such exclusion generates controversy and questions regarding the need and benefits of maintaining or not these separations; so much so, that the proposed criteria for the DSM-V eliminate that exclusion condition. It is necessary a better understanding of the comorbidity between both entities in order to be able to have an appropriate sequence of the intervention goals. For …

Turnover Intent, Organizational Commitment, And Job Satisfaction: An Assessment Of Municipal Police Departments Within Hidalgo County, Texas, Joel Rivera May 2011

Turnover Intent, Organizational Commitment, And Job Satisfaction: An Assessment Of Municipal Police Departments Within Hidalgo County, Texas, Joel Rivera

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

There is a paucity of research on turnover intent among police officers, particularly municipal police officers. This study examines the importance of turnover intent as it relates to job satisfaction and organizational commitment for municipal police departments within Hidalgo County, Texas. This research is important because attrition costs are among the largest expenses that municipal police agencies incur, and mitigation of that loss may benefit the municipal police agencies during times of financial hardships. This study found organizational commitment to be a predictor of turnover intent.

Access To Healthcare For “Undocumented Citizens” In The Rio Grande Valley, Milena A. Melo May 2011

Access To Healthcare For “Undocumented Citizens” In The Rio Grande Valley, Milena A. Melo

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The argument this research paper attempts to establish is that undocumented citizens have very little access to healthcare free from barriers that the United States government and healthcare facilities impose on them. The purpose of this thesis was to discover barriers that undocumented citizens encounter when accessing healthcare. Structured interviews were conducted with healthcare providers, administrators, and undocumented citizens in the Rio Grande Valley. Finances were determined by all interviewees to be the largest barrier to accessing healthcare. This issue requires further research and quantitative studies into a topic in healthcare that is scarcely studied and that needs immediate attention …

“To Reveal Or Not To Reveal”?: A Comparison Of Hispanic Daughters' Openness Toward Mothers & Risky Behavior As A Function Of Father-Involvement, Cynthia A. Chavez May 2011

“To Reveal Or Not To Reveal”?: A Comparison Of Hispanic Daughters' Openness Toward Mothers & Risky Behavior As A Function Of Father-Involvement, Cynthia A. Chavez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Using Communication Privacy Management Theory as a framework, this study examined the relationship between father-involvement, daughter-mother openness, and risky behavior. All participants were given a questionnaire that measured their openness toward their mother, perceived/desired father involvement, and their risk behavior. The questionnaire addressed subject’s willingness to disclose information on specific topics (i.e. sex, pregnancy, contraception and drugs) that involve high risks when disclosed. This specificity of topics will serve as an aid to measure the extent or degree of openness that may exist within the daughter-mother relationship as a function of father-involvement and at risk behaviors. Predicted results are expected …

The purpose of this study was to further validate the Assessment of Pediatric Resuscitation Communication (APRC), by establishing the interrater reliability of the instrument. The aim was to determine if the APRC instrument can be used by trained coders from a range of disciplines to assess the communication effectiveness of trauma team members and leaders during pediatric trauma resuscitations. These scores will be used to determine if team and leader communication is correlated with medical performance during trauma resuscitations. The sample included 8 participants from diverse backgrounds. A calculation of the Percentage of Agreement (1996) of 4 pediatric resuscitations was …

‘Climate Change’ And Its Bearing On Violent Crimes In A Rio Grande Valley City In Texas, Vanessa Valdez May 2011

‘Climate Change’ And Its Bearing On Violent Crimes In A Rio Grande Valley City In Texas, Vanessa Valdez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Previous theories have attributed aggression to biological influences but this thesis will focus on the frustration-aggression hypothesis. If such a theory is relevant, weather may have an effect on violent crime. This study intends to answer whether a relationship between violence (specifically violent crime) and warm temperatures exists and what type of relationship exists. The study tests the hypothesis that warm temperatures will have a positive association with violent crime. Based on secondary data the Part I Index crimes (Violent) or murder rape, robbery, and aggravated assault were collapsed into two variables, ‘Violent’ which omitted robbery and ‘Violent 2’ which …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Anxiety Disorders In Youth, Laura D. Seligman, Thomas H. Ollendick Apr 2011

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Anxiety Disorders In Youth, Laura D. Seligman, Thomas H. Ollendick

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs) have been shown to be efficacious for the treatment of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. Randomized clinical trials indicate that approximately two-thirds of children treated with CBT will be free of their primary diagnosis at posttreatment. Although several CBT treatment packages have been investigated in youth with diverse anxiety disorders, common core components have been identified. A comprehensive assessment, development of a good therapeutic relationship and working alliance, cognitive restructuring, repeated exposure with reduction of avoidance behavior, and skills training comprise the core procedures for the treatment of anxiety disorders in youth.

You Think I Am Stupid? Face Needs In Intercultural Conflicts, Yanrong (Yvonne) Chang Mar 2011

You Think I Am Stupid? Face Needs In Intercultural Conflicts, Yanrong (Yvonne) Chang

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Embedded in intercultural conflicts are identity or face-based goal issues (Rothman, 1997), which, when not effectively managed, may lead to unresolved conflicts. This study examined actual email interactions over a period of five months between an American visiting professor and an International Office staff member at a University in China. It showed three patterns of interaction that failed to manage each other’s face or identity needs and led to unresolved conflicts, hurt feelings, and ruined intercultural relationships. It suggested principles or lessons for effectively handling intercultural conflicts.

Ethnic Context And Immigration Policy Preferences Among Latinos And Anglos, Rene R. Rocha, Thomas Longoria, Robert D. Wrinkle, Benjamin R. Knoll, Jerry L. Polinard, James Wenzel

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective. We examine how the immigration policy preferences of Anglos and Latinos vary according to ethnic context. Specifically, we hypothesize that immigration policy attitudes are a product of both Latino immigrant and Latino native born group size. In contrast to previous work, which found that Latinos and Anglos react to contextual forces in an identical manner, we argue that Latino group size produces opposite reactions for Anglos and Latinos.

Methods. These hypotheses are tested using an original state-wide survey of Anglos and Latinos in Texas conducted during 2006, which is supplemented with data from the 2000 Census.

Results. Our findings …

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the clinical, neuroimaging characteristics and positivity of the acquaporin water channel (NMO-IgG) in pediatric patients with neuromyelitis optica (NMO). This disorder could have a variable clinical expression. To address such variability, the term NMO spectrum has been suggested.

Method: We evaluated six pediatric patients, with a median age of 11 years at the time of the study, with the diagnosis of NMO by the Wingerchuck criteria.

Results: All the cases exhibited bilateral optic neuritis (ON). Four patients had abnormalities on brain MRI from the onset, although only three of them developed symptoms correlated to those lesions during …

Trait Anxiety And Trait Disgust In Spider Phobia, Laura Vernon, Michiyo Hirai Jan 2011

Trait Anxiety And Trait Disgust In Spider Phobia, Laura Vernon, Michiyo Hirai

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is evidence for the role of trait anxiety in the specific phobias, and spider phobia in particular. Recently, trait disgust has received attention in relation to specific phobia and researchers and theorists have begun to address its contributions to phobia etiology, maintenance, and treatment processes. There is now strong evidence that a trait or dispositional proneness to experience disgust is related to spider phobia. What is perhaps more important is emerging evidence that both trait anxiety and trait disgust may contribute to spider phobia severity independently of one another. However, the overall picture is far from clear and distinguishing …

The Impact Of Tarp Bailouts On Stock Market Volatility And Investor Fear, Daniel Huerta, Daniel Perez-Liston, Dave Jackson Jan 2011

The Impact Of Tarp Bailouts On Stock Market Volatility And Investor Fear, Daniel Huerta, Daniel Perez-Liston, Dave Jackson

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 was the response of the Federal government to the economic crisis of 2007-2009. Within this act, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) was the mechanism to attempt to stabilize the financial market through the injection of liquidity into troubled firms. This paper examines the effect of TARP bailouts on stock market volatility and investor fear. Using an event study methodology, we find evidence of a significant decrease in stock-market volatility on the day of bailouts, and the day after. Additionally, findings show that the VIX, a proxy of investor fear, significantly declines on …

Ritual Effigies And Corporeality In Kaqchikel Maya Soul Healing, Servando Z. Hinojosa Jan 2011

Ritual Effigies And Corporeality In Kaqchikel Maya Soul Healing, Servando Z. Hinojosa

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

To treat some cases of soul-loss, Kaqchikel Mayas use ritual effigies of the sufferer. These effigies, called k’al k’u’x, are made by wrapping the sufferer’s clothing around a wooden armature. For the effigy to be a viable ritual surrogate, the ritualist must douse it with water, heat it, and strike it during a soul-calling ceremony. This handling instantiates corporeality in the effigy by kindling normative body states in it, states that must be stimulated in the sufferer’s own body for it to spiritually reintegrate. Such Maya ritual substitution practices are how Kaqchikels deploy ritual surrogation processes that hinge on …
