Obscenity Standards In Canada And The United States: A Comparative Study In Constitutional Law, Ronald Edward Dean Dec 1974

Obscenity Standards In Canada And The United States: A Comparative Study In Constitutional Law, Ronald Edward Dean

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to study the comparative constitutional development of obscenity law in Canada and the United States. The research focuses on analysis of case law with particular emphasis of Supreme Court decisions in the two countries. Obscenity law is not static, but is, rather, an active and on-going area of constitutional law.

The central problem in the legal approach to obscenity has been the development of a definition. The original conceptualization of obscenity for both Canada and the United States came from an English decision in 1868, which dominated the field until the late 1950's. The …

The Value System As A Source Of Political Attitudes, William S. Maddox Dec 1974

The Value System As A Source Of Political Attitudes, William S. Maddox

Masters Theses

The field of political psychology focuses on specific political behavior as it relates to a total measure of the individual. This research effort chose as a possible summation of that totality the value system, defined as any individual's description of his total image of the world and the behavior which he prefers in dealing with that world. Within this perspective, political attitudes are the result of the expression of a broad and abstract value system with reference to a specific attitude object.

The research design utilized Q methodology to gather empirical descriptions of values systems toward a political issue, i.e., …

A Metrical Analysis Of The Morphological Relationship Between Prehistoric Dallas And Historic Cherokee Skeletal Populations In East Tennessee, Moira H. M. Wright

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to define and quantify the morphological relationship between prehistoric Dallas and historic Overhill Cherokee skeletal populations in east Tennessee in order to test two theories concerning Cherokee prehistory in the eastern Tennessee Valley. One theory states that the Cherokee did not arrive in the Valley until long after European contact; the other theory suggest that the Cherokee have possibly been occupying this area since as early as the Archaic period.

Methods of metrical analysis currently in use in physical anthropological research were used to test these two theories. The morphological distance between Dallas and …

Characteristics Of Graduate Student Instructors As Related To Students' Judgments Of Their Competence, Edwin Rice Barnett

Masters Theses

The present study seeks primarily to determine if there is a congruence between the perceived similarity of a student to his instructor and the student's judgment of the instructor's competence. To test this hypothesis, an Interpersonal Checklist, consisting of 160 adjectives, was devised and administered to two sets of 50 students during a period of six months. Three instructional sets were utilized with a five-point Likert response system in conjunction with the checklist. One instructional set asked the student to describe his instructor, another asked for a judgment of the extent to which the student thought himself similar to his …

Social Psychological And Hormonal Correlates Of Alcohol Consumption: A Psychobiological Study Of Social Behavior, Barry S. Tuchfeld

Doctoral Dissertations

Social psychological and the sparse hormonal literature are reviewed for possible commonalities with respect to alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems. Self-concept, social anxiety, cortisol, and testosterone are proposed as interrelated but additive predictors of alcohol consumption among males in a party-type social setting. The relationships were thought to be amplified for those persons with a self-reported history of excessive drinking.

Sixty-five male collegians from four organizations were invited to attend parties sponsored by the research co-directors. Pre- and post-drinking venipunctures were taken but the subjects were not told of the specific interest in the steroid hormones. Further, the subjects were …
