Keep Your Head Above Water: Management And Water Literacy In Italy, Rachel E. Huxhold Apr 2016

Keep Your Head Above Water: Management And Water Literacy In Italy, Rachel E. Huxhold

Black & Gold

According to the 2015 World Economic Forum, water is identified as the top economic concern moving forward (World Economic Forum, 2015). Through climate change, population growth, increased overall demand, and pollution, the availability of potable water is drastically changing—more severely in some areas than others at this point in time. In Italy, such factors have called attention to the importance of good water governance, as the country faces multiple water issues at once. In the north, climate change has contributed to rising sea levels and increased flooding, while the south faces water scarcity due to climate change and increased demand. …

Reawakening In Bundelkhand: Cultural Identity In Orchha And The Effects Of Tourism On Its Creation, Preservation, And Loss, Brenton David Kalinowski Apr 2016

Reawakening In Bundelkhand: Cultural Identity In Orchha And The Effects Of Tourism On Its Creation, Preservation, And Loss, Brenton David Kalinowski

Black & Gold

The purpose of this study is to explore the roots of the cultural identity of the Indian town of Orchha today, and with that context in place, to analyze the influence tourism has had in Orchha in the past twenty years. In particular, how tourism has created new cultural identity, how it has influenced a movement towards the preservation of cultural identity, but also how it has threatened loss of cultural identity. The research was conducted using a combined historical and ethnographic approach, using both archival research and ethnographic techniques. Throughout the study, and as this paper shows, the medieval …

Surrealism, Communism, And The Pursuit Of Revolution, Robin S. Klaus Apr 2016

Surrealism, Communism, And The Pursuit Of Revolution, Robin S. Klaus

Black & Gold

In January of 1927, five surrealist artists applied for membership to the French Communist Party (PCF) in a move that seemed contrary to their mission as surrealists.[1] Since the art movement’s founding manifesto in 1924, surrealism had pursued the visceral purity of fantasy and dreams under the leadership of André Breton. The political agenda of the PCF, on the other hand, sought social revolution informed by a Marxist political theory grounded in material reality. Although apparently contradictory, surrealism and communism actually stem from the same source; both are reactions to the misery of the human condition, and both seek …

Global Flows And The Globalization Of Nothing: Synthesizing The Incongruous, Elliott H. Valentine Apr 2015

Global Flows And The Globalization Of Nothing: Synthesizing The Incongruous, Elliott H. Valentine

Black & Gold

Increasingly pertinent in contemporary society, globalization is a force that promises to change the way people interact with others in almost all aspects of life. As scholars attempt to theorize about such situations, disparate perspectives about the dynamics and possibilities of globalization arise. In order to develop a more comprehensive theory of globalization, this piece engages the theory of global flows and the five “-scapes” as presented in Arjun Appadurai’s Modernity at Large (1996), as well as George Ritzer’s conception of the globalization of nothing as presented in The Globalization of Nothing 2 (2007). A rich synthesis of these two …

Second Treatise Of The Social Contract: A Comparative Analysis Of Locke And Rousseau, Benjamin B. Taylor Apr 2015

Second Treatise Of The Social Contract: A Comparative Analysis Of Locke And Rousseau, Benjamin B. Taylor

Black & Gold

Locke and Rousseau both emphasize the importance of consent with respect to government and use state of nature arguments to determine what principles would constitute a just society, but each of them comes to a radically different conclusion as to what such a society would look like. Much of this difference is rooted in their differing conceptions of what the purpose of government (and political society generally) is. This paper analyzes the differences between their justifications of government and between the political societies in which those differences result.

Helping A Microfinance Institution Select Its Clients: A Risk Analysis Using Social Networks, Sayantan Mitra, Varunavi Newar Apr 2015

Helping A Microfinance Institution Select Its Clients: A Risk Analysis Using Social Networks, Sayantan Mitra, Varunavi Newar

Black & Gold

This paper formulates an objective mathematical model for a Microfinance Institution (MFI) to measure the credit worthiness associated with a potential client. We use concepts from network theory to determine the credit worthiness of an individual in relation to other households in the community. We use the concept of eigenvector centrality to evaluate the relative credit worthiness in the network. The latter part of the model focuses on the absolute measures of credit worthiness such as income, ownership of assets and risk of the proposed investment. This model would help MFIs reduce the risk of borrowing by ensuring that there …

Let Our Voices Be Heard: A Comparative Analysis Of Indigenous Political Representation In Latin America, Latrice M. Burks Apr 2015

Let Our Voices Be Heard: A Comparative Analysis Of Indigenous Political Representation In Latin America, Latrice M. Burks

Black & Gold

Bolivia, Peru, and Mexico are three Latin American states with a vast number of similarities, including significant indigenous populations. However, despite the historical and cultural similarities of these states, Bolivia has sustainably more indigenous political representation in its government, compared to Peru and Mexico. Previous literature suggests that neoliberalism, civil society, and reserved seats/quotas are factors that can positively affect indigenous representation in politics. This comparative analysis tests these three contributory factors in an attempt to explain the political representation gaps between the three states. This study indicates that neoliberalism does positively increase indigenous political representation, but not in the …
