Policy Considerations Regarding The Integration Of Lusophone West African Immigrant Populations, Kezia Lartey, Brandon D. Lundy

Brandon D. Lundy

On January 23, 2012, Resolution No. 3 enacted the National Immigration Strategy for the island nation of Cabo Verde, the first of its kind in the country. As a buffer nation to Western Europe with a rapidly developing economy and good governance indicators, Cabo Verde is transitioning from a sending and transit country to a receiving nation for African mainlanders, especially from Guinea-Bissau. How effective are these immigration policies at managing these changing mobility patterns? Are immigrants successfully integrating into host communities? How might integration be handled more effectively? This policy briefing reports integration successes and failures from ethnographic research …

God Almighty Hisself: The Life And Legacy Of Dick Allen, Mitchell J. Nathanson Mar 2016

God Almighty Hisself: The Life And Legacy Of Dick Allen, Mitchell J. Nathanson

Mitchell J Nathanson

“What I saw…persuaded me that (he) was the victim of an innate and incurable disorder.  I might give alms to his body; but his body did not pain him; it was his soul that suffered, and his soul I could not reach.”
-- Herman Melville, “Bartleby The Scrivener.”

Through the course of his major league career, Dick Allen was without doubt recognized for doing a lot of things.  He was the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year and the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player.  His 351 home runs are more than Hall of Famer Ron Santo and …

Regional Labour Market Integration In England And Wales, 1850-1913, George R. Boyer, Timothy J. Hatton Dec 2015

Regional Labour Market Integration In England And Wales, 1850-1913, George R. Boyer, Timothy J. Hatton

George R. Boyer

[Excerpt] This chapter examines the integration of labour markets within the rural and urban sectors of England and Wales during the second half of the nineteenth century. Although there is a large literature on internal migration and emigration in Victorian Britain, historians typically have focused on the direction and causes of migration rather than on its consequences for the labour market. Broadly speaking, the literature has found that workers did indeed migrate towards better wage-earning opportunities, that most moves were short-distance moves, and that once certain patterns of migration were established they often persisted. The studies leave the strong impression, …

Path Integration Deficits During Linear Locomotion After Human Medial Temporal Lobectomy, John W. Philbeck, Marlene Behrmann, Lucien Levy, Samuel J. Potolicchio, Anthony J. Caputy Apr 2015

Path Integration Deficits During Linear Locomotion After Human Medial Temporal Lobectomy, John W. Philbeck, Marlene Behrmann, Lucien Levy, Samuel J. Potolicchio, Anthony J. Caputy

Marlene Behrmann

Animal navigation studies have implicated structures in and around the hippocampal formation as crucial in performing path integration (a method of determining one's position by monitoring internally generated self-motion signals). Less is known about the role of these structures for human path integration. We tested path integration in patients who had undergone left or right medial temporal lobectomy as therapy for epilepsy. This procedure removed approximately 50% of the anterior portion of the hippocampus, as well as the amygdala and lateral temporal lobe. Participants attempted to walk without vision to a previously viewed target 2-6 m distant. Patients with right, …

Solar Pv And Battery Storage Integration Using A New Configuration Of A Three-Level Npc Inverter With Advanced Control Strategy, Hamid Teymour Ghasemabadi, Danny Soetanto, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Philip Ciufo Apr 2015

Solar Pv And Battery Storage Integration Using A New Configuration Of A Three-Level Npc Inverter With Advanced Control Strategy, Hamid Teymour Ghasemabadi, Danny Soetanto, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Philip Ciufo

Dr Philip Ciufo

In this paper, a novel configuration of a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter that can integrate solar photovoltaic (PV) with battery storage in a grid-connected system is proposed. The strength of the proposed topology lies in a novel, extended unbalance three-level vector modulation technique that can generate the correct ac voltage under unbalanced dc voltage conditions. This paper presents the design philosophy of the proposed configuration and the theoretical framework of the proposed modulation technique. A new control algorithm for the proposed system is also presented in order to control the power delivery between the solar PV, battery, and grid, which …

Integration Of And The Potential For Islamic Radicalization Among Ethnic Turks In Germany, Alev Dudek Apr 2015

Integration Of And The Potential For Islamic Radicalization Among Ethnic Turks In Germany, Alev Dudek

Alev Dudek

In spite of ongoing improvements, integration of ethnic Turks in Germany remains a challenge from the dominant culture perspective, whereas a deeply ingrained institutional and everyday racism and the lack of legal protection against discrimination pose a challenge to full participation of ethnic Turks from another perspective. In an increasingly xenophobic Europe, particularly Germany, an increase in potential for religious and nationalist radicalization in different groups including ethnic Turks is becoming more and more evident. This increase in radical attitudes is not necessarily caused by a lack of integration, as evidenced among well-integrated individuals.

In view of recent developments toward …

Serdar Somuncu: Turkish German Comedy As Transnational Intervention, Kathrin M. Bower Apr 2015

Serdar Somuncu: Turkish German Comedy As Transnational Intervention, Kathrin M. Bower

Kathrin M. Bower

A reconceptualization of Germanness, combined with a reconsideration of what constitutes “Germanness” and “Turkishness” and how they are linked, is a central theme in the programs of a younger generation of Turkish German cabaret artists and comedians. As a member of the new generation of performers, Serdar Somuncu stands out, not only for his unapologetic embrace of political theater critical of both German and Turkish social politics, but also for his assertion of a right and responsibility to engage with Germany’s past, coupled with an insistence on differentiation and balanced comparison when discussing integration. After gaining notoriety through his Mein …

Multinational R&D In China: Differentiation And Integration Of Global R&D Networks, Jian Wang, Zheng Liang, Lan Xue May 2014

Multinational R&D In China: Differentiation And Integration Of Global R&D Networks, Jian Wang, Zheng Liang, Lan Xue

Jian Wang

Based on case study on multinational R&D centres in China, this paper views the central task of corporate R&D globalisation as: Differentiating R&D units to take advantage of local specific resources and integrating R&D efforts in multiple locations to achieve the whole corporations goals. Four differentiated R&D units are identified: the technology competence unit, the system competence unit, the assignment unit, and the support unit. These four units form a complete functional R&D network. Three main driving resources, that is, technology strength, human capital, and the market, are investigated, as well as their relationships to different types of R&D. Control, …

Innovation And Economic Education: An Integration, Eduardo Pol Feb 2014

Innovation And Economic Education: An Integration, Eduardo Pol

Eduardo Pol

Almost everyone agrees on the importance of educating a broad spectrum of the public about economics and business. It has been suggested by experts in economic education that universities should place greater emphasis on economics as a general education. The present paper develops a proposal to integrate innovation into elementary economic education that business faculties might use to enrich their general economic education offerings. We believe the proposal can be implemented through the design of a new subject - which may be called the 'Creative Economy' - supported by a method of teaching and learning by successive approximations. The study …

Development Of Generic Key Performance Indicators For Pmbok® Using A 3d Project Integration Model, Craig Langston Dec 2013

Development Of Generic Key Performance Indicators For Pmbok® Using A 3d Project Integration Model, Craig Langston

Craig Langston

Since Martin Barnes’ so-called ‘iron triangle’ circa 1969, much debate has occurred over how best to describe the fundamental constraints that underpin project success. This paper develops a 3D project integration model for PMBOK® comprising core constraints of scope, cost, time and risk as a basis to propose six generic key performance indicators (KPIs) that articulate successful project delivery. These KPIs are defined as value, efficiency, speed, innovation, complexity and impact and can each be measured objectively as ratios of the core constraints. An overall KPI (denoted as s3/ctr) is also derived. The aim in this paper is to set …

Development Of A Web-Based Student Enquiry System: Integration Of Ontology And Cbr, Sim K. Lau, Seung Hwan Kang

Dr Sim Kim Lau

This paper discusses the development o f a web-based student enquiry system using techniques in case-based reasoning combined with advances in ontology. The system functions as an online enquiry front-desk to allow prospective students to fin d out if they are eligible for admission to a post-graduate course in an Australian University. Ontology is applied in the system to ensure explicit specifications of concept and definition of terminology can be achieved in the web-based system. The system applies case-based reasoning technique to handle the query.

Supply Chain Integration In New Zealand: Benchmark Comparisons With The Uk Automotive Sector, Tillmann Boehme, Paul Childerhouse, Eric Deakins, Denis Towill Aug 2012

Supply Chain Integration In New Zealand: Benchmark Comparisons With The Uk Automotive Sector, Tillmann Boehme, Paul Childerhouse, Eric Deakins, Denis Towill

Tillmann Boehme

Supply chain integration is a promising approach to cross-enterprise process improvement that is still not wellunderstood. This research investigates the level of sophistication (maturity) of supply chain integration in New Zealandfrom the systems uncertainty perspective. Uncertainty levels of value streams are evaluated using the 'uncertainty circle'concept, thereby enabling benchmark comparisons of value stream performance. A sample of 21 NZ process industryvalue streams is assessed using a so-called Quick Scan Audit Methodology (QSAM). and the uncertainty resultscompared with those obtained from 21 value streams in the UK automotive sector. This benchmarking revealed thatvalue streams in New Zealand are weakly integrated and …

The Integration Of Balanced Scorecard Models, Carol J. Mcnair-Connolly, Ted Watts Apr 2012

The Integration Of Balanced Scorecard Models, Carol J. Mcnair-Connolly, Ted Watts

Ted Watts

The entire focus of any balanced scorecard model (BSM) is to ensure that a wide range of events and outcomes are captured in ways useful to decision makers. An important question arises - which decision maker? And, equally important, must this decision maker be intimately familiar with a supposed organizational strategy in order to succeed? The answer to the first question helps us sort the BSMs into subgroups; the answer to the second question suggests that strategy may be as simple as the will of an organization and its members to survive to fight one more day. Building on the …

Migration And Labour Market Integration In Late Nineteenth-Century England And Wales, George R. Boyer Feb 2012

Migration And Labour Market Integration In Late Nineteenth-Century England And Wales, George R. Boyer

George R. Boyer

[Excerpt] There is a long and well established tradition of studies analysing the pattern and causes of internal migration and assessing the degree of labour market integration in late nineteenth-century Britain. Some studies document the flows of migrants from one area to another and describe migrant characteristics and the directions of the predominant streams of migration. Others analyse the determinants of gross or net migration flows at the region or county level. The questions implicit in these studies are: How mobile was the labour force? What were the major factors which determined individual decisions to migrate? How are these factors …

Does North America Have The Right Stuff? An Analysis Of Compatibility And The Potential Deepening Of North American Integration, Gaspare M. Genna Jan 2011

Does North America Have The Right Stuff? An Analysis Of Compatibility And The Potential Deepening Of North American Integration, Gaspare M. Genna

Gaspare M Genna

This article assesses the current and future levels of North American integration. Econometric models that compare integration around the world indicate that integration deepens when countries have similar domestic, political, and economic institutions, and are economically asymmetrical. It is theorized that similar domestic institutions reduce transaction costs and uncertainty of success for firms while economic asymmetry provides incentives for and coordination among member states. In addition, institutional homogeneity also affects the level of integration. Currently, the North American partners lack high levels of these conditions, which explains the low level of integration. The analysis concludes with policy recommendations to improve …

Federalism And National Integration In Nigeria (1999-2007), Fab O. Onah Phd, Ozy B. Orluwene Jp Aug 2009

Federalism And National Integration In Nigeria (1999-2007), Fab O. Onah Phd, Ozy B. Orluwene Jp

Dr Ozy B.Orluwene,JP

ABSTRACT This study examined the concept of federalism and the issue of national integration in Nigeria from 1999-2007. It is observed that governance in Nigeria is replete with very many contradictions, controversies, paradoxes and crises emanating from the country’s fragile experiment in a multi-ethnic federalism. These have generated conflicting interests, which have over the years lingered unresolved since Lord Lugard forced the amalgamation of disparate and isolated ethno-linguistic nationalities into a country in 1914. Considerable information on federalism, national integration and related concepts were synthesized. The literature review identified gaps, which the study addressed. Source of data for the study …

The Pitfalls In The Nigerian Federalism, Ozy B. Orluwene Jp Dec 2006

The Pitfalls In The Nigerian Federalism, Ozy B. Orluwene Jp

Dr Ozy B.Orluwene,JP

ABSTRACT The paper is primarily examining the pitfalls in Nigeria’s federalism. Theoretically, federalism as a system of government and power arrangement is crafted deliberately to deal with a sociological complex polity as presented in Nigeria’s multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic and multi-religious composition. But there exist wide gaps between theory and practice, vision and reality, with the data of governance being replete with many contradictions, controversies, paradoxes and crises emanating from the persistent stagnation and diminution that follow fragile practice of federalism. Rather than improving the quality of governance and practice, it tends to diminutates and validates the fact and conclusion that the …
