Since the acquisition of Digital Commons and the launch of the FHSU Scholars Repository in January 2016, there has been an institutional effort to determine which platform is best suited to displaying existing content. Beginning in 2009, the FHSU Reveille Yearbooks collection had been hosted in CONTENTdm. This collection suffered from issues relating to access and user experience. Acquired by JMU Special Collections in 2014, the Robert J. Sullivan Papers include photographs and over eleven hundred slides documenting the city of Harrisonburg, Virginia during a critical period of growth during urban renewal initiatives from the mid-to-late 20th century. While digitization of the images from this collection allowed us to share it with researchers and the local community, the process of facilitating access revealed several unexpected challenges. Quick adaptability and establishing valuable partnerships were among the many factors that allowed for the successful completion of this project.

This 2016 guest lecture for the UCLA Information Studies Graduate Course "Collection Development" offered an overview of collection development in academic libraries and illustrated the most essential aspects of building library collections in the 21th century. Focusing on the William H. Hannon Library at LMU as an example, the lecture elaborated on the variety of subject collection, library liaison program, selection criteria, collecting for Archives and Special Collections, and building digital collections.

The Gothic Archive is the flagship digital humanities project for the Marquette University library. The project was birthed from a simple digital collection, and through the partnership of faculty and librarians, was transformed into something more. Libraries are well-positioned for partnership with digital humanities efforts in several ways. The management of digital items and the description of information resources for future researchers make libraries natural partners in digital humanities projects. Often Humanities scholars will reach out to the library for support or even guidance in these projects. At Marquette University, the Gothic Archive exemplifies the development of this collaboration. This joint presentation showcases three Loyola Marymount University Digital Collections commemorating the centennial of the Los Angeles Aqueduct: J. D. Black Papers, Big Pine Citizen Newspaper Collection, and Werner von Boltenstern Postcard Collection. Shilpa Rele discusses the initiation of this digital project with grant funding from the Metabolic Studio, collaborative project management, and digitization of historical materials housed in the William H. Hannon Library’s Archives and Special Collections. Rachel Wen-Paloutzian elaborates on the three diverse digital collections, creation of descriptive metadata for these collections, and metadata best practices guideline for the CONTENTdm content management system.

In Summer 2013, with consultation of Shilpa Rele, Rachel Wen-Paloutzian wrote the best practices guidelines for descriptive metadata creation and management of LMU Digital Collections. From then to Summer 2015, Wen-Paloutzian successfully implemented the best practices in creating and enhancing over 3,400 original descriptive metadata records for 12 digital collections at LMU.

An exploration of collaboration between institutions for the creation of digital collections using CONTENTdm. Wisconsin Heritage Online and the Milwaukee Public Library reveal how they were able to enter into a partnership to host digital collections from smaller institutions who would not be able to afford to purchase or subscribe CONTENTdm on their own.

Digital finding aids increase use and visibility of special collections materials, but many programs or services require knowledge of coding languages to create and maintain them. Using CONTENTdm and a word processing program, finding aids using EAD principles and formatting can be easily created without the needing knowledge of coding or programming languages.
