Self Hood And Self Realization In Contemporary Korean Dramas, Kevin Chang, Yanjie Wang
Self Hood And Self Realization In Contemporary Korean Dramas, Kevin Chang, Yanjie Wang
Honors Thesis
Korean dramas are an important worldwide cultural phenomenon; however, there has been a lack of direct critical analysis on contemporary Korean dramas. Significantly, popular media is a potent tool to understand a country’s societal values. Given Korea’s intellectual contact with the West, it is possible to interpret K-dramas through the lens of self-realization. It’s Okay to Not be Okay teaches us that trauma must be faced to overcome it though the stories of Moon Gang-tae, Sang-tae, and Ko Moon-young. In Extracurricular, Jisoo and Gyuri represent how the current youth environment of South Korea stifles self-expression and self-realization. Itaewon Class, …
Religious Beliefs As They Relate To Beliefs About Free Will, Including Determinism, Libertarianism, And Compatibilism, Leigh Lewis
Religious Beliefs As They Relate To Beliefs About Free Will, Including Determinism, Libertarianism, And Compatibilism, Leigh Lewis
Honors Thesis
Research on religion as it relates to free will suggests that one’s religiosity and religious commitment may have an impact on their beliefs about free will and determinism. Previous research indicates a positive correlation between religiosity and belief in free will. When it comes to determinism, reported results are more complicated but lightly suggest that there is a negative correlation between religiosity and determinism--although different definitions of determinism impact the correlation (Carey & Paulhus, 2013). The present study, involving 170 college students, investigated how religiosity and levels of religious commitment may impact beliefs about free will and determinism. In addition, …
Does Public Health Policy Matter?: Explaining Variation In Covid-19 Outcomes Across The 50 States, Charlotte Cheng, Richard L. Fox
Does Public Health Policy Matter?: Explaining Variation In Covid-19 Outcomes Across The 50 States, Charlotte Cheng, Richard L. Fox
Honors Thesis
The Covid-19 pandemic has prompted debate about what factors cause wide variations in mortality and infection rates across the United States and raised questions about what can be done to limit the spread of future outbreaks. In the comparative international politics literature, there are four explanations that determine how well a country can contain outbreaks: leadership, state capacity, demographics, and state culture. Currently, there are no studies that show a comprehensive evaluation of what has caused variations in mortality rate among the fifty states. This study aims to examine state variation among the 50 states in the U.S. and its …
History In Crisis: Museum Programming During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Lindsay Mcconnell
History In Crisis: Museum Programming During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Lindsay Mcconnell
Honors Thesis
The subject of my research is how museums adapted their public programming in response to COVID-19. The goal of my research is to analyze how successfully museums shifted their community engagement programming to online platforms. Since I hope to work in the museum field of programming, I was motivated to conduct this research. Not much research can be found on this topic because COVID-19’s effects on museums are still unfolding. My research could provide a foundation of ideas to build on. To begin, I read articles about the relationship between museums and technology. I applied this knowledge to analyze how …
Giving In Dictator Games: Factors Of Generosity, Margaret Gallagher, Prachi Jain
Giving In Dictator Games: Factors Of Generosity, Margaret Gallagher, Prachi Jain
Honors Thesis
Because perceptions of luck, hard work, and the idea of a “me vs. you” mindset often influence people’s ideas of fairness, it is important to understand these perceptions and how they can affect giving and support for redistributive policies. To better understand the factors that influence people to give or not give to others, I created two modified dictator games to answer the research questions, “How does the generation of initial allocation in a dictator game affect perceptions of deservingness?” and “How does competitive and cooperative priming affect dictator allocation choices between efficiency and inefficiency?” By varying the way the …
The Impact Of Culture On Member State Migration Policy In The European Union, Sophia Notter, Jennifer Ramos
The Impact Of Culture On Member State Migration Policy In The European Union, Sophia Notter, Jennifer Ramos
Honors Thesis
The European Union (EU) was formed with the belief that further integration among European states would bring sustainable peace. This began with economic integration but continued to include political and social integration as well. This ad hoc method of creating cohesion among sovereign Member States was generally accepted among Member State governments and citizens. However, in 2014, when a flood of refugees began arriving in Europe, fleeing from violence and instability in the Middle East and North Africa, the EU as an institution, and what exactly it means to be European, was challenged. Instead of pulling together and promoting the …
Black Lives Matter. The Nba Strike And Its Effect, Chiara Armstrong, Julian Saint Clair
Black Lives Matter. The Nba Strike And Its Effect, Chiara Armstrong, Julian Saint Clair
Honors Thesis
The summer of 2020 marked an important turning point for the contemporary civil rights movement Black Lives Matter (BLM). The rest of the world started to take notice and protests happened around the globe following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. Although there is a long history of sports activism, the National Basketball Association had previously been reluctant to take a stance on BLM as an organization. Following the murder of yet another unarmed Black man, Jacob Blake, every single NBA player refused to play in their playoff games from August 26th through the 28th. Previous research has …
