Painting Intimacy: Art-Based Research Of Intimacy, Michal Lev

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This art-based research explores whether — and, if so, how — the process of painting, together with witnessing and reflection on the process and imagery, further an understanding of intimacy. The research also examines the conditions that favor intimacy, the obstacles to intimacy, and the particular features of artistic media, processes and reflection, through the editing of video footage, that can further the intimate experience. The participants in the study were five adults (including the researcher) between the ages of thirty and eighty who were familiar with the creation of visual art. Among them were three women and two men …

Experiences Of Personal Therapy As A Client: Perspectives Of Asian Music Therapists During Their Training In The Us, Hyejin So

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This phenomenological research explored previous personal therapy (PT) experiences of East Asian music therapists during their training in the US. The study focused on examining the meaning of being therapy clients while they were music therapy students, and discovering the influence of PT on their personal, clinical, and musical development during and after the training. In addition, two different cultural influences on the therapeutic process were examined. Eight music therapists from Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan participated in this study. The length of their PT experiences ranged from six to 24 months. The participants’ therapists were Asians who immigrated to …

The Use Of Therapeutic Group Drumming With Korean Middle School Students In School Violence Prevention Programs, Eun Sil Suh

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a therapeutic group drumming intervention on school violence prevention in middle school students. The research questions were (a) Which of the following three interventions was most effective in reducing aggression of middle school students in Korea: a lecture-based general prevention program, a therapeutic drumming group that …

Separation From And Reconstruction Of Home: A Study Of Immigrant Expressive Therapists, Dana Albert-Proos Jul 2015

Separation From And Reconstruction Of Home: A Study Of Immigrant Expressive Therapists, Dana Albert-Proos

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This study examined the subject of home—specifically separating from and reconstructing home—to better understand the concept of home and its role in the immigration experience and the effectiveness of expressive arts therapy as a treatment method for immigrants. The literature supported that leaving one’s home and recreating another are major parts of the immigration experience. Previous studies found that these experiences can raise fundamental questions about where and what home is (e.g., Despres, 1991; Mallet, 2004; Malone & Dooley, 2006; Philip & Ho, 2010; Wiles, 2008). This study used qualitative methods to explore the research question: How do immigrant expressive …

Using Art Therapy To Understand The Experience Of African-American Girls With Childhood Obesity, Elva Anderson May 2015

Using Art Therapy To Understand The Experience Of African-American Girls With Childhood Obesity, Elva Anderson

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

The growing epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States disproportionately affects African-American children. Traditional use of behavior modification and nutrition counseling in weight reduction programs for obese children have not been successful in overcoming the social, cultural, and psychological barriers to effective weight control. Although art therapy can provide important insights into the life challenges faced by obese children, there has been little research on the use of art therapy to increase understanding of the lived experiences of African-American girls living with obesity. By understanding their perspective, it will assist in developing theory as a means to create better …

Asian Dance/Movement Therapy Educators’ Experiences Of Teaching Dance/Movement Therapy In East Asia After Training In The Us, Ko Kyung Soon Apr 2015

Asian Dance/Movement Therapy Educators’ Experiences Of Teaching Dance/Movement Therapy In East Asia After Training In The Us, Ko Kyung Soon

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived learning and teaching experiences of native East Asian DMT educators who completed their DMT education in the US and then returned to their home countries. The researcher intended to learn how participants experienced their Western DMT education and how they adapted what they had learned to teaching DMT to students in East Asia. Six participants were successfully recruited from four East Asian countries (Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan). Three types of data were gathered via a researcher-designed demographic questionnaire, the Asian American Values Scale-Multidimensional, and individual interviews. The Nvivo10 software program …

Neural Activation On Guided Imagery And Music: A Functional Mri Study, Sang Eun Lee Nov 2013

Neural Activation On Guided Imagery And Music: A Functional Mri Study, Sang Eun Lee

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

Music and imagery have been used for working emotions such as awareness, arousal, enhancement, reflection and transformation of emotions in therapeutic relationship; these are crucial processes in music psychotherapy. To illuminate the empirical adequacy of concepts of theory in guided imagery and music (GIM) as one of music psychotherapeutic methods, the present study investigated the neural bases of arousal and emotional processing in response to recall and re-experience of personal negative emotional episodes via GIM and the efficacy of GIM for arousal and emotional processing via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. For this study, classical music and verbal stimuli …

Temple Of Ancient Knowing: Music Therapy Portraits Of Globalized Indian Identity, Sangeeta Swamy Jul 2011

Temple Of Ancient Knowing: Music Therapy Portraits Of Globalized Indian Identity, Sangeeta Swamy

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This dissertation study assessed ethnic identity in adults of Indian origin through Culturally Centered Music & Imagery (CCMI), an arts-based, psychotherapeutic technique. The purpose was to examine how Indian music, in the context of CCMI, could evoke identity-based imagery and assess Indian identity in a globalized context. Five Indian men and women participated in CCMI sessions, and the qualitative methodology of portraiture was used in this study. The results provide support for the cultural or ethnic unconscious and suggest the potential for CCMI to access this internal, collective space. Results also indicate that CCMI may be used in a clinical …

Sharevision: A Collaborative-Reflective, Expressive Arts Intervention To Address Secondary Trauma, Ellen M. Landis May 2010

Sharevision: A Collaborative-Reflective, Expressive Arts Intervention To Address Secondary Trauma, Ellen M. Landis

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This study examines the impact of a collaborative-reflective, expressive arts intervention on secondary trauma among mental health clinicians. Clinicians met at their workplace over a three-month period, on alternating weeks, in six expressive arts-integrated workshops. They learned a particular collaborative-reflective format called Sharevision. Clinicians also met independently using Sharevision, on non-workshop weeks. Participants completed a four-part survey on compassion fatigue (Figley, 1995 & Stamm, 1995-1998; Gentry, 1996; Baranowsky, 1996; Gentry & Baranowsky, 1998) at the onset and conclusion of the study period. Findings from the survey, transcripts of workshops, and exit interviews indicate the collaborative-reflective Sharevision model correlates to a …

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of art therapy on healthy aging in older adults in terms of its promotion of well-being and a better quality of life. Few research studies have been conducted on the Korean American older adult population to investigate the effectiveness of art therapy. The present study was undertaken to quantitatively assess the effect of art therapy on this population using three standardized psychological instruments to measure the dependent variables of affect, anxiety, and selfesteem. An effort was made to understand the physiology of the brain as it relates to art therapy …

A multiple-case study of the use of cinematherapy in six sessions of individual therapy each with three preadolescent aged children who were experiencing parental divorce was conducted. Children were shown film clips from six different films over six weeks of individual therapy. Questions were used to facilitate discussion with the children and children were given the opportunity to respond to the film clips expressively, by using their choice of art, creative writing, story-telling, and/or drama. Each child was interviewed one to two weeks after the intervention. Multiple themes emerged across the cases, including the use of films for: assessment of …
